My wife was reminiscing about this place, she said that she used to go here, when she was a school aged child, so over 30 years ago. Since we moved back to town, she wanted to check it out again. I had never been here previously. She got the burger combo, with battered onion rings and a diet coke. She said that it was as perfect as she had remembered it. I got the clam dinner, substituting battered onion rings for the french fries. I also ordered an unsweet tea. They gave me french fries instead of the of the battered onion rings that I had ordered, and someone had accidentally put sweet tea in the unsweet tea pitcher. The waitress was very hospitable, bringing me another "unsweet tea", but it too was sweet, so I asked for water. She later brought me the battered onion rings. These hamburgers were AWESOME! This place is not a lot to look at as we almost missed it being visitors from out of town. After a quick U-Turn and pulling in the parking lot, I poked my head in the door to ask what the procedure for ordering was - old time drive in style - and we got into the menu. We ordered a variety of hamburgers and fries - everything came exactly as we had ordered and they were obviously freshly cooked. As always, a delightful experience with great service and good food. Mom and pop drive ins are the nostalgia that every town needs, but sadly a staple that not every town has. I'm thankful for mine. I always get the pizza steak -which is the weirdest concept ever! It's literally a country fried steak with melted mozzarella and pizza sauce but it's soooo good! And, I always get a root beer and tater tots. I literally dream about this meal. I've been eating it since I was young! I love my Smitty's! This place is always busy, always backed up with cars, and a friend living near desperately wanted to try their food so we came here during a not so busy time to grab some food to go. Their chili dogs are really good and extra stinky ( the good onion kind of funk lol) The burgers are alright, the tots are alright, the onion rings were good but thats all we tried this time. They used to be a go to spot for some good old fashioned greasy spoon/ hole in the wall cooking. But since their most recent fire and reopening, they fell from grace. Burgers are crap, waffle fries are worse grease sponges then before and that has been the case more than once. Shame, I love the old Americana type restaurants that are still open. This place is the best. The burgers are still made like they were in 1956, and the prices are excellent. Come here if you want diner food rather than a complicated culinary meal, and you will not be disappointed. Check out the menu online: it's not that complicated, and knowing what you want when you arrive will speed up service. Better yet, if you want your food to go, order by phone before you get there. Some are complaining about rude service, but I've never experienced that in 20+ years of going there from time to time. The workers are are members of our community, though, and I imagine they may not respond to a disrespectful customer like a high-school-kid working at Chick-Fil-A might. I was at a conference at Langley AFB last week and kept driving by Smitty's Better-Burger. Smitty's Better-Burger is an old fashion Mom-n-Pop car-hop restaurant that Ray Kroc and McDonald's put out of business. Their sign states they've been in business since 1956. So their longevity makes Smitty's a landmark in Hampton. I ordered two Better-Burgers with everything: cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, and grilled onions plus a large order of fries. The car hop was friendly and frankly quick with my order. They were busy but I was back on the road in minutes. Driving home (and stuck in tunnel traffic) the car smelled fantastic!! It is a large burger that covers the bun - that itself is a nice change. The fixin' were fresh and the burger very juicy. A very comfort food satisfying experience. Check out the kind of burger joint your Grandparents took for granted before McDonald's came along. Worth the trip if you're in the Hampton area. read more

I love mom and pop shops. They're nothing fancy but you best believe you'll get one of the greatest services in your life there. Smitty's has been in business for over 60 years (according to their signs) and I can understand why. The prices are hard to beat and the employees are helpful and extremely friendly. They have daily specials along with tons of menu items that you can either take to go or eat in the comfort of your own car. Ordering for three people we didn't spend more than $25 for full meals. We got burgers, a chicken sandwich, and multiple sides from onion rings, tater tots, and a fried apple dessert. We all ate our meals but collectively thought the food was just okay. Nothing special or noteworthy. For the price you pay you do get a good and fast meal for when you don't have anything to cook at home. read more
