Weather in the 70's, a nice Weather day for her Special Event. 7 of us came Across Country to be a Witness. Smith is a all Woman's College and lodging is more big homes on a city campus than dorms that might look like apartments. More Victorian and Federalist styles. Quite nice, but that makes parking a special effort. Parking enforcement is strict. read more

Smith College is the largest all women's college in the US and one of the best. Located in beautiful Northampton (the Berkeley of the East), Smith is known for its strong academics, strong sense of community, and strong alumni network. You won't find a dorm on campus. Instead, students live in, literally, houses that can accommodate 15-80 women. On Fridays, students gather in the house common room to take part in an afternoon tea. It's a great time to socialize with other students and faculty as well. Smith has a very open, diverse culture, so women who identify as being lesbian, bi, trans, or gender neutral are all welcome. In fact, Smith has it's own Coming Out Day. You can always tell who came out the next day in class because they would be sporting some freshly shaved heads. Minus one star because their financial aid packages suck and no matter how many times I had to explain my situation, my aid was never increased but instead decreased every year. This happened to several other students as well. If you come here and you're from a middle class family, be prepared! :( read more

Having completed my Masters Degree here at Smith College, I enjoy the opportunity to come back from time to time to walk through the campus as well as see exhibits at the museum. This campus is gorgeous and the history behind this Womens Undergrad college is incredible. Some of my favorite spots are the gardens, the pond, as well as the museum and campus center. Having spent countless hours in class and at the library, walking onto campus now feels comforting. If you want to get your learn on, or if you just want to spend time outside, then Smith College is the place to go. Just remember that traffic in Northampton can be chaotic and parking sometimes is a bit tough. read more

Smith is overrated if you enjoy any of the fine arts. I found almost all of the professors to be boring, inaccessible, and unhelpful. My fellow students were, on the majority pompous, entitled posers with no real life experience outside of their home town suburbia. Smithies are supposed to be bold, intelligent leaders, but I found nothing but wimpy chumps full of themselves and their half-assed ideas. One star for having a wonderful food service when I started circa 2002-2003. Ah, the breakfasts. So wonderful. Another star for having horse back riding as a sport. read more

I have now been in the "real world" long enough to know that it doesn't have Mountain Day or Friday afternoon teas or Julia Child Day (it's better and less racist than Thanksgiving, yo). I know that Smith isn't the real world. But Smith gave me four years in a magical land. Even while I was on the edge of a nervous breakdown, juggling several papers due in a few hours, it still felt magical. Okay, at the time, it didn't really but if I had the chance to do it all again, I wouldn't blink before I took it. Yes, some of my professors were less than amazing, but most of them were just exemplary teachers and human beings who awakened in me so many passions I didn't know I had. The open curriculum was something I didn't really consider when I was deciding on a college but once I was there, it made all the difference. There's no "Rocks for Jocks" - every student in nearly every class is there on their own volition. The Art Museum is a must see for any visitor to the Happy Valley. I am still planning return visits to the Sophia Smith Collection - the most incredible space for women's history and literature that I have ever been in. The house community is something completely unique to Smith and it brings together students from every walk of campus life. Of course, the campus is full of New England beauty and charm but hey, I would have loved it even if it all looked like the Campus Center. I know that Smith was nothing like the real world, but after four years surrounded by brilliant and ambitious women, I graduated hoping that day by day, I can make the real world a little more like Smith. read more

I attended the Specialist to Strategist Smith College Executive Education program in June of this year. It was an excellent and well-run program, with a lot of thoughtful and thought-provoking programming from renowned speakers. Having a week of speakers at both the Hotel Northampton and the Campus Center, we got to walk the campus over several times, and even got to try out the lake! They took good care of our physical needs, keeping us well fed, well-directed, and prepared for the elements with umbrellas and scarves. While the food for meals was ok, the snacks were really good - both in quality and variety. I appreciated the healthy and not-so healthy choices, depending on my mood and level of exhaustion. They also scheduled yoga and Zumba classes in the mornings. The program even included time on the lake! Most women tried the canoes and kayaks, but the guy in charge let me and another participant try out sculling since we'd had previous experience on a crew team. It was a nice way to get to experience the area and take a break from the long days in cold meeting rooms with difficult microphones. I highly recommend this program for all my friends and colleagues. read more

