Loved this attraction in pioneer square! Having lived here for 7 years I had overlooked this spot and finally had a chance to check it out when visitors came into town. I absolutely loved the historical information posted on all of the walls in the lobby mixed with the air of mystery. I especially enjoyed the pamphlets with the roles visitors could assume of each of the major players in the success and downfall of the Smith Tower. The active engagement employed by the team who designed the experience here is so effective in creating a feeling of being transported in time. It is by far the coolest place I've visited in town. While it is no longer the tallest building west of the Mississippi, it is certainly the most interesting in my opinion! The Chinese themed lounge at the top of the observation area was neat and offered a great selection of prohibition era drinks. The 360 degree view of downtown was also pretty neat. read more

Smith tower is/was AMAZING! We are so happy to have found the tower on google maps and chosen to visit it over the space needle. Patrick really made our experience the best. He had great recommendations, was so kind, and attentive. The fuego cocktail turned out to be our favorite. The pink elephant was also yummy as well as the pot stickers & deviled eggs. We wished we hadn't had such a large brunch to enjoy more drinks and snacks here. Now we know for next time. This was the highlight of our trip and we can't wait to be back. read more

Spontaneously visited here on a Saturday afternoon with a friend, and it was one of the most memorable experiences we had together. There's a historical exhibition on the first two floors, setting the essence of the time, and engaging the visitors to learn snippets of Seattle and Smith Tower's history leading up to the top of the tower. Once at the top, there's an indoors cafe with sitting area, and an outside "balcony-like" area in the perimeter. Outside, the view and lighting was amazing; perfect for pictures. We spent a good few hours taking portraits while soaking in the cityscape bliss. Overall, a fun way to know more about Seattle (and some photo op) with an amazing price if you're a Washington resident! Only $12 with a WA state ID or $18 if you pre-order online (as opposed to $20 retail). read more

After a wonderful underground tour is Seattle, we continued our Seattle visit with a trip to Smith tower. This tower was once the tallest skyscraper west of the Mississippi and has remained a Seattle icon. Upon entering the tower, there is a gift shop and entrance to the tower. After paying your fees, you embark on a self guided tour. At the end of your tour you're follow the signs to the 35 th floor viewing deck and bar. The viewing deck of the Smith towers will give you 360 views of Seattle. Luckily for us it was a clear and warm day in Seattle. We had amazing views of the city ! Hmm... I'm skeptical about my rating for this place and wish I could give it a 3.5 instead. There's no denying the historical (and cultural) significance of Smith Tower - it was once one of the tallest buildings on the West Coast and it gives you a different view of Seattle. You won't get the same gorgeous view as the Space Needle or Columbia Tower, and the bars on the outside of the window make it difficult to take good selfies (lol). You do, however, get a good view of Century Link... ;) The real highlight of visiting this place is the elevator - it's the old fashioned elevators that have operators to brake the elevator on different floors. the doors open and close accordion-style and each stop on a floor makes a defining brake sound. Pretty charming but also a tad nerve racking if you're not used to it. Some visitors may get frustrated if there's a line to go UP the elevator - they limit how many people get on board and if you try visiting on the weekdays, the wait is longer because people who work there have priorities in riding up (fun fact: the Seattle Lyft office is on one floor). Groupon often has 50% ticket deals to this place, so check it out if you're a local! I wouldn't recommend this site for the tourists, but if you live in the area and want another perspective of Seattle, check out the Smith Tower for its historical significance. I totally envy the lady and her 2 kids who live in the penthouse apartment at the very top of this tower... they definitely have the best view of Seattle. read more

I'm really sad we waited until the last day to come here. We had planned to visit early on during our trip but it kept getting pushed back. We came early on Sunday morning so there was no wait or crowds but we still had a few other spots to hit before making our way back to the airport so we didn't have much time to invest in the interactive exhibit, which seemed really fun, nor did we get a chance to have a drink while we enjoyed our view. All of the staff we encountered were extremely friendly and helpful. The building is beautiful and the history behind it all is very interesting. We chose this over heading up the Space Needle and I'm glad we did. We purchased some cool souvenirs before we left so we could share the excitement for the good time we had. If I'm ever back in Seattle I wouldn't hesitate to put this at the top of my list and give the tour and experience true justice. An excellent place to get a panoramic view of Puget Sound, downtown Seattle and the mountains beyond! Seattle's first skyscraper, built in 1914. It was the tallest building west of Chicago for almost 50 years! Usually not as crowded as many tourist spots, which is part of the bit. The outdoor viewing area goes around the building. I don't think you can beat if for a few quite memorable photos of Seattle! (I posted a few of mine, check 'em out!) PS The elevator ride is a blast from the past! read more

