You're going to order the broccoli reuben (not available on weekends). You're going to leave a changed person. The Dot is cozy! When my parents visited me up here, they requested multiple Dot trips. It's really that good. For some historical context for the curious, The Dot moved into the building formerly occupied by Daytime Diner. Daytime was one of my favorite places in Ames, but their pipes burst during the intense blizzard we had back in January of 2024. You can still see one of their stickers in the doorframe of the leopard bathroom. They reopened much later with weird hours and a flipped ordering system, and they were unable to stay afloat. I was devastated. But, The Dot has moved in to surpass what Daytime was able to achieve. Ames continues to have innovative and exciting food options!

However one complaint was that dine in was a bit awkward when I went, you order your food at the register, and if you see a spot open you just have to grab it. One more thing is you have to wait for a staff to clear it off before you can sit down. And theres a crowd of people awkwardly standing around by the register during their peak hours since it's not that big of a building. Feels like they should just encourage people to put away their dishes at a certain spot if customers can sit anywhere. Overall a really nice brunch spot and I will be back to try their other items. We love the variety in rap music, drinks ranging from local to European, no tv's, and a great setting for deep talks. The environment is a dimly lit tavern with a sophisticated ambiance making for a more tame crowd focused on conversations opposed to dancing. Every once and a while a band will play live music. Free popcorn in the back with foosball and pinball too! All in all, I'd describe this as a "bar for professors" great for just chilling out with some close friends.

The server was efficient and quickly served me a mug of water. I started with the flamingo, which is a frozen daiquiri. I loved the glass straw and my drink stayed frozen to the last sip. Sirloin: alternatively, this was very juicy and delicious. Great grill flavor and lovely side of mushrooms. Broasted Chicken: in true "me" fashion, I ordered two entrees. While my salad bar trip was great and my prime rib was so-so, this more than made up for it! Soooooo juicy and flavorful, highly recommend their broasted chicken. Chopped Steak: my husband loves a chopped steak. Don't ask me why, it's not at the top of my list but to each their own. He didn't love the demi glaze on this dish, and thought their beef gravy would be been much better. The demi was "too much wine" flavor. Salad bar a D (assemble your own house salad more like it--iceberg, black olives, cheddar shreds, bacon bits, croutons)--prime rib an A for flavor but not heated through (on prime rib special night), NY strip looked the exact same as prime rib? walleye fillets had a lot of tiny bones, crappy was fried beyond recognition as a fish fillet, smothered chicken was unremarkable but fries are the super crisp kind with a crackle on the outside and they brought extra tartar sauce--a standout side.
