Today I needed 1x 8 cedar, and caps for the deck posts. First stop was Lowes, the closest retailer to our house. The boards were so-so, and the caps were not of the quality that I was looking for. Home Depot was second closest. Boards were okay, but again the caps were inferior, and after getting the highly annoying 'bing-bong' security camera warning about 4 times for my highly suspicious act of walking down an isle, I left happily empty handed. Mr. Plywood is a bit far from home, but I decided to venture there anyway. WHAT a difference! The boards I found are far superior in quality, and EXACTLY the same price as the big box stores. The post caps were the brand I was looking for, and $4.00 less per cap than I found them on line. When buying multiples, that $4.00 difference adds up fast! The service was friendly, personal, and they know their stuff. Without so much as one 'bing-bong' warning with a security camera staring at my face, I got what I needed at a reasonable price quickly and efficiently. I HIGHLY recommend Mr. Plywood. It was a waste of time and effort to go anywhere else.

Their lovely showroom and a huge warehouse full of slabs (granite, quartzite, marble, limestone, Neolith, and more) is located on SE 26th. I had the pleasure of taking a guided tour of the facility. Customer service was excellent, you can tell these folks care about what they do and want to see your project succeed. They're honest about the realities of natural stone (like staining and etching) so you can make the right choice. They use a $-$$$$ system to communicate approximate price levels. When choosing natural stone, you really have to see the entire slab - and for many of these stones, people have an emotional reaction. So it makes sense that this facility is a pleasure to visit. It's almost guaranteed you will leave inspired.

We were in yesterday, and he moved some slabs with the forklift, to get one I wanted to see. He brought it out into a space near the door, so that we could see it in natural light. I also really appreciate that the guys running the shop are low pressure, and super honest. I hired a contractor to replace the hardwoods in my craftsman. I loved the floors but some of the areas were beyond repair and I didn't think it was really possible to just replace the damaged areas without it being obvious - these old floors have patina and natural wear, and I was sure they'd been sanded down numerous times. My contractors was sure he could do it, but said to check out the floors at Seaport in case I wanted to do a full replacement. The guys at Seaport were so technical with the specific sanders and stains and finishes, I can see why my contractor sent me here. I ended up going with the repair instead of a full replacement, and I am so thankful that they convinced me. They saved my 50+ year old floors, they look and feel incredible. They looked through photos of my floors and picked out unfinished boards that were not just the same oak type, but even had similar grain patterns for the replacement boards. These guys are true masters of their craft and champions of old-world quality. Craftsmen like guys at Seaport are the secrete magicians that keep the charm alive in old homes in Portland. And if you're in the market for a full replacement, they have samples of all of their floors, finished and unfinished, and a lot (a ton!!) of smaller swatch samples you can take home to see in your space and to show your contractor your stain choices. If you've gone to a big box store and felt some expensive hardwoods, do yourself a favor and stop by Seaport and really feel the quality difference.
