Adorable little place. Staff was very nice. Food was good. The TV dinner was a perfect portion. I wasnt fond of the beans - but thats just my preference. The corn bread was amazing. The burnt ends were tender. Didnt need extra sauce but I did try a little of the spicy - tasty.
Smokin J's BBQ is a straight up legendary place. I can't speak on the venue or customer service because I ordered via DoorDash, but the food was on point. I had the brisket which was Smokey, juicy and tender as they come. Those Texas Twinkies were top tier! Overall, a great spot for your BBQ cravings.
Came here because our friend was gifted a gift card to come here. The bbq was good, the bark on their brisket was actually pretty impressive. Service was cool, nothing special the girl behind the counter was a young introverted young lady that answered questions. Plenty of outdoors seating here bathroom is located right in front of the smoker which is cool to see. I highly reccomend the brisket melt. It comes on sourdough bread and it was greasy and delicious. Great spot to bring the kids after the park or train ride and plenty of parking across the street. We'll be back
This is beginning to be a habit! Smokin J's is located in the Old Poway Village Shopping Center. A beautiful and historic part of Poway. It's the exact type of place I look for when I travel. Fortunately for me (but not my waist line) it's close, convenient, and open seven days a week! They have an extensive menu of delicious barbecue items that will satisfy everyone in your party. My go to is the pork belly taco. Although it's not prepared consistently (sometimes the pork is one large piece and other times it's chopped). I prefer it whole, but it's always tasty either way. I also like the brisket sandwich. My new favorite sides are the crack beans and cornbread (perfect texture and density). They don't have beef ribs on the menu but I was told they sell it once in a while. Bonus: gift cards are sold at Poway Costco.
Been wanting to try some great BBQ for a while and heard this place was just that! A little drive for me, but what the heck. If its great, they will come! Nice place with good outdoor seating in the old area of Poway. I had the brisket, mac and cheese, cole slaw, baked beans, and the beef tallow fries! The winner of the day was definitely the fries, but the brisket came in a close second. Melted in your mouth brisket. Mac and cheese and cole slaw were formidable and the baked beans were tasty. The only downfall was the BBQ sauce which seemed kind of watered down. Not much flavor. All in all good BBQ. Will definitely be back!
***take out review*** The TV dinners are small. Any grown adult will need to add more meat. The BBQ sauce is super tasty and needed for the dry chicken. Corn bread was very dense and a bit bland. My wife loved the potato salad and brisket. My favorite part was the sausage. So yummy. I'll go back to dine in and hope for a better experience. I have faith. Worth the try!
Top 2 best BBQ in San Diego. I've tried 'em all. These boys have got that authentic bbq flavor that keeps everyone coming back. Not gonna tell you who is tied with them, you can do your due diligence. For the record, I never thought in a million years that I would order and then absolutely love a bbq burrito, but holy fudge so bomb. And huge. Cool brothers that own it and the downtown spot is on point too. Maybe some better brews on tap tho, that hazy gives me bubble guts. BBQ is life! Keep it up fellas.
Everything here is absolutely delicious. Quick, friendly, counter service where you take can take your food to one of the shaded tables outside to enjoy.
Our group of about 30 came on a Sunday afternoon. Seating is very limited so keep that in mind if you come with a big party. They don't take reservations and it is open and outdoor seating (no indoor seating is available). Lots of free parking available in the lot or street parking. It's the type of place where you order at the counter and the staff brings out your order. There could be a long line depending on the day/time you go. I opted to order the 3x3 which ample enough for 2 people to share! I shared my entree with my daughter. Since we aren't fans of beans and cole slaw, I requested an upgrade to the Mac n Cheese and they were able to accommodate. My meal came with brisket, pulled pork, chicken leg and thigh, cornbread, and mac n cheese. The flavor was real smokey and the bbq had a nice flavor - not spicy and not sweet. Surprised that everything was delicious! The brisket is my favorite and in fact I ordered 1lbs of brisket as takeout. I paid about $80 which isn't cheap but a solid spot as an option to eat out in the area.
Pretty sweet bbq place outside seating with a good view of the historic poway train yard. I had the pork belly sandwich which was really good. They were out of corn bread to i went with the baked beans they were okay. Beans with celery kinda leaves a funny after taste. Bbq sauce was okay spicy could be more spicy but its poway soo ya know. Over all pretty good.
This was the best bbq I've had outside of Texas. The place is so cute and all the workers were sooo friendly! Worth my 1.5 hour drive there! I will absolutely be back. My daughter has celiac and safely ate the ribs and chicken salad!! Everything gluten free was clearly marked. They were so sweet and gave me a free dry rub!!
This is a small jewel in a old neighborhood in Poway. People working in the restaurant are friendly with family like vibe. They are one of few places that offers dry rub BBQ around here. The BBQ is good. I guess was not how I wanted to be but, there was many customers taking togo so, I guess is popular here.
We heard their breakfast menu returned to the Poway location so we just had to come back to see if it was as delicious as we remembered! But I have gotten accustomed to their regular burritos at this point, so which burrito would I choose? Well, we came at 11AM and both the brunch as well as the lunch menu were available, so we ordered from both menus! We ordered the breakfast brisket burrito ($18), Cali J-rito ($19.25), and cajun fries ($6.50). - Breakfast brisket burrito: I did not take a picture of the brunch menu (to provide you the specific ingredients), but there was a hefty portion of brisket and a runny egg inside. It was just as delicious as I remembered. - Cali J-rito: If you can't make up your mind regarding whether you want pork belly or brisket, don't worry about it. There is a giant helping of both stuffed into this burrito. - Cajun fries: I always order these because the seasoning is out of this world, but I never understand why the fries are not crispy? I generally take them home as leftovers to reheat and crisp up in my air fryer. ONE DAY, I will try the other items that I am desperately wanting to try (brisket hash, melted bird, boneless rib sandwich, brisket chimi fries), but when I show up I automatically crave the burritos. The main drawback from the whole dining experience is the only option for outdoor dining. WHY is it so hot yet the outdoor fans are not turned on? I was sweating from the spicy BBQ sauce (TOO spicy. I much prefer their regular BBQ sauce and homemade ketchup) and the oppressive heat. Also SO MANY FLIES. I don't know if they grow them bigger in North County, but the flies were huge, had no fear, and kept trying to crawl into my paper bag of fries. I don't think I can come back this summer for dine-in, only take-out. The bathroom is for the entire shopping center (doesn't belong to Smokin J's). There is only a hand dryer so for those of you who do not like touching the door knob with your bare hands after you've just washed them, I would recommend bringing a paper towel with you.
Came right after our workout right before they closed! Woohoo!!! Got their burnt ends, hot links, wings and brisket chilli. Even though we came right as they were about to close, Ryan was so kind and gave us great recommendations and guided us to order some total winners! Everything was so delicious, sauces were on point. The smoke and cook of everything was made to perfection, and the place is such a vibe! The seating area is outside, and even though it's out in the patio, the tables, chairs, spotless and squeaky clean. We will totally be back!!! read more
One of the worst we've had... actually the worst. Super dry, bbq sauce couldn't save it. The sides also couldn't save the meal. Was surprised we had to order everything in 1/2 lb, all other places allow less (ie 1/4lb) so customers can try different meats. We ended up ordering double what we wanted and ended up double disappointed. Service was slow, we shouldn't have to wait 10 min to get a beer with 2 other customers around. Half of the beers on tap were out (on a Sat at 3). Apparently phone calls are more important than people waiting in line. Anyway, spent far too much for some pretty terrible bbq... literally went to the Birria food truck 2 min away right after... just really disappointing overall. Poor food, poor service. read more

