My 16 year old son and I came on a hot day in August 2022 for the 10:00am information session and 11:15am campus tour. This is a top-notch small liberal arts college (about 1,800 students come from 49 states and other countries) with a gorgeous campus. The hilltop view of the Connecticut River in the distance is worth the visit! The campus has a nice mix of architectural styles with a world-class natural history museum. Afterwards, getting lunch in the town of Amherst was convenient - the proximity of restaurants in town within walking distance is a plus for Amherst students. Amherst still requires KN95 mask wearing for indoor building access and requires you to show your COVID-19 vaccination card. If you don't like this policy, that may be a sign that Amherst College is not for you. In any case, it's well worth a stop here if you're looking at small liberal arts colleges. One star is removed for not having a short restroom break during the tour. Also, the information session auditorium was difficult to find and about a 10 minute walk from the admissions office. read more

What a beautiful campus!!! This is rated among the top three liberal arts college on the national level! This College was a lot better than I expected.I went to an information session and campus tour to learn about the college for my daughter. What I learned was that they have an open curriculum and they focus on undergraduate studies and accept a student body of 1800. Their financial aid is based not on a merit system it's based on finances. The campus has newly built science center and they have the most incredible Beniski Natural Sciencecience museum!!! I didn't have a chance to go ahead and look throughout the entire museum but this is definitely on my list to come backbut they had a huge skeleton of a mammoth and that already made me fall in love with this museum. They had a great student center which house a lot of movie nights and other cool things on campus. There ihave one dedicated food Hall of the Valentine because the person who cooks there is named Valentine... I think. And they have an amazing athletic center which a humongous track and field which is the state of the yard. They have new dorms for upperclassmen and the underclassmen resides in the center square.I definitely think it's worth visiting they also have arts museum to which I didn't have a chance to look at but again I'm on my list to visit. My grandson Timmy goes to school here. As a BU Alum, no other school can compare to my alma mater but especially not this one. He seems to like it. Small campus. His mom told me that he has been having a hard time making friends so it doesn't seem like they have a good social scene. I went to visit once this fall and let me say, it was interesting. As I was staying the weekend in a local lodge, my little Timtim took me out for drinks! We ended up at a local dive bar called AE that was right across from my motel and it proved that Amherst really is a College town. Young people everywhere!!! Made me feel youthful again!!!!! I didn't attend Amherst, I just want to start off by saying that. I went to Hampshire College (Amherst students called it the "freaky college down the road") and preferred academic freedom and narrative evaluations to grades. I didn't care, I chose my school, they didn't choose it for me. I took classes at Amherst for about a year and a half and participated in class as much as I could (Amherst professors and other Amherst students would get annoyed with myself and the other Hampshire students in classes for asking so many questions and clarifying points and leading discussions), although, at Amherst, I found the students were VERY competitive and pretentious, to the point of being REALLY snarky to Five-College students, especially Hampshire students. I also found Amherst (the college, not the town or the university) to be socially constipated, elitist and preppy beyond belief, but that's why I didn't go there. I didn't let that all bother me, although I will say I enjoyed my off-campus classes MUCH more at UMass, Smith & Mt. Holyoke in comparison. I worked harder in my Amherst classes more for those B's I got, than any of the other off-campus classes I took. I guess that's why I give Amherst three stars because I proved to myself that had I gotten into school there (at that time Amherst was ranked the #1 LAC in the US by News and World Report), I would have been able to hack it amongst the "academic elite." I loved escaping back to Hampshire after class (however, since two out of the three Amherst classes I took ended later in the early evening) I would sometimes eat dinner there for practical reasons. Valentine was MUCH better than the Hampshire Dining Commons, I have to admit (in terms of both food variety and quality), but the Hampshire Dining Commons had more bucolic rural and woodsy views from its dining rooms. Although I envied Amherst College students most for having downtown Amherst right there, adjacent to campus. Hampshire's campus is a bit more isolated (but hey, we have a FARM!). Looking back on it all now, I actually enjoyed taking classes and studying at Amherst, because it basically was a necessary experience I guess I was meant to have, and it gave me more insight and drive into my own creative and academic work at Hampshire. I NEVER would have been able to feel comfortable socially at Amherst, as I did at Hampshire, but maybe that's why it was good for me to take classes there and interact with Amherst students and the faculty because it was "outside" my comfort zone. The consortium is a GREAT resource in many ways (course exchange, combined Library resources, academic programs, certificate programs, social and cultural events), and although I didn't take any more classes at Amherst past Spring semester of my second year, I made friends with a couple of cool and artistic Amherst students, and they helped me collaborate on a multimedia performance piece during my Div II at Hampshire. We even performed it at Amherst (and the other three campuses as well), since it had been an outgrowth of one of my Amherst classes (and I got a B+ in that class!), so I can't really completely slough off the experience overall that I had at Amherst.