Building beautiful yes but I would have given this place a 2 star if we paid full price. You can go up and look around and be back on the ground within 15 minutes. After the space needle my husband and I were looking for more history of the city and found the Smith tower on groupon. The price was so desirable we couldn't pass up the opportunity to visit one of the oldest tallest building outside of new york city. We are so happy we stopped in. The Smith tower is filled with so much history and is absolutely stunning inside and out. The view it offers of the city is breath taking and remarkably, peacefull & beautiful. A totally different experience from the space needle. The bar at the top is filled with history and it's romantic. Definitely worth stopping in to see Seattle from a different view. read more

The bf and I got speical treatment during our visit to the Smith Tower. One of the elevator attendants gave us a mini tour of the other floors during our visit, probably because we were the last guests. But it was super cool to see the vacant offices, a little eerie, because the building is so old and vacant, but still very neat. The observation deck was very neat. I've never been up to the Needle before but I imagine this is cooler because it's taller and in Pioneer Square. We snapped photos from basically every corner of the building, it was a clear day so it was perfect. I also thought it was amazing that there was a lady that lives in the Smith Tower... I read all the articles about her place and just thought it was cool but a little lonely not having neighbors in the building. The Chinese room was very interesting too... we sat in the fertility chair, lol. I'm superstitious so I love those kinds of historical folklore/stories, so I had to. We'll see in a few years if the chair is really magical. read more

Really cool early 20th century skyscraper with a rich history and unique self-guided tour. The museum portion told the stories of the tenants of the building, many of which had quite interesting lives. At the top of the building is the bar, which gives access to a panoramic view of downtown Seattle. You can see some of the newer buildings, the sound, and the mountains as well. The drinks were great and we had some small bites too which were very satisfying. For a bar with the cover charge being basically a ticket to a museum, it's well worth the price of admission. read more

I finally made it out to Smith Tower while a friend was visiting! They also offer a Groupon deal for two passes. If you go during their open hours, then you get to look around the museum portion of it before going up to the observation deck. It was cool to read about the history of the building, and it had some interactive portions too. The lounge/bar was really cool. We went right before sunset. Great spot to enjoy a drink, snap some pictures.. and see a gorgeous sunset. People always said that this view was better than the Space Needle and I'd have to agree. The observation lookout is higher up, and you get a view of the Space Needle in your pictures. The deck itself is narrower, but less crowded here. So so so so AWESOME! I randomly found this pls e before leaving Seattle, and I'm so glad I stuck around to visit it. So unique and cool, and totally worth a visit. I wish the elevator had been hand-cranked up, but given the times we find ourselves in, I totally appreciate why that couldn't happen. Regardless, it did not detract from the experience and I would for sure go back. The view from the top is amazing - I think I may even say it's better than the space needle view (I know that sounds crazy). Anyway, if you're looking for something to do, I 100% suggest you go here. We went on a weekday right when they opened! It was honestly perfect. We almost had the place to ourselves. It's hard to find the entrance but go to the corner of the street and it's right there through large black glass doors. This place is so historic. The architecture work is breathtaking. Just trust me when I say this. Go to the restrooms. You'll be able to take a peak at the beautiful marble work on the steps. It's mesmerizing. It's a trip back in time. The China room was cool, however I much preferred the elevator ride up! It's the last few of its kind of being manually operated. I'm so happy we were able to go before they converte it over. The observatory deck though was REALLY cool. Going up on a clear day is worth it for sure. So try to plan for a clear day if possible! read more