Smoking J's was a smoking good time for our group. We came hungry after hiking the potato chip rock. I ordered the full rack of ribs and I normally eat about two bones but today, I had four bones and could have kept going if I didn't refrain myself. The rib was well marinated and well BBQ'd. My friends got the TV dinner with brisket, the burrito, and the pull pork sandwich. All were very delicious. We would totally come back for more good food and good fun with good company. I didn't love but I also didn't hate it... The only seating available is outside and the music is classic calm. The service, well you walk in order you food & drinks, find a seat, they bring your order out and that's about all the service we got. We ordered 2 drinks & TV dinners which came out to around $50 ish+. So the food... the sausage needed more bacon or whatever fat they use as it was a bit crumbly/dry but the flavor was good. The coleslaw, well that had zero flavor so much so I'd say Caines and KFC has better slaw. Mac & Cheese same as the slaw. As for the Brisket that was Very good and tender, that was the only winner out of both our meals. We did purchase 2 sides to take home which was the Brisket and Pork Bell. For the price we expected more than what we got. The brisket again won! As for recommending... it's tough cause I wanna say no because more of the food was disappointing, the price point was a bit high and there's no indoor seating (was a rainy day but there was a break when we went). Then I want to say yes because maybe it was a bad day( though they seemed pretty happy) or maybe a new cook, or maybe just give it another try but consistency would then fall into place. I'll preface this review by saying I am from Texas and have high BBQ standards. The brisket was tender and not too fatty. It was a little dry and could use a bit more seasoning but overall a solid BBQ experience in San Diego. I really enjoyed the BBQ sauce, not too spicy and a good compliment with the pulled pork. Definitely scratches that itch of what I miss from Texas. I would definitely come back! read more

