It has been 10+ years since I have skated, and I wanted to get back into it, and so I decided to check out So Hip It Hurts. I was looking for a longboard, and knew nothing about them. Alex helped me right away, was extremely knowledgable, and showed me all the different options available, along with their respective costs. An hour later I walked out with a new longboard - which was custom to my size and tastes. I just got into skateboarding and I bought my first complete board from them. They put it together for me and everything was great, but after on day the grip tape was already peeling in a few places. I sent them a message and they offered to redo the grip tape free of charge. I brought it in and they got it done in about ten minutes and gave me some free stickers and an old used deck they had lying around! So Hip it Hurts belongs to a group of stores that I have no business reviewing, having aged out of the intended demographic...yet I love to merchandise, the vibe, the service, and the fact that they offer free booze with purchases. I wonder about the store's future-along with others in a swiftly-gentrifying neighbourhood. A plague of condos has sprung up, and the seedy head shops and sex shops and used record stores are being replaced by international chains. Pop down to Queen and Bathurst, and a block is taken up by a concrete fortress housing a Winners and Loblaws. It's been a long time coming, but the graffiti was on the wall. Speaker's Corner closed up shop; Moses Znaimer became an advocate for oppressed baby boomers in their quest to die by their own hands (seriously. look it up.); soon PBR will be replaced by David's Tea. I'm probably not helping. I haven't purchased anything there since I went to work for one of their loosely-styled competitors (that's back when I was in undergrad. almost 20 years ago. Jiminy Cricket we're all old); but I always felt a bit jealous-it's a labyrinth of a store, populated by people who are so much cooler than I'll ever be (same today as they were back then), but who are polite and well-informed and eager to help. There's a tremendous selection of shoes and clothes and skate decks and Nixon watches; prices are on the high side of average, but ambiance and service make it worthwhile. I'm old enough that I can buy my own alcohol without fear of getting carded, but there's still something to be said for feeling a little transgressive. read more

This store is awesome. I could stop the review right there but it wouldn't do it justice, so I think I'll wax poetic a bit more about this place. Let's start with the shoes. Good God there's a lot of shoes in this joint. Good shoes too, not some random selection of shoes that you wouldn't want regardless of price. And speaking of prices, they're also pretty damn good. The shoe wall is what greets you upon walking into the store and extends to a cozy shoe room which faces Queen St. This also happens to be were they keep their watch cabinet which brings me to... ...their awesome selection of Nixon watches. For those of you who haven't heard of this tour de force in the urban style industry, they're awesome, high quality and here to stay. Started as a skateboard accessory company years back, they have morphed into something that is sought after by more than just the skate community. They can be worn to work, a gala event or well, when you're out skating! The selection is better than at Watch It! or boathouse, which are 2nd and 3rd, with the tie going to The Accessory Bar. But So Hip It Hurts wins. Now.... ...let's move on to the clothing. Holy selection Batman. From RCVA to Chocolate to Fourstar and Volcom, this place has it all. They also carry specialty Levis and Burton...plus a bunch of other cool skate or snowboard related brands. Which brings me to... ...their skate section. Like old school and think the kids these days don't appreciate the way things used to be? They sell vintage Powell and Vision decks, along with some Santa Cruz too. Those go for about $150 a deck, totally reasonable considering where else can you get them anymore? As far as new product goes, they've got you covered there too. Complete pro set ups are $180, tax in. If you want a middle ground option, it's $150. And if you're on a tight budget, they have blank options with lower tier parts for $120. And they have all the brands you want. Three walls of decks, discount boards that have been in the pound a bit too long, and about three shelves of trucks including a healthy selection of Independant trucks which are what you want anyhow. But it's winter, you say? Well.... ...they have lots of snowboard stuff too. I don't board, but you'll find what you want here and prices are totally cool as well. Lastly but not leastly, the staff here rock. They're actually friendly without so much as a faint trace of douchiness to them. The manager especially was a real peach everytime I've been there even though all I was buying most of the time was stickers. That's it. I'm done. Talk about a hole in the wall, this is one of the coolest places to shop on queen street. They cater more to the skater, boarder, rocker crowd (and they have a TON OF CLOTHES) but holy crap they did a cool job setting this place up. To get to the store you have to climb a set of stairs and are greeted and immediately see a bar (yes a bar - although I'm not sure if they actually serve anything or not) and right in front of you is their 'shoe' room filled with couches where you'll find people just chilling and talking and then you go through a hidden passage and walk through a maze of clothes after clothes until you get to the boards, boots, bindings, etc. On a side note, I'm amazing at explaining the layout of stores aren't I? But if you're walking through Queen street, you DEFINITELY have to check this place out, even if you don't buy anything from their self-proclaimed "Dirt Fuckin' Cheap Section" read more

This store is great for dudes and bros who are SO STOKED about BOARDING and THRASHING and GRINDING. A-hem. Sorry. Just a bit of acid reflux after those words came out of my fingers. Those kind of guys love this place. They have all sorts of overpriced skate gear, and all the fashions to make sure you look cool when you're at the skatepark, or on the slopes, or whatever. They also have all sorts of t-shirts, as Ken K. illustrated, with swear words on them to, you know, be rebellious and make a statement about the power of words! Or just to get you sent to the principal's office, since the majority of their clientele are still in high school. Beyond the teenage years, when you no longer have access to parental funds and you can't write a Christmas list anymore, it's not cheap. They sell the typical "skate" brands, with a selection that is far more diverse than West 49 or Boathouse, so they do have that going for them. But everything is ridiculously overpriced. So if you're looking for a skateboard uniform or a $150 hoodie to impress all the kids in your English class, this is your place! read more

