But the other seasonals have been working together to build a community atmosphere. The people camping there are a great group of guys. This all-male clothing-optional gay campground is working hard to become West Michigan's premiere gay all-male campground. At this point, the pool is not yet open, and won't be ready for at least a month or two. Based on my personal experiences here, I would give it a 5-star rating.

I booked on August 8th for an August 15-18 stay, but had to cancel due to a death in my family. Bryan was unapologetic and downright rude about enforcing their rigid policy: within 14 days, you get nothing back. Outside that window? Still a $25 "admin fee" for a tent site. There are plenty of other gay campgrounds that are friendlier, more flexible, and actually care about their guests. Maybe that's why it was so easy to snag a last-minute reservation here. Pretty grounds can't cover up an ugly attitude.

There's a fantastic "Lodge" type building with a full kitchen and bathrooms up at the top of the hill that can be rented for weddings or large family reunions. They offer volleyball areas, kayak rentals and camping spots. You can get spots where you can park with water and electricity, or you can get more primitive spots where you need to hike in. Most spots have a cement fire pit. It's very family friendly with a nice little store for camping supplies, shirts or frozen treats. There's a nice, clean bath house and Port-a-John's for people who don't mind using those. For people who don't like campers or tents, Wabasis offers cabins and a cottage. The cottage has four bedrooms, a well stocked eat-in kitchen, living room, TV, rowboat and a bath. Two of the bedrooms have queen beds, one bedroom has two twin beds and one bedroom has a single twin bed. Someone could also sleep on the couch, and we have even had kids sleep on the love seat. The cabins offer two bedrooms, with a small kitchenette/couch but NO bathrooms. The cabins are clean and spacious for a family of four. One bedroom has a queen bed and the other offers two sets of bunk beds. There is a couch in the cabins for an extra person. Both the cabins and the cottage are pet-friendly. We enjoy camping and have camped at Wabasis with tents, and our camper. In the fall we usually rent the cottage or a cabin, depending on what's available and have all the kids and grandkids come for a long weekend. There are trails to hike, fishing, and boating.

The small lake was a hit with campers looking to cool off. Each site has electricity and a fire pit, but make sure you bring a grill to cook on or a pit grill to place on top of the fire pit. There's a large children's playground and horseshoes pits for the adults. Firewood is really cheap at $3/bundle and they even delivered it to your camp site. There are 4 restrooms on site, but no showers or running water. It's camping and not the Ritz-Carlton so make sure you know what you're getting into. Pete and Pat live on site and made sure to check on everyone at least once a day which was really nice. They even picked up our trash every morning. Make sure to bring cash as they don't take credit.

I'd probably camp here again but definitely pick a different site.

I loved our back-in spot that was on the pond. My golden retriever wasted no time in jumping into the big pond and started swimming. She loved it! Since we were at one of the pond spots, the pool, playground, and bathroom were very close by. The playground can use some updating, but that's not a big deal. The pool and deck area were clean. The kids were having fun and that's fine by me also. The bath house was recently updated. It was very clean and updated. Shower area was clean also, I was never worried about seeing random bugs or giant gross puddles. It's very well kept. The dogs and I took a few walks while we were there. If you go past the baseball fields, you get to the back section of the campground, more suited for tent camping. Those sites were very well-covered by the trees. That walk was very pleasant. The campground was super close to MSU campus, so that was a plus also. One minute you're on campus, the next minute you're in the country. We went around mid June and that Cottonwood was no joke. The campground certainly lived up to its name. It was basically a Cottonwood blizzard. Thank goodness I'm not allergic, but that may be a consideration for some. Like someone else said on their review, the fire pit wasn't a fire pit, it was a basically a huge divot in the ground that you can easily trip on because it's so shallow. We didn't use it because we didn't have time, but it's technically not false advertising because they didn't say "fire ring" as the amenity. Overall, we had a great experience and looking forward to coming back if we're ever back in the Lansing area.