We attempted to go tonight. The front desk was fumbling, and we got the shut down rushed version towards the elevator. Upon making it to the 35TH floor we walked around, then we're told where to sit. I absolutely LOVE the Smith Tower. I literally tell people all the time to come visit here if they have the time and the chance while they're downtown. It's just as great of a view from the Space Needle, if not better, in my opinion. There's a cute little gift shop in the lobby of the tower, and you get a great ride up in the elevator with the conductor. I've gone a couple times and each time have had the same elevator conductor and he's always hilarious and very personable. Fun fact: Did you know Seattle's Pixar location is located in the Smith Tower? You heard it here first, folks. The bar that they have at the top is a must-visit too. There's even light bites that you can order if you're not in the mood for a drink. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Seattle and one of the best places to bring out-of-towners or even just your local friends who haven't heard of the place. read more

If you are looking for a great view of the city without the hassle of being around a crowd- this is the place to go. Went here on a Friday and it was pretty empty. They have a nice gift shop and a small exhibit that you go through before hitting the elevators. It will tell you the history of the building and it is interactive. The wait for the elevator can take awhile but it's one of the coolest elevator ever. It's original and just being in it and seeing the intricate details is amazing. The trip up and down is pretty fast and somewhat smooth. When you walk out of the elevator, you'll come out onto their bar/restaurant. Love the design, the wood details on the ceiling and the cool furniture. They have food and drinks. Had a quiet drink and relaxed. The view is spectacular. There are lots of railings around the building so taking a clear picture of the view can be challenging. *If you are looking to bring your child, this may be a good alternative to the needle since it's less crowded. But much less child appropriate things to do here. The bar/restaurant also caters more for adults. They have allowed people to see the view for a long time and for a minimal fee. It's only been recently (aug 2016) that they have actually put in a tour/exhibit and the restaurant. Things change as the ownerships to the tower changes. So be sure to check on their prices. I though it was only $10 but it's actually $20. I hope the tour gets better and more family friendly as the years go by. read more

Shoddy customer care. In from Oregon, really interested in this rare Art Deco building and the view from the rooftop bar. Carefully read the website. First come, first serve. Understood. Limited capacity. Understood. Website says open till 10:00 PM. What they don't tell you is the doors close at 9:00 PM. So we arrive before 9:00. Ring the bell, host lets us in but THEN a couple who was on the waiting list arrived so the host makes us go back outside, closes the door and we are left standing on the sidewalk feeling like idiots. The host made NO effort to accommodate us or offer any compromise. Our trip to the Empire State Building in New York was slick, smooth and professional. An absolute hidden gem. This tower is definitely more worthwhile than the Space Needle. I'll admit I've been to Seattle at the Space Needle multiple times which may relate to why I was underwhelmed, but I'm sure the other reviews can better my point. For $20 (15 with AAA) versus the space needle's 27, you get to take the time machine back to 1914 and learn everything about this museum. We took the metro here which is right next to the building, but there's a lot across the street too. The intro of the tower asks you to pick a character (one of eight) who were actual people who worked in the tower including a rumrunner, lawyer and the architect of the building. You walk into hallways and rooms with many "then and now" features. I also love how they let you sign the wall! 34 stories up in the 1920s elevator takes you to the observation bar and deck. Bar has slow service but that shouldn't effect the 5 stars for the Tower itself. Overall worth it!! Loved it and loved how hands on it was. Check this place out before it gets popular and had wait times and higher ticket prices! read more

Wow! They really changed the experience at the Smith Tower. This was the spot I used to send visitors to enjoy great 360 views of Seattle without paying the elaborate Space Needle fees. There used to be a nominal fee to get to the top. It was fun because you could only access the top floor with the help of an elevator operator that manually ran the historic Otis elevators. Completed in 1914, the 38-story Smith Tower stands 484 feet. This is the oldest skyscraper in Seattle, and during its time was among the tallest skyscrapers outside New York City. Not only is the view at the top cool from the open-air viewing deck, but the hisoric observatory room also has an amazing handcrafted ornamental wood ceiling, with Asian influences. Now, they have added a museum experience, that takes you through an interactive history of the building, and Seattle's history. The observation tower is still there, but at the top, they have added a prohibition style bar that serves craft cocktails and light bites. It costs $19 for out of state guests and $12 for in-state visitors. They have a AAA discount, so be sure to take advantage of that. Would I still recommend people to come here? The answer is yes. The museum was very cool. At the start of the experience, you select a persona of someone who actually lived and worked in the Smith Tower. You walk through the interactive displays as them and learn more about their story, the building, and Seattle. The interactive displays were fun for any age. They even had a typewriter that you could insert paper and type at. At the top, you learn the end to their story and then enjoy the view, and a drink if you want. Yes, the Smith tower costs more, the historic elevators no longer have operators, but the view is still great, and you get to walk away with a bit more history of the area. Plus, the prohibition-style bar at the top is a great spot for a drink. read more

