I love the idea of food banks and the help from the community and often have older food, but I was SO SO bummed that OVER HALF of my food was EXPIRED by at least 15 days... Is this normal? I don't go often, only when I am in serious need but it seems like that shouldn't be acceptable to give to a Mother and her Children.. I'm super bummed. Now no bread, produce, meats, yogurts, etc.. On top of that, the Lady who did my first timer paperwork with me was definitely judging, if she wasn't trying to be it definitely felt that way to the point of me feeling like I should be embarrassed for being there. This organization is literally "saving lives", one at a time. In any given month they serve over 10,000 people. TEN THOUSAND PEOPLE, that's a lot of folks who need our help. That's a lot of fresh and prepared foods; clothing; medical supplies and equipment. Delivered meals to home bound and the elderly and toys for kids. In 2015 they distributed 2,745,927 lbs. of food which had been donated. This is "just the food" aspect of what they do. I was first introduced to this organization in 2009 when we had to move our folks to a Sr. Living Community and needed to downsize from a 3 Bedroom House to a 1 Bedroom Apartment. There was no way we could take all their belongings and canned foods to the new place. So we started boxing up bags and boxes of things we knew someone else could use. This was just the first of "many donations" we made to this organization. When I heard more about this organization, I knew this would not be the last time I would be making a donation. When my Mother passed away in January of 2014, we donated all her unused medical supplies from medical scissors and gauze to her walker and port a potty. In addition to this all her clothing and other personal household items. If you had to buy these outright you would be amazed at the cost. Cost of which, many folks on a fixed income cannot afford. The staff works "tirelessly" to maintain this facility, keep it stocked and well organized and greets everyone with a warm and gracious smile. As they say "But there for the Grace of God go I". No doubt they are constantly reaching out to back fill the needs folks like me cannot provide. So if you cannot contribute monetarily, you can make a cash donation. My Brother and I were once again extremely honored to make our final donation in May of 2016 when our Father passed away. At which time, a good portion of the household food items and men's clothing and medical supplies were donated. My Dad would have been so proud as in his last years, he had the opportunity to meet the folks at SnowCap and see first hand how they helped the community in need. Heck if he could have, he probably would have given them the coat off his back on the day we visited, we were both so touched. I can't say enough "Good" about this organization. So think twice before you "throw it away" and consider donating instead. There is always someone who needs what you have. read more

I am appreciative of the help Snow Cap has given us, however, I felt obligated to mention my recent experience there. The young lady at the service window did not seem happy and did not inquire about how many people are in our home like other volunteers (or employees) have. I did not think about it at first, and as I stood there I realized I better mention it just in case. I approached and asked the young lady if she had me in the system for two people and she asked for a name and then told me it makes no difference. When my number was called and I retrieved the food, I found as I was moving it from the cart into the vehicle I was in, that there were three large bags of potatoes that were beyond freshness and literally covered in sprout growths indicating expiring condition. These sprouts contain a high level of Solanine which is toxic. I also did notice that two other people returned the same potatoes with their carts as I stood there awaiting my turn. There were also expired items and a box of pasta partially consumed and retaped with scotch tape and an opened container of dehydrated food with a broken seal. I found these items when I was at home unpacking them. There was a gallon of Milk with one day left on it. There were some other items with an expiration date of Sep. 2019...?? We are 4 months into 2021. I am familiar with dairy products and am knowledgable about how to ascertain between what is spoiled or still fit to consume, yet I do not believe even someone who is receiving free food from a place like this should ever receive anything with one day until, or actually expired, food items, let alone almost two years expired. I have had to dispose of items from Snow Cap that were over a year old before, however, since I had not been there before, or any food bank, I thought and hoped it might be a one time thing. They should have daily dating inspections and those handling the food should be trained to be aware and segregate such items not allowing them to be handed out. As I mentioned, I am appreciative for their help, and I understand that all items are donated, however, it really does no help to give someone in need uneatable food causing even more anxiety and despair in an already frighteneing time for some of us. Whomever is tasked with the responsibility of quality and ensuring only safe and fresh Items are received and then passed on to those in need, is not performing there duties satisfactorily. I would wager if one became sick from a foodborne issue from something received here there would be no liability. read more

I love donating to Snowcap over Goodwill. I know all my clothes and items go directly to people in need and doesn't get marked up and sold.

These people are so helpful, and nice. We have SnowCap deliver boxes once a month to some folks in the apartment building I live in. They are always pleasant, courteous, and usually smiling. (They haul heavy food boxes around. Can't blame them for not always smiling.) But, always pleasant. They were here about an hour and a half ago, then left. I just saw them pull back up to deliver 1 box, to person. Very awesome. These people help keep the faith in humanity. read more

For the person commenting on expiration dates: Please note that one of the dates you posted is a best used by date, very different than expiration date, and even expiration dates have some leeway. (I could not read the other one clearly.) Think about it - if food is okay at 2 pm why would it not be good at 2:10 pm. These are guidelines and there is some leeway, and much of that depends on what the food is. For example milk: does it smell bad? or look curdled? I regularly drink milk that is past its date, but not usually if has been opened for the last few weeks. Fortunately I can usually smell it before I drink it. If I have just opened it, no problem. Once opened, it might go bad sooner than if it was fresher. With many items there might be some loss of nutrition over time, but it doesn't just all go away at a certain time. Use your best judgement, or ask as you did here. I hope this helps to ease your mind in general. read more