Reeally, really, really cool place. I bought my first boyfriend's first gift on our first Christmas, on our first night downtown. My first last-minute gift too. It's such an awesome place! They have SOME snowboard jackets and pants, a few snowboards and accessories (wax, boots, etc.)... but their main stuff are skateboards and cool clothing. I found this really awesome Burton t-shirt for my guy for $30. As of today (3 years later), this shirt is still the coolest t-shirt in his collection. In my honest opinion. Also because I chose it, therefore it gets more cool points. We've visited a few times since. We don't buy a lot of things, but it's a place we check out every time we're in the area. The women's section here is only a small little room.... I did buy myself a Neff neck warmer that I'll be wearing on my next ski trip (hopefully it'd cold and snowing). Great staff here! I've been boarding for a couple years before moving to the GTA and needed to pick up a new board (shipping a 36" drop-through isn't cheap). I checked out a bunch of articles and reviews and ended up at this place. Boards: To be up front, I'm not interested in tricking out my board, whether by making my own or swapping out half of the parts on a complete. If it works well as a complete, I'll get it; if it's not so hot, probably not. If you want to purchase your board in-person rather than online, they have probably one of the best selections that I've seen. Everything from Pennys (and a lot of them) on up to 40" longboards. Their brands are definitely skewed towards Globe (an Aussie brand), Landyachtz, and a handful of other brands sprinkled in there (e.g., Arbor). So if you are seriously brand faithful, you may have to look elsewhere. I ended up with a Globe Blazer 26" Cruiser (in Lime) after a lot of thinking and rolling around in the shop. I won't comment on the board that much because (a) it's new, and I only rode it for about an hour yesterday and (b) it's a complete build, so it's not really reflective of them as to whether it's a good board or not (does seem like a good board so far though). As noted above, you do get a free beer when you spend over a certain amount, although it was $80 this time (I got 2 beers since my board was $175). Also note that there is no tax factored in at the register, so I guess it's in the sticker price. Prices: The prices are competitive and typical of what you would find at other shops. To be frank, as an American, I got sticker shock looking at any Canadian store's prices because there's a way better availability of decent-quality, sub-$150 boards down south, so seeing cruisers starting at $150 (typically $80+ in the US) and longboards at $180+ (typically $110+). The prices of what you do find here aren't that significantly different than in the states (accounting for exchange rate), but the selection is definitely skewed toward the upper price range. It's not a knock against the store, but more for anyone who may be coming up from the US like myself. However, the notion that anyone would pay more than $60 for a generic, colored 22" Penny Board without designs is wild. I can't believe how much theirs are, and I'm guessing that it's probably the same throughout Canada, but most people that I know with Pennys have them because they're dirt cheap compared to a $150 cruiser or a $200 longboard. You can find them on Kijiji for the price that I'm expecting with only gentle use. Location: Pretty easy to find. You go upstairs and it just keeps going farther and farther back (that's where the boards are btw). It's too bad that it's on a busy street, otherwise you could try some rides outside, but you can kind of roll around for a few meters inside the shop to get a feel for the flex and what not. read more

Used to be a big fan of this shop but they're return policies are pretty unfair and the owner is unpleasant

I was in Toronto this past weekend shopping for Christmas when I stumbled upon this jem of a store. They carry the sickest snowboarding gear, including Burtons Private Stock which is completely rare! Other stuff that they carry that is totally sick is the Nixon elite class watches! These are things that I would never be able to find in Ottawa. The have the largest selection of Supra shoes I have ever seen, which is irrelevant to me because I hate them, but it made shopping for my little brother a hell of a lot easier. The best part of the whole thing: they have a store 'policy' that every purchase over a certain amount (I think it was somewhere around the hundred dollar mark) you get a free drink, and yes, I'm talking about booze! They have a Jagger dispenser right by the front cash and they have cold beer too! I'll tell you right now, I got half my christmas shopping done in one go! I can't believe the selection that this skate shop has. The staff was super chill, all really nice people. I even met the couple who owns the whole place, and let me tell you, they were fuckin' rad. It's also in a really convenient location, right in the shopping area on Queen street. It's on the second floor of a building, so you might walk right past it, but I really recommend you don't. read more

I can't say enough things about this store that suck. The staff don't seem to know much about their on-hand stock. Despite constantly claiming to get things in if they don't have them in stock, they don't. I've twice tried to order items in the current season without any effect. They don't order your items, call you back, or care at all when you come in to follow up. The store-owners don't care enough about their customers to try and solve even the slightest of problems, and even the most basic of size exchanges, or credit notes are a hassle. Their "so hip" decks are made of incredibly low quality (chip and delaminate at the slightest use), and they seem to value poor customer service as a business ethic. Despite changing seasons, they don't seem to order new stock in regular intervals, and clothing doesn't seem to significantly go on sale between one year and the next. I've seen the same couple of jackets just after christmas season for two years running. They don't seem to have any interest in accommodating anyone who doesn't work there or doesn't directly affect them on a day-to-day basis. Sure, they have a bar near the door, but that seems just to serve as a way to distract people on the way in or out from their spotty inventory, and incredibly poor customer service. Stay away at all costs, and ignore anyone who says they can help you out. Sure they might have a couple of things from the brands you're looking for, but honestly, it's just as cheap or expensive anywhere else, you're more likely to find your sizes elsewhere, and people are more likely to get off their asses and help you at another store. With the possible exception of the skinny guy who works there on weekends who at least seems to be nice enough to sort of try. Above all costs, avoid this store or ignore them in favour of others. Even West49 would be a better bet for ANYTHING, despite the fact that they don't always carry the same brands. This store is horrible on ALL fronts. read more
