Being from "the city", until today our quest for "NY pizza" really resulted in one or two very…read moreclose calls.   First, don't dare be put off by the square footage (room enough for 3 lonely tables).  Yes, it's much like a small storefront Chinese restaurant that is "eat-in"--but REALLY "take-out".  All the better for counter person Casey to welcome you with a friendly greeting and a smile brimming with personality.  He is only too happy to explain that Express is one of the few shops that serve slices, just like NY.  Therein lies the reason we came in.  We were weary of carrying on our pizza pursuit without having to purchase a whole pie. Now, let's get to the thin layer of dough covered with "tomata" sauce and "mootz".  It was like a trip back to Brooklyn.  The crust was tender with just the right amount of crackle; the savory homemade sauce was just the right side of sweet; the cheese perfectly stringy. I can vouch for PE's right to call it NY Pizza . . . the Man(uel) with the paddle made his bones tossing pies at Pronto Pizza on 42nd & 5th.  I know.  I used to grab lunch there when I worked in the area. Great Pizza. Great staff.  Great service.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

But he says they make the sauce and dough so I thought I would give it a try. I ordered the 2 slice special with drink. The fountain seems to not be working, so they serve canned coke. No jarritos or iced tea. They didn't have basil today. So I got cheese with tomato. A little disappointed, but the counter guy was nice and probably the owner so I was happy to try. The pizza crust was flavorless and hard as a rock. The sauce was flavorless. It was the worst pizza I've ever had, but I'm hoping they get better. I might go back and try their Cuban sandwich, but as far as their pizza goes, never no way ever again.

We started out with a soda list that included a blonde root beer for me and a Shirley Temple soda for my wife. After we got them, my wife was not a fan of her soda, but Tianna got a replacement of a regular root beer that was a much better choice. The manager came by to make sure the new one was to our liking and also offered more suggestions the next time we came in. We shared a Abruzzese pizza which was delicious. Along with regular dough, they offer gluten free and cauliflower crusts. The inside of the restaurant is small but feels comfortable with booths. Tables and bar seating. We ended our meal with a chocolate budino which was the perfect ending. (Sorry, no pic as it was gone too fast!) In a world with too many chain restaurants with average menus, Blue Highway stands out as a road less taken and it truly did make all the difference!
