If you want to rent the SS Titanic, this is the place for you! We rented a boat from another company earlier in the week and they were great - Captain's Quarters. Nice boats, very professional, very helpful, boats well maintained. Unfortunately, they only had a boat available for one day, so we had to take what we could get for another day. Thus, our experience with Smith Mountain Boat Rentals.
The owner seemed very nice and friendly when we called and he suggested that instead of taking the boat for 8 hours, we could pick it up the night before for a small up charge. Sounded great. When we arrived, we were handed the keys to a boat that had a slick of oil coming out the back and the boat looked ROUGH. Torn seats, loose screws, "battered" is probably the best description. The owner assured us that the problems were cosmetic only, so we drove the boat a short ways across the lake and tied it up. Morning showers kept us off the lake, so around lunchtime, we finally took the boat out to try some waterskiing and go for lunch at a little restaurant around the point. It didn't take long until everyone on the boat started to feel very unsafe. Chunks of rotting wood started breaking off and falling onto the floor, screws the entire length of the boat hull were coming out, the back portion of the boat was becoming swamped with water and we were not happy. I called the owner and left a message saying we felt unsafe in this boat and did he have another, because we were bringing it back?
We dropped everyone off at the house and went to return the boat. The owner argued that there was nothing wrong with the boat and we had it for most of the rental time. I cannot begin to explain the ridiculous nature of the conversation with this guy - "Tell me what's wrong with this boat! It's perfectly fine!" It was ludicrous. He flatly refused to make it right until we threatened to expose him with online reviews. He gave us a check for $175 after arguing with him for almost 30 minutes. If there was a class on how not to handle a business, this guy could teach it.
We feel an obligation to warn others about the safety hazards of renting here. If you are going to Smith Mountain Lake, make your boat reservation as soon as you make your house reservation. Plenty of other reputable places to rent - and very important to note that there are other businesses with very similar names. This one is smithmountainboatrentals.com and is located on Locust Lane. Avoid at all costs, because it's not worth any price. read more
