Absolutely beautiful property with the nicest people and views for days! Bonnie gave us the best tour driving us around to see all the different grape vines, we even got to taste them off the vine! Beautiful grass area set up for our tasting is heaven on earth. The wines are delicious and reasonably priced. The Riesling was outstanding and not sweet. Love this place. GO to this Winery!!!

Smith-Madrone is a family owned and operated winery, tucked out of the way on Spring Mountain. My husband and I called for an appointment to visit at the last minute, and fortunately Debbie was able to confirm we could go at 11am on a Friday. The drive to the winery is circuitous; they have specific directions on their website because gps doesn't find it. We tried with both, and gps was indeed off. The road is very winding so if you have some one who gets carsick, be prepared. It's a gorgeous drive though, and you end up in a rustic facility that looks out over the vibes, the valley, and onto the mountains across in a stunning vista. Our tasting was led by Charlie Smith, one of the brothers-owners-winemakers of Smith Madrone. He was caught a little off guard by our visit, as Debbie hadn't put it (or the one following) on the calendar, but that didn't affect his warm welcome or his enthusiasm for sharing his wines with us. We tasted four wines: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, a Bordeaux blend, and Reisling, in that order. It was a hot day (85 degrees), so Charlie poured us a taste of Chardonnay, and we moseyed outside of the winery to the shade of the awning and looked out over the property. He told us stories of how he and his brother started, about their approach to wine makin, and about the chard itself: crisp, clean and done in French oak with no malo in a French style that was lovely. Next, the estate Cabernet, which he described for us in terms of make-up (blend percentages), and explained the difference between it and the Bordeaux blend, all the while telling more stories. The Cabernet was also delicious; you could definitely tell it was a Spring a Mountain cab, as it was big and bold and dark, but still well balanced. By comparison, the Cooks Flat was more nuanced, delicate, and layers of complex flavors revealed themselves with each taste. Perhaps not surprisingly, since Cooks Flat currently retails for $200/bottle. More surprising, and a testament to his commitment to his wine was that Charlie opened it to share with us! The Reisling, finally, was served slightly chilled and had wonderful acidity that cut through the slight sweetness and created balance on the palate. It was refreshing after the cabs, and we really enjoyed it. The tasting itself didn't cost us anything, and Charlie very kindly signed the two bottles that my husband and I bought to commemorate the trip. We had a great time and would happily go back. Only one minus star for the snafu on scheduling and the crazy directions to get there! ;)

We came across this place after reading that it had one of the top ten views in Napa. We drove through some windy roads reminiscent of driving through mountainous North Carolina, but the visit is well worth it. When we got there, we were greeted by a cute Springer Spaniel and Charlie. Three other pairs of people were there for the tasting. I think that everyone had a great time.Charlie has a good sense of humor. The tour itself was very informative, and we spent quite a bit of time there. Charlie told us the history of the vineyard, explained why the place has the largest olive trees I have ever seen, told us why they make the wine that they do, and much more. Charlie answered all the questions from the "wannabe" wine buff, and I found it educational as I don't know much about wine. The winery is down to earth and not stuffy. The barrel room/tasting room/office was a bit dusty but charming. This place was more my style. The wines were good too. Their riesling is excellent, and I don't even like riesling. It evidently was listed as one of the top ten dry rieslings in the world. And it's the only one in North America. After the tour, we asked Charlie if we could walk around, and he told us about a path that takes us to a nice vista. My boyfriend proposed there, and the view and moment were perfect. To celebrate, we swung back around to the tasting area to buy a bottle of the cooks flat reserve for our special occasion. Charlie said he was tickled-pink, and he gave us a bottle of the cabernet sauvignon as an engagement present. What a sweet gesture. :) This place will always be special to me because of what occurred here, but even if the proposal had not happened here, I would have nothing but high praise for this place. The views are great; the people are great; the wines are great.

Our host, Krista, was so knowledgeable, open to repeat/answer any questions, and is so good at holding conversations! I felt so enlightened and energized because of her absolute good vibes. Krista ended up showing us a variety of different wines, but the most notable wine was the very beginning. My friends and I were limited in our wine knowledge and he admitted that he felt like all wine tastes the same. However, once we took our very first sip, the fruity, buttery notes completely changed our minds. She sets the image about drinking this near a pool and I immediately would get transported to her explanations. It was giving "Remy" from "Ratatouille" moment when you close your eyes and see/feel all the different imagery. Throughout the tour, we are educated on the fact that they have two different addresses because they are at the border of both Sonoma County and Napa! Literally best of both worlds! Afterwards, we tried multiple different wines in their caves and educated on the different notes, how to hold our wine glasses, and the importance of everything. Before this experience, I was completely unaware of what to look for, but now I feel like I have a better understanding of everything. Certain notes I didn't even expect like the peppery taste in one of the wines. It was so cool knowing that these type of caves and winery exists and I feel like our host, Krista, made our experience even BETTER. Thank you Krista for showing us around. This was completely unforgettable and I WILL BE coming again!

