The history of this shop is amazing, suffice to say this is the same shop where Winston Churchill regularly bought his stogies. He even sat upstairs in the VERY nicely remodeled Sampling Lounge, most likely looking out the window at all the hustle & bustle of St. James Street below. Every time I've visited London, I've always made it a point to come here, and this visit I was here every day! As the world's oldest tobacconist it certainly was a worthwhile visit in several ways. Huge selection of Habanos with plenty of limitadas, regionales and standard Cuban cigars on sales. Prices are high but the quality and rarity makes it worthwhile. I managed to grab some Punch Robustos that were just created in that size and arrived the day before. Giant selection of accessories, pipes and tobacco. Winston Churchill museum downstairs with a small but unique collection of his items including a chair which is a must stop for a photo with your smoke. Spacious lounge upstairs with plenty of seating, free beverages and more memorabilia. Staff was super helpful and friendly and made some great recommendations. Very cool cigar store in a nice area. Wanted some Cubans, they have a lot here. Upon entering, my wife and I were greeted by a very friendly older gentleman. He suggested a mild, short cigar for my wife to try as I shopped. She retired to the smoking lounge upstairs and I was helped by a nice lady who helped me choose a variety of cigars to try. Packaged nicely for taking back to the States. I joined my wife in the lounge and we chatted with some nice folks as we finished her stogie. Quickly perused the cigar "museum" downstairs. Just wow. We visited from Nj with friends and we were told about this amazing cigar spot that has been there forever. Long story short my fiancé and I were able to make it there for an hour. George really made this an amazing experience for us. He was well dressed, personable, knowledgeable, funny, patient and more. He had recommended 2 great cigars the Drew Estate L40 and Bolivar. JJ Fox on St James is the epitome of a classic tobacconist. They are the second oldest tobacconist in the world only to A La Civette in Paris however Fox feels far more sophisticated and classy. I think it is the knowledgeable, well appointed gentlemen that so nicely assist you with your purchase that make shopping here a cut above most other shops. This visit it was a couple of Juan Lopez Seleccion Superba UK Regional Edicions for £40 apiece. Cigars are certainly expensive in England however when they kindly invite you upstairs to their beautiful smoking lounge it makes it all worth the price. Any one that has a serious passion for quality cigars needs to visit JJ Fox on St James at least once in their life. This is probably one of the coolest cigar shops I've been to in a long time. They have a very, very full humidor and everything in here is so refined, high class ... very much a place I didn't feel like I belonged. Nevertheless, the sales people made it very easy and were super helpful in assisting with my purchase. I came here for some obvious stated reasons, Cubans! I know absolutely nothing about cigars, but when I was in Miami earlier this year, we tried to look for Cubans just for fun, and of course ... embargo! The sales staff are extremely friendly, and nonjudgmental. This is the one thing I have loved about being overseas. I always feel like in the US unless you look a certain way or are carrying certain brands, some stores just stare you down. Especially if you appear touristy, the employees typically release a slight 'sigh' and help you unwillingly. This is NOT the case here! My sales guy spent 20 minutes explaining to me what Cubans were, what people usually like, what I might find interesting, and even allowed me to take pictures all up in the place because I'm a huge tourist. He wrapped my stuff up very nicely and discretely and even gave me some pointers on the impending rain. Absolutely fantastic. read more

OK, I have to admit: I think I have a man crush on James J. Fox. Firstly, their staffs are all dressed impeccably. Which to me just says old traditional London. I did not have a tie on the day I visited and I felt underdressed. They are all fine chaps whom have forgotten more about Cuban cigars that I will ever know. Visit when you have some time to enjoy the upstairs lounge. Quite a respite. Of course they have a large selection of Cuban cigars many of which are now sitting in my humidor. this has been a bucket list destination for me for about 20 years. although I've been coming to London a lot recently, I finally had the opportunity to visit last week. the heritage and history makes it unique. it's been in business for over 200 years. inside it's very inviting. the huge walk-in humidor is nicely lit and has a fantastic selection. staff is super friendly and doesn't follow you into the humidor like many shops do. that's also very inviting prices are high, but the experience is totally worth it. to sit by a window, smoking a cigar inside (not many places where you can do this now) watching the view on St. James Street, is really special. You can find the exact same cigars at an airport duty free for 30-40% cheaper. They were selling Cuban half Coronas for €63 per box of 5. We found the same box at the duty free for €38. My two friends and I came here around 7pm looking to buy a box of Cubans and relax at their smoking lounge. We were unpleasantly greeted by staff and were informed the lounge was closed. This is where the proper English gents purchase their cigars. While I'm not a cigar expert, I imagine that they have quite the extensive and excellent collection. They prominently advertise Cuban cigars on a gold banner, which represents something a bit naughty and illegal in the US. I strolled by on a lazy late Monday morning, and the banner caught my eye. Mischievous thoughts went through my head, but I continued on without stopping. However, the impish adventurous side of me decided to go back to buy one (and start a Yelp thread about getting it back into the US). 2 proper English gents were manning the store and immediately greeted me and came to my assistance. In a mature fashion, I explained what I was looking for and they quickly pointed out something. There is a small seating area beyond the counter where a man was leisurely puffing away in a well worn leather wing back chair. So it's an added perk to the cigar buying experience. I just got back from a 5 day trip to London and I can honestly say that my two visits to Fox of St. James were highlights from the trip. I arrived on a Sunday and by the time I got my sea legs going after a long flight, I discovered that retail shops are either closed or work retail hours (don't they know I'm on USA time!!). Fortunately I ended up discovering a Hotel that has an outside smoking terrace and met a local chap that gave me the lay of the land for Cigar Aficionado's and he highly recommended Fox. He emphasized that the selection of Cuban's were great but since you could find them at most shops he said what set Fox apart was the upstairs smoking room which includes coffee, water, bathrooms, & wifi (that's like the 4 keys to survival for a traveling tourist after Cuban Cigars). So on the next day I decided to experience Fox for myself after a 3 hour trip to the British Museum which means I was ready for some downtime with a smoke. The main room that you enter is a exactly what you hope to see in a cigar shop - dark wood paneling, antique furniture fixtures, friendly staff and then a large walk in humidor lined with Cuban cigars!! The Cigar Consultants there are friendly and well versed in making recommendations so you're in good hands. And of course I went there for the Cubans and I was not disappointed since they have it all (too many to lists but trust me you will be smiling from ear to ear). I then ventured upstairs to sitting room that overlooked St. James Street and there were about 8 Gentleman sitting there having casual conversation. I took my jacked off and then heard a voice ask me if I the spoked B on my shirt was a Boston Bruins shirt which of course it was and then before I know it a guy walked over to me with his hand out and said I'm Richard from LA and I love the Bruins. We then e dominated the conversation for the next 10 minutes and then I heard another voice mention how the Canadiens always seem give the Bruins a hard time and then I met Pierre from Montreal, Canada who was sitting with Andy from Australia. At this point, I don't want to bore you with Hockey talk but the conversation transitioned from Hockey to Politics to the correct Wifi password so everyone in the room was able to participate. I stayed till it closed (5:30 pm) and then talked to the staff for another 10 minutes raving about their shop. My 2nd trip to the shop was very similar along with bumping into Pierre & Andy again so if your looking for a unique cigar experience while in London - take the underground tube to the Green Park on the Jubilee line and you'll be in Cigar Heaven within a 5 min walk!! read more