I may sound a bit biased, but the Smith Tower also happens to be my favorite building in Seattle as well... and I promise that it has nothing to do with Ben Gibbard ;) A regular adult ticket to the Smith Tower observation deck costs $7.50. If you pretend that you're still a student like I do (I always carry my college ID with me in case of emergencies like these), it'll cost you $6. Also, I had gone to the Underground Tour right before coming here, so I received a $1 discount for showing my wristband, which means I ended up paying only $5! WOWZA, WHAT A STEAL!! ^__^ The view from the observation deck is gorgeous--way better than the view from the Space Needle observation deck, in my opinion. Probably because from the Smith Tower, you can see the entire city, as well as the Space Needle peeking through the narrow trenches between all the tall buildings. It's pretty neat to be able to see the Needle at or near eye level. Also, it happened to be a clear and sunny day, so we got an amazing view of Mt. Rainier. I especially loved how the atmosphere felt so peaceful and not chaotic at all (unlike the Space Needle)! The adorable Chinese Room, which you walk through enroute to the observation deck, is furnished with a bunch of gifts from Empress Cixi. One of those gifts is the famous Wishing Chair. Rumor has it that a single woman who sits in the chair will marry within a year. Sooo... ALL THE SINGLE LADIES ALL THE SINGLE LADIES ALL THE SINGLE LADIES ALL THE SINGLE LADIES NOW PUT YOUR HANDS UP If you like him and you want him to put a ring on it, apparently all you gotta do is sit in that chair and wishwishwish oh so very very very hard, and soon enough, you shall be walking down the aisle... A beautiful 360 view of Seattle! It was actually sunny in Seattle and saw a sign for the Smith Tower. Perfect! It was a heck of a lot cheaper to go up the tower instead of the space needle. And no lines! The observation deck opens at 10am so this worked out great for us. You walk into the lobby and see the old elevator doors with elevator operators who still have to close the door for it to move. It's a glass door so you can see each floor as you go up to the 35th floor. The doors open to the Chinese Room where you pay and go out onto the 360 deck. We had such a beautiful day which magnified the gorgeous landscape around us. It also gave you a straight view of the space needle between the skyscrapers. I loved it! A neat little tidbit about the Smith Tower is the 35th floor isn't the top. There is actually a private residence above which was leased 15 years ago. She still has 5 more years on this lease wondering if the new owners of the tower will let her lease again. Very interesting! If you go on the underground tour, just show your wristband for $1 off. I feel like this is less known than the flashy Space Needle, but I truly enjoyed going up to the observation deck here. I love the location (Pioneer area, so peaceful, less tourists, and lots of trees!). The building is soo old fashioned, quaint, and charming. The elevator is one of those old fashioned kind, and the staff were really nice. It was CHEAPER than the space needle ($7.50/PERSON!!), and it gives you an amazing view of the water and most of seattle. What's cool is that its on the other side of the city from the Space Needle, so you get quite a different view! And the best part is, since its less popular, there are barely any people. When I went, I think there was about 15-20 people up there, MAX. so i got to enjoy the view and air peacefully and had basically the entire 4 sides of the deck to walk around freely, without being jostled by the crowd. I walked around outside the deck taking pictures and breathing in the wonderful ocean air. It was amazing :) read more