Most the students eat at their dorm kitchen. We came here for our my niece graduation. Wish I would have visited her before. I have to say, other than Hampshire (which was my home campus), I LOVED Smith. I took a lot of classes there and enjoyed them all, and Smith had some great professors that I worked with (including one who served on my Division III Committee at Hampshire and helped me graduate -- a shout out to Professor Andrea Hairston!). I knew a lot of Smithies, and they were some of the coolest, open-minded and creative women I've EVER met. Sorry Mt. Holyoke, Smith's got you beat, at least for me. Loved the Smith campus, the boat pond, and the Botanic Garden were both lovely for de-stressing. Neilson and Mendenhall Performing Arts Libraries were my favorite study spots, the Smith College Art Museum was my favorite in the Valley, and I saw one of the BEST concerts of my college career of They Might Be Giants at John M. Greene Hall (GREAT venue!) at Smith. If I were a woman, looking to attend an all women's college, I would DEFINITELY have been a Smithie. NO question about it. I also did a lot of creative collaborative work with Smithies (my set designer for my Division II production at Hampshire was a Smithie) as were several of the actresses in my Division III production at Hampshire. I also collaborated in a lot of my Hampshire classes with Smithies too, they seemed to be the Five College students who enjoyed Hampshire the most. GREAT connection between the two campuses and Smith literally being in Northampton was in my favorite town in the Valley also. It's funny, I never thought of Northampton as being the "Berkeley of the east coast" however, now that I have lived out in the Bay Area for well over a decade, I 1000% agree! Except, Smith and UC Berkeley as academic institutions are VERY different, but both are extremely liberal, open-minded bastions of free thought. Berkeley DEFINITELY has the better weather year-round (and a FAR HIGHER cost of living) than Northampton does though. I have come to love rain in a way I NEVER thought I could have, being from the land of ice and snow as I was. And living in Northampton post-graduation for awhile was great too because I would frequently go and spend time at the Smith College Museum of Art for inspiration. Smith was by far my favorite campus to be on after Hampshire's, so I have ALWAYS heartily recommended to five college students and prospective Hampsters that Smith is the BEST inter-connection within the five colleges to Hampshire (especially in terms of creative student collaboration). Hampsters and Smithies definitely vibe with each other. If I were still in the Valley today, I'd be at Smith right now, getting my second Masters (an MSW) in their School of Social Work, rather than doing it hybrid-style (online and in-class) through CSU. I will ALWAYS have a LOT of love for Smith. read more

I cannot tell you how much I hate Smith College. There is so much that I don't like Smith College, if I were to write it out, I could write a novel. Let's start with the short list of things I do like. Some professors, i mean just SOME, not all, are very nice. They are amazing at teaching, always accessible, and they truely care about their students. Some houses are nice, (again just some), others are very old, with bats and rats living in them. Just because smith thrives on the "tradition" of having houses instead of dorms, doesn't mean they don't have to fix them. Some of houses are still using wall papers from the 80's. We just got wireless this semester, so thats good. But what really gets me is the lighting. Houses have no light, you can't do your homework anyway, because there is no light. The food is average at best, besides when prospective and parents visit, then the food is really good. All smith does is put on a good show when other students or parents are here. They are taking away cereal in my house dining hall next year, since we don't get breakfast, having no cereal could really suck. I mean how much is cereal causing anyways? really? The school is cutting funding here and there. If they could do away with all those counter-initutive diversity talks, maybe we'll have the money to buy cereal. Getting to the thing that gets me the most. The atmosphere, its so idealistic; its borderline stupid. Really I do appreciate students fighting for the rights they believe in, but can they at least do it in a practice way. Can we talk more about somthing thats relevant to the world at large, not just focus on sexual orientations? I am especially mad at the way they deal with diversity. School adminstrations treats diversity as a game of how many people with different skin tones can we collect? I have met alot of "women of colors" at smith, and some of them are just as "white" as every other white person. Students focus way too heavily on grades. Grades is everything to a smithie. Lets just say that grades aren't everything and it should never be. Smith makes you lose sight of the real world. The real world does not work anything like smith. The school adminstration doesn't give a crap about students. I was on their residental life stuff for a while, and our supervisors who was suppose to look after the safety of our students, never gave a shit. E-mails regarding urgent health condition of a student was never returned, questions regarding policies was never returned. The own resident life thing is just there so the college has its ass cover from any lawsuits. The tuition is incredibly high, its gone up to 48K for next year. Though I suspect that's how every other liberal arts college is. Our tuition keeps on going up, but I don't know where the money is going to. The houses are still old, the campus doesn't have any blue safety lights, only one doctor is on call in health service for the entire school, only one housing coordinator is in charge of assigning 2600+ students housing. I am not asking for like a hotel service, i just want to make where our money is going to, why are we so short on staff? Smith college is a really good school, academically, not for everything else, its not. I guess you are rich and have the luxury to talk about morals and rights and read about art history, and not worry about getting a real job after graduation, this is the perfect school. read more

All joking aside, it's a great school and has a great campus and everyone is very nice.