Wine: Really enjoyed the wine. Focuses on Bordeaux varietals. This is definitely a fruit forward, new world style, but it's not at all jammy. Almost everything is estate grown. Service: This really made our experience. Brittney was our host and she was warm, very knowledgeable, and generous. It really feels like the people here love working here which is very different from a lot of other Napa/Sonoma tasting experiences. This is a really popular winery so it does feel a bit commercial (as a guest, you are kind of on a time limit) but this place really blends the best of corporate efficiency + family run business/down to earth people. Highly recommend.

You could tell he genuinely enjoys what he does, and he kept the tour interesting the entire time. The castle itself is stunning and the whole experience felt really unique. The wine tastings were all delicious and added a lot to the visit. The only downside was unfortunately someone in our tour group. One woman made sure everyone knew she was a member and kept mentioning how she had already seen the castle too many times and was bored of it, saying she only came to bring her family for a birthday. It kind of disrupted the experience for the rest of us. When we got to the torture chamber she also started making some really inappropriate remarks, which was a bit uncomfortable for the group. Aside from that situation, we still had a great time and really enjoyed the tour and tastings. Overall it was a memorable experience and definitely worth visiting if you're in Napa. 5 stars for Eli!!

Off the beaten path!…read more This is by far the most beautiful winery I've attended and seen thus far from all the Yelp Flight Club events teamed with CellarPass. It is a little bit hard to find and the road to this winery is long, narrow, and windy. First of all, wine tasting is by appointment only and parking is limited. The signs are not very big and obvious so you need to look carefully and follow the signs. Once you arrive at this vineyard, though, you will see why the drive was all worth it. The front of the winery displays an American flag. That should give you a hint of the theme of this family winery. The winery itself is literally a hidden gem away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We entered through the side and it led us to the patio. What an impressive setting with patriotic decor throughout and overlooking the vineyard and the lake. Sit and relax in the tasting room or out in the patio while enjoying sips of their Cabs and signature wines. During cold season guests can enjoy their wine by the warmth of fireplace. We sampled the Rose and Estate Cab. There is a specially designed bottle that was produced in honor of 9/11. Do ask one of the hosts, Donna or Tom, to enlighten you with the story of how it came to be. Whether you're enjoying their fine wine or a game of bocce ball on their bocce court visitors will surely find this family vineyard peaceful and inviting. While working in St. Helena, I could never find an opening in a reservation, so here was a great opportunity now that all of us are retired. Our friends live in Clear Lake while we live in Vallejo, so this is a central place to meet. It was the best decision I made because every year for the past several anniversaries, we've gone to Cache Creek to C2. Their food and service is excellent because my husband enjoys poker, but I thought a change of scenery would be nice. And it was! Firstly, it was very kind of the staff to present us with a greeting card signed by everyone -- how sweet and thoughtful! We will cherish that! Secondly, we were very impressed with how the food/wine was locally sourced. It was incredible to hear the story about Custom, the Bull, and taste the difference between the Highland beef compared to Angus. Our waitress was "Erica S." She was engaging, personable, and very informative. My husband and I would definitely like to return to return to experience the dinner menu! From the beginning, there seemed to be constant miscommunication between staff. We specifically booked an outdoor reservation and were seated inside instead. While mistakes happen, it set the tone for the rest of the evening. The bigger issue involved the wine and corkage fee. We purchased a bottle directly from the market associated with the restaurant and were told by the employee there that the corkage fee would be waived if we bought their wine. When we sat down, our server Sara told us that was not true and that we would still have to pay the fee. I explained what we had been told, and when she asked if I wanted a manager involved, I said yes. Before the manager even arrived or clarified the situation, the server opened our bottle of wine. In the silence and confusion, I reasonably assumed the fee issue had been resolved. Then the manager came over and told us we would still be charged and implied that nobody at the market would have told us otherwise. The way it was handled made my husband and I feel like we were being accused of making the whole thing up, which was especially upsetting on Mother's Day. At that point, the bottle was already opened, so we were essentially stuck paying the fee regardless. Between being seated incorrectly, the poor communication between employees, and how dismissive the situation felt, the service completely overshadowed what should have been a special meal. The rest of the service we felt ignored and there was minimal effort to accommodate. Great food alone is not enough to justify returning when the hospitality experience feels this frustrating and unprofessional.