This is probably the best observation deck I've been to in terms of quality of scenery and value. This building has been around over a century. You learn this coming into this building and you can see the ornate lobby while waiting or the elevator to return to the ground floor. The entrance to the tower is on 2nd Avenue closer to Yesler way than it is to James St right beside the Irish Pub. You have to pay when you arrive at the 35th floor and the prices are no higher than 7.50 per adult and less for seniors and children. Now while this observation deck is not very large (circumference of the skinny part of the tower) it's still 360 degrees all the way around and if anything, it's more convenient being that the skinny part of the tower is less walking all the way around. The 35th floor is sort of a mini museum with a lot of Chinese related art. There are some wall hangings and other furniture some that are very old which you can actually use. The observation deck is through a sliding door and outdoors but you don't have to outside if you don't want to. It's open but closed off by bars so you can't really get a good look unless you go outside. You can easily take photos between the bars to get the shots of the city. If you take a photo between the bars up 2nd Avenue you can see the Space Needle between the buildings on the street. Seriously the view from the Smith Tower is better than the Space Needle. I've only been to the Space Needle almost 15 years ago but the view from Smith Tower is better because you are closer to more buildings, you can see the water and the stadiums so it's a more complete view not to mention it's much more affordable and there a lot less people to have to deal with. read more

The Smith Tower is a great bargain for some honestly beautiful views. The history of the building is impressive in its own right, but coupled with the views, the beauty of the room (and the teak ceilings!), the Smith Tower is definitely worth prioritizing over the Space Needle. The gorgeous hand-cranked elevator is an experience in itself. For only $7.50/person this place is definitely worth the visit. Fun Facts: Smith is of Smith & Wesson and Smith Typewriters, the building was the tallest building in the West for awhile, the elevators are the last hand-cranked elevators in the world, the ceilings are completely made out of teak, the painted guard doors are authentic and have inspired a superstitious Chinese tradition, the Wishing Chair is unlabeled, the ornaments around the room are all authentic imports, and everyone that works there is super informative and nice - especially the woman that greets you when you land on the 35th floor. Whenever I have visitors again I will definitely bring them to The Smith Tower. read more

Wanting to check out the view and skylines of Seattle, we headed to the Smith Tower Observation Deck to get a good look of the city. What breathtaking views we had... all for $7-8. From that high up, we could see the stadium, all the buildings, and even the water. The only downfall was that it was caged up - so getting a nice picture was hard. I get that it's probably for safety measures, but it was just a bit hard to snap nice pictures. On the inside, there was a Wishing Chair and other cool things to look at. It's kind of small so don't assume you'll be spending a lot of time here. To get to the top of the building, we had to take this Titanic-like elevator. Of course, we kept making Titanic references! The guy in the elevator was telling us how he was from Virginia. We asked him what brought him to Seattle, and he proceeded to tell us how he came to visit a lady friend... and after 42 years, he's still here. So sweet! read more

This is cheaper than the Space Needle, but unlike other reviewers, I wouldn't substitute one for the other. I think they are both interesting in different ways. While the Space Needle gives you a sweeping view from a distant height, the Smith Tower offers a more intimate experience with the city. I liked seeing the buildings layered over each other, not having to use binoculars or the zoom on my camera, being able to notice small details in every direction that I just would have missed otherwise. Wanted a view of the city and that is exactly what we got. The customer service once we walked in was great. They made us feel comfortable and we had fun taking a tour and going to the elevator. Went on a Sunday night and they stop taking people by 9pm, it was busy but the security guy was so nice and hooked us up! The elevator ticket is $15/person and the ride isn't very long but your paying for the experience it has a very fancy vintage feel, your transported to the beginning of the century. I loved it. Just your party rides in the elevator up to the observatory so it's "covid safe" in that sense. It's open seating up there, so pick your seat. We got the soba noodles dish with chicken and it's totally shareable (2 people) big portion! It was good. Drinks: Yesler Old Fashion was so smooth highly recommended for those whisky fans out there! Fog cutter was a good girl drink, nice presentation and layered flavors which I liked, their orgeat is their house made almond syrup, yum! The service was okay & rushed since they kept reminding us that the were closing soon. We went out on the railing and the 360 views were fantastic at night! Go on a day that doesn't rain though because puddles of water forms out there and I got my feet all wet with my heels, not fun, but even from the inside you can appreciate the nice view. They also have historical displays explaining the history of Seattle back in the day which I thought was cool to see how it's changed. Super cool place! Can't wait to go back! read more