So I had to come back for an update. This time I had the Two Taco Plate. Wow, amazing, knocked out of the park good. I ordered the brisket and pork belly tacos. So first of all, they heat up the corn tortillas to a light crisp. That is the best way to have them in my opinion. The brisket was outstanding. You taste the smoke, mixed with the chimichurri sauce, and pickled onions. This is such a great combination. The smoke meat balances out the pickling of the onions. Now the pork belly fills you mouth with a smoked juicyness that only Smokin J's can do. In all the meat they have. Always ask for the fatty cuts. The fat makes all the difference. Parking: small lot and street parking. Came friday 6pm and found parking easily and no line. Food came out in less than 10 mins. Smokin J was soooo good! Super tender and juicy brisket with crispy pork belly that was juicy one u bit into it. Id def get this again. Chicken tv dinner was not dry, good flavor. Ambiance: outdoor seating only. The western charm of this place really adds to the vibe and makes it stand out from other BBQ joints. Gives you a sense of stepping back in time. I love the old town area of Poway and it's so fun to walk around here after you're finished eating. The food here was just fantastic too! The pork belly and brisket were both melt-in-your-mouth delicious. They were cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of smoky flavor. I couldn't get enough of them. The Cajun fries were another highlight. They came in generous portions, perfect for sharing. Dipping them into the extra BBQ sauce was so much fun and added an extra kick to every bite. The BBQ sauce deserves a special mention--tangy, sweet, and absolutely addictive. It paired wonderfully with everything on the plate. The overall experience was enhanced by the lively yet relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed sitting at the wooden tables. Such a great spot to enjoy some top-notch BBQ. read more

Ordered burnt ends, 1/2 rack ribs and brisket fries with beans and slaw. Food was delicious and meats were tender. Rib meat was firm but tender not dry like other places. Service was good. Seating area is outdoors in old town Poway and perfect way to enjoy the weather and food. They offer TV dinner portions which are a fun throwback and nicely packaged for pkup read more

Smoking J's has been a favorite since I found out about how good the food is 3 years ago now. Any time Im near by its a must for lunch or dinner. My wife and I were in the area and discovered this spot through Reddit, so we decided to give it a try. We found plenty of parking and, surprisingly for Labor Day lunch, it wasn't too crowded. The seating area was average, the ambiance was normal bbq joint, and the service was amazing. As a backyard smoker for a few years, I'm pleased to say this place has earned my seal of approval. We opted for the 3 x 3 and added pork belly for just $4 more--highly recommend this addition. We also tried the Cajun fries, which were generously portioned. The two of us were satisfied, though if you're very hungry, you might consider upgrading to 8oz sides or ordering the TV dinners individually. The brisket was wonderfully smoky and moist, with a delightful crunchy bark. We got some slices from the point part of the brisket, which is the better portion of the meat and much fattier. I wanna say they don't wrap it in the smoking process because of that crunchy bark. I'm tempted to skip the wrapping in my smoking process to preserve that perfect, crunchy bark, like Smokin J's does it. The rub on the chicken had me weak--it's not often I enjoy smoked chicken, but this one may have changed my mind. The pulled pork was moist and flavorful, and had that rub flavor in every bite. Pairs well with the bread, coleslaw, pickled onions, pickle and bbq sauce. The standard barbecue sauce was on point, even though the food didn't really need it at all! This place really is one of the best bbq joints in San Diego. I'm for sure coming back next time I'm in the area. read more

