The smud building is pretty cool. There is a display of a real energy saving house. It's was my first time in the building. It makes you think of all of the appliances you have in your house, how old they are and how you can cut your bill by buying energy saving items. Smud is an Outstanding Company, especially when compared to PG&E's price per KW. Additionally they have a charging station for EVs (Electric Vehicles) that is a real bargain. someone in the discount department by the name of Anthony who by the way did not make any sense and hasn't been properly trained to process low income applications called me to deny my application for the low income because they calculated my income incorrectly the first time then had me reapply again with more documentation just so they can deny me because I have been injured dont have income at the time. this man said he's hes calculating my income from a chart he was given which totally contradict any facts and basically denied because he said I am too low income to qualify for the program. whoever is running this program in Sacramento county need a to be fired because of how these guys are trained to process applications and are not qualified to do so!!! read more

I have been a smud customer since moving here in November, 1979. I have always been impressed with SMUD's operation and reliability. Recently, our street received a notification that on August 20th (today) due to crane work. This morning, a SMUD truck did a street check for availability. The crane arrived soon after, along with a fleet of vehicles. The crane operator, from Maxim, was very personable and thoughtful. He went out of his way to be sure everyone was taken care of. The work is still ongoing, but unfortunately I had to stop to recharge my phone. The entire experience was well handled both professionally as well as personable. Customer for 13 years. Went on website to change to auto-payment. For whatever reason it was not clearly setup and I received a late payment notice with a late fee attached to my account Totally dissatisfied with this process to 'simplify' payment. Called customer service to change back to 'manual' bill payment. Staff offered to waive the modest late penalty which I appreciated. Thought I was back to my original paper bill & payment. Then I realized I was not after being double charged by SMUD. I'm not impressed with the complete lack of clarity in what should be a basic procedure & incomplete resolution of my situation. Last Saturday, June 21st, I tried to pay my SMUD bill over their 742-7683 phone, as I was doing for years. For some reason that nobody could explain to me, this option was deleted, and I had to wait for their business hours and a live Rep. Well, it took SMUD 3(three) absolutely worthless ladies and me - 45(forty-five) minutes, along with a couple dozen repetitions of spelling my account # 2089038, name and address OVER and OVER and OVER again, even though my name pops up the moment account enters... As for today, June 24th, I still don't know if they got it; it's too soon to check my banking account yet. read more

He fixed it. I have always loved SMUD. I have received emails from SMUD Energy Store for years. I finally decided to take advantage of their offer for highly discounted THERMOSTAT that they offered, as well as the $99.00 installation charge. They had a company called PORCH contact me that same day and made arraignments for installation. Then they changed the dates. Then when the date arrive, Jan 7, they never showed up. They made another date for Jan 15th, they showed up an hour late, but what the heck, they showed up. This guy showed up, who was supposed to be HVAC qualified, spent 6 HOURS trying to install the thermostat, ending up cutting all the wires that lead to the heat pump, crossed a bunch of wires, and fried the new thermostat. I called SMUD Energy Store and they told me that they are not responsible because PORCH is NOT affiliated with them. I then found out that SMUD Energy Store is not related to SMUD, and that they are in fact a company in El Paso Texas. I also found out PORCH is not a California company either, they are in Seattle. So I had to call Clark and Rush to fix my system because I had no heat in the coldest week of the winter so far, and it cost me over 340.00 for the pleasure. So I buy a thermostat from SMUD Energy Store, who I thought was a SMUD business, and some fly by night company from Seattle, and I am out the cost of the new thermostat, the 99$ installation, days of freezing weather and 340.00$ to fix they screw up, and neither SMUD, SMUD Energy Store, and obviously Porch could not care less and refuse to respond to me or take any responsibility. read more

Disconnected at 10:00 p.m. ... so when customer service is already closed. I couldn't talk to anyone or do anything about it. I went into the SMUD office to take care of my address change and make a payment because I was was having a hard time speaking with someone over the phone and online services.I appreciate both the staff that assisted me. Especially Celes like "Celestial "she had great communication skills and knowledge of other services that SMUD provides that one would not know about normally. Going to SMUD may take time out of your day but it's worth it. They can help you save especially if you keep paying HIGH SMUD and you don't understand why. Go ask. SMUD has been a lifesaver during COVID-19. Brandon, one of SMUDS Energy Consultants assisted me with gaining access to a program called, HEAP, a program that helps people with utilities. Currently, unemployed I was grateful to have SMUD, navigate the maize in order to receive assistance on my energy and utilities. I had applied to HEAP last year, and received no response. Without Brandon's help, I would not have received support from HEAP. I'm quite grateful for SMUD caring about their customers. read more

They try to get their customers to pay for problems created by SMUD. Recently had a blown transformer due them not trimming branches they should gave done a while back. It took out two of our appliances. Technician that was working on blown transformer after we got power back said to call an electrician and appliance technician, and if that didn't work to file a claim with smud and we would be refunded. We did all of that only to get a denial letter for our claim stating we had 60 from date of letter to take legal action. So we are supposed to come out of pocket more and further tie down our legal system because you dont want to do the right thing? They damage your property while making repairs and do not fix the damages. Maybe just be honest with your customers so the don't spend time and money getting an electrician and appliance technician. I called SMUD's tree service because there were several tree branches on my property which were entangling my neighbor's power lines. It can cause an outage during the Winter winds. Call center rep Vanessa sent out a tree trimmer on the same day. He cut down several branches and was done in five minutes. He did a satisfactory job. read more

SMUD's line & tree crew did a great job on our urgent problem. A 70' tree dropped a massive trunk onto our yard and it hit the power lines. Two or three transformers blew out. The entire block went dark. The team worked from about 7pm to 630am, nonstop it seemed, to finalize the job. As they trooped out of my yard, looking dirty and tired, I thanked each person. I have auto pay set up on my SMUD account. For some reason it did not work because of my bank and they charged me $18 for it On a $10 energy bill. I don't know of an alternative to SMUD BUT THEY SUCK! Solar might be a better option if you are reading this. read more

They use Experian to verify you for starting service. Not an issue, until after you provide your full name, address, SSN, DOB, phone number, DL license number and still cannot move forward. I have to drive a 4 hr roundtrip to show someone my DL. I mean, I can renew a passport, replace my ID, open a bank account, get a remote job, buy and sell homes, buy and sell cars, but I can't turn power on at my new house without physically appearing to show a clerk my license. LOL something's wrong with this picture. If it's not SMUD, then they have an issue with Experian's service, either way I don't appreciate my time being wasted for no good reason. SMUD is fine when it comes to providing power, but the automated phone system is HORRIBLE! I moved and wanted to pay my final bill, so I tried to login online (which I've always done to pay my bill). SMUD had already shut me out of the system and canceled my online account, so I called (mind you, the account closed 4 days ago). The phone system had me punch in my phone number and old address. It didn't recognize me. So, I spoke with a nice customer service person who found me in the system and told me my remaining balance. I asked him if I could pay by credit card over the phone. He said he would send me back to the automated system to pay because he would have to charge me over $4 to take that info. WHAT?!! I told him that the system didn't recognize my phone number, so he gave me the account number and told me it doesn't usually recognize the phone number after the account has been closed. Back in the automated system, it didn't recognize my account number either. GRRRR! So, here I go to the SMUD building to pay my bill because their phone system is absolutely LAME! BOOO! read more
