As such, the park access is not ideal, and the greenway trail running by the river is interrupted and requires a detour. The main section of park that is open has notable merits, including a fitness loop, a smaller pedestrian bridge, and athletic fields. I hope that eventually construction on both the bridge and park will finish and give way to a better facility, but it is a pleasant area.

Roanoke River Greenway, in turn, is one of almost a dozen Roanoke Valley Greenways, and extends over many miles of paved trails. The park has several entry points along Wiley Drive SW with plenty of parking spaces to accommodate the locals and visitors here to enjoy what the park has to offer: the skate park is a clever use of bridge bases (pictured); the baseball and basketball courts seem popular and are often nicely crowded; several picnic areas have tables, bench seats, water fountains, and more; and the children's playgrounds are usually filled with little ones. The park features a 2/3 mile walking loop around the perimeter, which I enjoyed very much. On the way around, baseball fields, picnic shelters, playgrounds, a soccer field, tennis courts, picnic areas and tables and a building with restrooms. I saw their disc golf course and a boardwalk area over the Walrond Pond. Lots of parking and the picnic shelters can be reserved with the city. In addition, they have a lot of tennis courts for enthusiasts to practice their shots. They also have several different sized picnic areas and shelters for cookouts with family and friends. My wife and I often enjoy walking the scenic trail in the evening. My only complaint is that the trail is showing a lot of over growth of weeds through the gravel. All in all, Walrond Park is a beautiful place for the local community to enjoy.

The main lot is pretty small but there's a shuttle that will carry you for a different parking lot since the main lot only has about 20 spots and can fill up pretty quick. I came on a Saturday in mid July at 8AM and it only had about 5 spots left. As I was leaving, a group was celebrating someone finishing their leg of the AT, so seems also like a good meet point. Trail was great but a little strenuous because length, but the incline actually wasn't horrible. The heat is real in July, so pack your water and some snacks for energy so you can make it back to the parking lot.

There's only one real parking lot in the middle, and I see people sitting in their cars for unknown reasons or an abandoned car that was just stuck there once. It's not a great vibe. The trail is paved, but not lit, and some of the isolated parts just didn't feel that safe to me in the fading light. To be useful, the trail needs to be cleaned up and livened up.