Very good BBQ that's worth the drive to Poway. The Smokin J's Sandwich - Brisket, pork belly, and slaw piled high on a toasted brioche bun. It was an enjoyable flavor bomb that had some of the best pork belly I've ever had. This is a MESSY experience for sure, so be sure to grab a fork. The sides are equally tasty. I've been to Terry Blacks Barbecue in Austin Texas and I thought Smokin J's was better. I'll upgrade to 5 stars if my next visit was just as good as my first one. - I've seen their gift cards at the Costco off Carmel Mountain Road. But I haven't seen them at other Costco locations. - This small place is very popular even during off hours. There's a large park across the street with plenty of places to sit and eat. read more
Their pork belly is to die for!!!! Crunchy and juicy...melt in your mouth!!! Sooooo good I ordered brisket, ribs, pork belly, mac n cheese and bean cracks. The brisket was tender and flavorful. Surprisingly, as a non-bean eater, i liked their bean cracks. They smoke the best right outside the restaurant. The inside space is small and no seating but outside seating is available. read more

This place is all hype. The food definitely looks good, presentation and all. Dry flavorless food, chicken, ribs, brisket broke apart and was crumbling. It was weird. The fries, corn bread and blueberry cobbler was not any better. The only thing that lived up to its name was the bean crack. The only thing that I enjoyed. The BBQ was good. The coleslaw wasn't my favorite, but the mac n cheese was great. They give you tons of meat on your sandwich, I think we made 3 meals out of it, LOL. Service is very efficient and very friendly. Cute outside seating. I would definitely go back and try more food here! read more

Came in with a big appetite after a hike. Walked in to order and then chose a table outside to eat. We brought our dog because they are dog friendly. After a short time, they bring out your food with a giant container of BBQ sauce. The food was DELICIOUS. Best BBQ in San Diego. The Breakfast J-tito: Smoked brisket, over easy egg, cheese, tater tots in a toasted tortilla. So much flavor in one bite, and adding the BBQ sauce is dangerous. The Bean Crack: delicious beans and meat! Nothing else to say! The tables outside are cool and covered by shade. There is plenty of seating. Will come back again! read more

If you're looking for some authentic Texas style BBQ in San Diego then this is definitely the place to go! Their brisket is so juicy and melts in your mouth. We usually go for the sandwiches when we come because the only meat options are a little too much meat for us. But their sandwiches are really tasty. Today's special was the spicy brisket melt and it was sooo good- had melted cheese, pickles, and the brisket was so tender. I also always recommend their chimi fries! Their fries are cooked perfectly and it's topped with chimichurri and more brisket. Although it's a little pricey, you can tell they put a lot of effort into cooking their meats. The place is in the middle of Old Poway and they have cute seating outdoors. Their service is really quick as well! read more

Holy cow, what a wonderful surprise of a find. we were out in the area an went a different way home then we usually do. Saw this wonderful waft of smoke and smelled the deliciousness in the air and made a pit stop. We ordered the 3x3 platter to get a quick sample of things. It did not disappoint. If I had to find a negative in anyway the chcken to me was a tad bit dry, but I was able to hide that small misstep with their very yummy and super spicy, spicy BBQ sauce. Their picked onions and corn bread unexpected star for me too. While this is not a place that is close to us we will be making a trip to this location as often as we can. read more
We visited on a SJ BBQ on a Sunday afternoon, lucky for us it was quite empty, winning! Patio area was clean and had plenty of outdoor seating, no indoor, which is visible from their site-Yelp! We were greeted upon entering and ordered quickly. Merchandise was located inside for purchase, which we looked at while waiting. Nice relaxing vibe with good BBQ. Their BBQ sauce is Smokey and peppery I.m.o, I favored it next to ketchupy/ sweet bbq sauce. Ordered: 3x3, 2 grilled cheese with fries and a brisket melt. I lived the spicy brisket melt, it was gooey, sweet and spicy. The crisp pickles were so good! A great texture combo, the jalapeño kick was unexpected but so delicious. Overall I enjoyed it as did my family, nice spot to take family or just have a beer with a friend. read more

They serve beer but I don't think they still have the shiner bock anymore.
Is there gluten/dairy/soy free options?
Aside from the obvious items (buns, Mac n cheese, pecan pie), everything is gluten and dairy free. The only thing we have that has trace amounts of soy is our bbq sauce.
