Normally when I go on vacation, I love to venture off the beaten path and find hidden gems,…read moreespecially in new cities. I was recently on an Alaskan cruise, so those opportunities were much rarer, since there are time restrictions on port days. Thankfully, my wife & I wandered here, looking for a place to sit and a drink after a long hike wandering around Juneau. While it was summer in Alaskan and still a little chilly, we were both pretty warm from a strenuous hike. Not knowing the city well, we were away from the tourist crowd. But I saw this place was open, so we walked in and started talking to Izzy, the shop owner. As the menu is quite large, we chatted her up while pondering our choices. Eventually, I chose a Hazelnut Fudge Swirl milkshake while my wife ordered the Vanilla Peanut Butter Swirl milkshake (go big or go home!). As Izzy was the only one working at the moment, she made our drinks one by one. But we weren't in a hurry, so we asked her questions about the shop and life in Juneau. She gave us some additional tips for this trip. The drinks were so good! Izzy made them very thick, and the ice cream was delicious! If it wasn't for our limited port time, we would have come back later in the evening for a 2nd round. With other customers coming in, we sat inside and read while drinking our milkshakes. If I was a local, this would be my (non-alcoholic) hangout. Hopefully in a future Alaskan trip, I'll come in again and enjoy more sweet treats!

The location is small and friendly, just a few steps away from the popular tourist area of Juneau. The locals already know this place and tourists should look it over for a great treat.

We saw all the shops in Anchorage, Skagway, and Juneau selling products from Barnacle Foods so when…read morewe came across this little stand next to the Alaska T-Shirt place, we had to stop in. They also offer plenty of samples! The two most interesting items I tried: Spruce Tip Shortbread - This tastes like shortbread. I'm not sure what the spruce tip part is supposed to taste but I didn't really get anything special here. Kelp Pickles - Woah, super interesting. It's pickled like a... well, pickle, with the included vinegar acidity, but is cut cross section wise along the stem, resulting in a hollow ring that's gives kind of a firm but slimy crunch. Since the ring is on the thicker side, it's somewhat different texture as compared to wakame or other seaweed. I ended up purchasing a jar of their Kelp Chili Crisp for $15, which adds seaweed umami to a base of crunchy chili crisp. It's fragrant and sweet with just the right amount of heat, perfect on rice, as a dip (I used it for dumplings), or for cooking. The Barnacle Foods Outpost is an excellent place to pick up some uniquely Alaskan made food. As a bonus, it's cheaper than all the gift shops and grocery stores around since it's the company outlet store! I had already purchased a bunch of gifts earlier in the week, otherwise I would have bought more!

The ingredients all taste good and fresh. I end up getting it all- eggs, cheese, potatoes, bacon, jasmine rice, black beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, all the good stuff. They even have fancy eggs and fancy potatoes (made with peppers). Everything is prepared next to the register behind glass, so you can watch them prepare it. I love coming here or the valley Breeze-In for their soups as well. The chicken tortilla is my favorite by far. The donuts are pretty good too, and I hear so are the bagels. There is also a frozen coffee machine with different syrup flavors, it tastes like a Frappuccino and it is not overly sweet like I assumed it would be. I also tried the breakfast crunch wrap but personally I wasn't a big fan. It was okay, but the ingredients were clumped in one spot and the nacho cheese made it sticky, texture-wise. I definitely prefer the burrito. I come here with my coworker about once a week, and the staff is nice and generally patient with everyone. One time we asked what the lunch special was and it was halibut tacos that were absolutely delicious. But they only do lunch in the late morning-afternoon. They stop breakfast around 10:30AMish. I have tried the California steak burrito for lunch, but was not a fan. The steak was dry and tough. If you go, stick to the breakfast!

Tucked away amongst the trees, this place felt like it was a true representation of an Alaskan convenience store. The dudes working in there had huge beards and were burly, they looked exactly like what you'd think Alaskan mountain men would look like, which was pretty cool. They were friendly but a little intimidating! The inside of this store is old and rundown, with inventory boxes lying about and stuff crammed everywhere! Flyers about local events, fundraisers, and hunting and fishing restrictions were plastered all over the front windows. The prices, as you'd expect due to the remote location, are very high. I can't remember what I paid for a soda, but it was a lot. It was cold and didn't have an expired "use by" date, so I consider that a win. The place felt a little sketchy, and I would avoid it at nighttime or maybe if you are a female traveling alone. I didn't feel unsafe, but it made me a little uneasy shopping here based on the clientele hanging around outside. I know that sounds snobby, but I'm just trying to be honest. Duck Creek Market isn't fancy, but it's sort of a place I'd recommend if you want to soak up some truly local culture. Stopping is is an adventure in itself!
