The resort looks like it could be fun when everything is open but we saw it at a bad time. So why 2 stars, we went to Granite Peak the next day and had a great time, most hills were open and it was a lot of fun.

The atmosphere is fantastic -- it truly feels like you're up north in the Northwoods. It has that cozy, laid-back ski vibe that makes you want to hang out after your runs. The food is reasonably priced and always hits the spot. Drinks at the bar are a little on the expensive side, but that's pretty typical for ski hills. I've never had an issue with any staff members -- everyone has always been friendly and helpful. Service upstairs in The Hideout can be a bit slow at times, especially during busy hours, but it's nothing that ruins the experience. Overall, it's a great place to ski, relax, and spend the day. Highly recommend -- especially if you're looking for that true Northwoods feel.

There is terrain for everyone from super long greens that still have some roll to blues with big head walls and steep groomed and ungroomed blacks and glade runs that let you explore- you can have it all here. In a year I wasn't going to head out west, Powderhorn filled my need for great skiing! The lodge is new and comfortable (next year we will be able to use it more) and there are lots of places to stay including ski in and ski out on mountain (we did AirBNB 10 minutes away). If you want more adventure, Black Jack and Indianhead are a short drive away. There is not a big terrain park here but we still found lots of jumps and rock outcroppings to keep us busy!

Looking at the booking site pictures, I wasn't thrilled with the place but I figured I could handle it for 2 days. Once we got there, however, it was awful and it was a miserable stay. As soon as you walk in the door you are knocked over my the overwhelming smell of mildew that permeates the building. It is dark but not dark enough to hade the wrinkled up carpet that you don't want to walk on barefoot. The bathroom we used was dark and the toilets barely flush, very challenging when you are sharing bathrooms with others and people need to flush more than pee. All the rooms had missing or burnt out lightbulbs that added to the darkness of the place. The window air conditioning unit in the living room kitchen are was loud and leaked water on the floor so we were constantly wiping up puddles of water. The air conditioning unit in the attic bedroom we had, kept the room cool but it was loud and woke you up about every 30 minutes when it was going through some cycle that sounded like water running down the wall. There are no closets in the bedrooms either. The deck had 3 gas grills and they were all so disgustingly dirty you wouldn't want to cook on them. The binder with instructions said the house had been "cleaned and sterilized" I'm pretty sure that is false.

Snowmobile and ATV trail runs in front of the lodge. The Piper Haus lodge is open all year and is in close proximity to a wide variety of attractions on Michigan's Upper Peninsula from golf courses, hiking and biking trails, waterfalls to Copper Peak. The large group lodge is also very near Blackjack Ski Resort, Whitecap Mountain, and Indianhead Mountain as well as Lake Superior and the Porcupine Mountains. The lodge has 2 units, each with 7 bedrooms and will accommodate up to 20 guests each. The units may be combined to host a total of up to 40 guests. Each unit offers 4 bathrooms, its own kitchen, hot tub, sauna and two wood burning fireplaces.

The sign was hard to see but we called the number and made a reservation. The place was newly renovated, clean and had a comfortable bed. That's all we needed for the night. The price was very reasonable. It was a good experience. It looks like the place is geared toward groups as they have a large deck with a grill and a gathering room for guests with video games.

Wish a lot of these places would just take OUT the CARPETS... especially when they are pet friendly... rugs are so much easier to clean and replace when they are smaller. Hardwood floors would be great but other than that... Enjoyed a good bed, quiet and dark accommodations. Nearby are hikes to waterfalls, and places to enjoy the beauty of nature! Not much in the area for dinner so bring food with you== like a picnic dinner-- ! Brittany was super friendly and they make checkout super easy too! They really made you feel welcome! Hope to return

Black river lodge is so welcoming, we stayed for the 4th of July weekend…read more Accommodations are idea, rooms are spacious;I love the idea of 2 restrooms and separate space. we traveled with our dog Daisy, I searched and it brought us to the lodge. The husband & wife team are very friendly, helpful with dinner recommendations, sights in the area, other friendly dogs & guests made the visit very enjoyable . Plenty of common space to socialize. Thank you for a great stay & we will be back!
