Because Good News is situated in the heart of Soho, where all of London's hippest fashion houses, production companies and media firms are generally based, it needs to offer it's clients something different. Sure, you can get the usual paper, a juice and a bag of crisps but I've never seen so many magazines. If your looking for fashion, music, business or art, they have every single commercial, weird and underground paper and magazine you can imagine and even stock some industry mags as well like Music Week for example. Although I don't work in Soho anymore, if I pass this shop, I always stop by and pick up a magazine I know I can't get anywhere else...

Ive been here several times looking for international press, but found that delviery is not very reliable, some sundays they don't receive international press until midday and some others they don't receive it at all. Plus the staff is not very helpful or friendly, always getting a "don't know, no idea" when asking if the papers will come / what time. Luckily there's a kiosk just outside the station (Bishopsgate exit) that somehow always manages to receive all the papers on time...same price and you get a smile and a "have a good day" with your press. How photos are placed and which stories are chosen to meet your eye. Even ads help tell a story about the medium and you, the reader. These facts really pop when you can see a bunch of papers and magazines side by side. It is then when you can measure the soul of the news outlets. So here at Falstaffs you can browse scores of daily papers from all over the world, not to mention leading magazines. In an instant you can see how the world reacts to major stories. I can't read Russian or Arabic, for example, but you can decipher their coverage of similar stories based on placement and photo selection. But you don't always need to be so insightful. They'll also sell you The Sun which you can read at the pub across the street.

Yet all this pales to the exquisite selection of magazines you have on offer. I spent a good ten minutes gazing longing at the shiny covers wishing I could sit and read them all. You ask, "You were a pretty, pretty butterfly?" And, you ask: "Fidel Castro probably isn't dead, but you were him in a past life anyway?" To which I respond "Hot Jacket Potatoes!" Freedom press has the benefit of a great location. It's down some pedestrian alleyway which gives the store an air of the secret and unknown. "Oh la la," you think as you walk to it. Inside, however, was not my cup of perfect tea (although there were a few real cups sitting around the store. Also, my perfect cup of tea is a full bodied orange spice from Seattle Washington). There were different sections - history, science fiction, biographies, sociological stuff, etc. but all revolving around the theme of fancy dress parties - and by that I mean anarchy and revolution! This bookstore would be your reading list if you took a class named Social Uprising and Revolt 101 and beyond. I guess some of the books would be pretty interesting, but I'd have to read them to find out for sure. There's also a section with anarchist-like clothes (mostly t-shirts) with designs such as the Queen's head over the crossbones of a skull and crossbones. I thought that was pretty amusing. If you're feeling rebellious or if you like defying authority, you should probably check this place out. Maybe that's 'cause I'm politically interested. And it's true, they do stock mainly anarchist literature, but also a mean line in pamphlets, magazines, and general anarchist publications. It's really worth visiting, tucked innocently off Angel Alley (something of the Harry Potter, eh?) and up a flight of stairs which it appears hasn't been renovated since this place opened (all the better for it in my opinion), it's basically crammed full of really interesting books on politics and the ways of the world. In their magazine section, they had a title called Mao or Never, which claimed to be the only Maoist publication in Britain to boast a colour cover. That's a really fun joke if you're in these circles, thing was mocked up! The staff, too, are really nice. I had a request for a really obscure book, they looked, couldn't find it and were really apologetic. So, if you're passing the KFC on Whitechapel High Street, come in here for a browse. I bet there's at least one book which you'd like to take home.

They have an excellent array of daily press and monthly magazines, the fridge is stocked full of drinks, there's a massive amount of sweets, whilst in the back you'll find an impressive amount of stationary, cards and wrapping paper. The added extras are the ability to send money abroad via Western Union and you can do the lottery. Whoo hoo! I am impressed with Capital Newsagents. Rock on guys!

Just get your stock in and always make sure you don't run out of cigarettes and miniature bottles of whiskey. Easy. But simple things go wrong all the time right? England penalties, scrambled eggs, trousers...So, here's a pat on the back to a newsagent doing it really well. They don't run out of newspapers, the drinks selection is just right, it's warm in the winter and they sell a few decent cards for when you forget someone's birthday.
