Unfortunately I find myself, again, having to deal with the fallout of ignorant unprofessional employees. It's such a shame because I find Dr Alkass to be an excellent dentist. However I'm afraid that I'm going to be, again, in the market for a new one. I was waiting in the waiting area for my cleaning when I overheard the "girls" at the front desk talking about an incident that occurred two nights prior where a young female police officer and her partner were shot. (The young female officer lost her life and the young male officer is in critical condition.) one of the females who I will identify as "the hygienist" says, I can't wait to see what really happened, I bet they were really aggressive and that's why they got shot. You know male police officers are so aggressive" not females, but males. I bet they deserved it because it doesn't just happen." Now I don't know about you but if I'm a police officer and my coworker was just shot to death. I don't want to hear your ignorant opinion about a job you know nothing about. There's enough negativity and ignorance about policing, I certainly don't need to hear it at my dentist's office. The problem nowadays is that people don't know enough about being professional in a work environment and they certainly don't know when to keep their mouths shut. I would love for this woman to lose her job over the fact that she just lost a client but that probably won't happen. It really is a shame because I really do like Dr Alkass but I'm not going to give my business to a place I consider a hostile environment. UPDATE: Dr Alkass called shortly after this happened and was absolutely horrified about the situation. It turns out that the woman who was going to be cleaning my teeth was a temp who was taking the place of the excellent regular hygienist that they have named Milena. He assured me that the woman I encountered would not be back working at his business. We talked about the fact that in a professional environment there's just no place for that. Thank You Dr Alkass. I really appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedule to give me a call as the last thing I wanted to do was leave your practice because you're so good at what you do. read more

I was a patient here about 5 years ago for a few years. Dr.Alkass did a few root canals and crowns for me and I never had any complaints about the work done. The reason I left was because the equipment he used is outdated. For example, he didn't have the machine that allows you to do the crown in just one visit so I had to get it done in 2 and get the impression etc. That's why I am giving 4 stars. I am now at the point that I have started to need implants so I looked at his website and it doesn't look like anything has changed. Otherwise, I would consider going back here as he is a really good dentist. But, I don't think he has comparable equipment to where I am going now and that's important, especially when it comes to implants. read more

I am leaving a poor review after terrible customer service from the front desk staff today. I have been a patient for several years and the dentist has always been very personable and done a thorough job, however his front desk staff have left a lot to be desired over the years and today they were the absolute worst. I made two appts weeks ago for my husband, he had one before the Christmas holiday and mine was today. They have called my phone and not left messages apparently. I didn't realize my mailbox was full and didn't realize it was them calling because they are not saved as a number in my phone. (My phone doesn't alert me to when my mailbox is full, and I clearly need to clean it out.) Today, I get a text message (photo attached) saying I need to confirm my appt and they've been trying to reach me. Then 30mins later get a text saying they canceled my appt because I did not confirm?! I made the appt. it was in my calendar. I intended to come! I called approximately 45 mins after the text message was sent and they did not apologize on g to be phone and instead explained that "several patients don't confirm their appts and then don't show up for their appts. so we canceled yours." I am not those patients- I show up for my appts! For years!! Thanks so much for canceling an appt. that I made bc you assumed I would not show up FOR AN APPOINTMENT I MADE WEEKS AGO. The front desk staff then told my husband who called after and said they needed to use the appt for another patient so that they can help "as many people use their dental benefits before the end of the year as possible." Which, is what I was trying to do, by getting a cleaning BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR. Judging by the "okay, that's fine" my husband and I were told when saying we're done there, they do not care that they are losing two patients they have had for years. Here are some ideas that would have been more helpful and provided better customer service to a patient in this situation: 1) E-mailing the patient with the email on file, 2) calling the patient's spouse who is a patient with a number on file to confirm (which they've called me to confirm his appts, but I guess that doesn't happen the other way around), 3) texting the patient before the day of their appt. 4) not canceling an appt. the day of the appt. and doing nothing to fix it. Please consider these options before you do this to another patient and lose them too. Customer service skills ARE learned skills and they actually matter to people. The dentist is a very nice man and is good at what he does, so it's incredibly disappointing that his office policy is to cancel on people in this manner. read more

I'm so happy that, thanks to Yelp, I was able to find this practice. Since hitting 40, all of my dental cleanings have been painful. I hadn't had a cleaning for 18 months by the time I came in to Smiles on Elston to discuss my (many) issues with Dr. Alkass. He was such a great listener and very compassionate - he did my cleaning himself over the course of two appointments, providing local anesthesia and using hand instruments. This was the first pain-free (other than the injections) cleaning I've had in several years. Dr. Alkass has an unusually calm and and caring manner that I really appreciated. Mom started experiencing a toothache right before catching a flight to visit me in Chicago. Faced with escalating pain, she consulted a trusted friend who highly recommended Dr. Alin Alkass. Don't ask why she didn't consult her own son for a dentist recommendation; that's still a bit of a sore subject. Being a good, albeit a little hurt, son, I looked up Dr. Alkass on Yelp and was pleased to see that every review he had was five stars. His star average was much better than that of my dentist. He lived up to the positive reviews and even kept his practice open afterhours on a Saturday to see mom. Dr. Alkass has an excellent bedside manner and was very concise on the work that needed to be done. Mom was not thrilled to find out she needed a root canal. It was going to be her first ever. The dentist's confidence and demeanor seemed to put her at ease. The procedure took place a couple of days later and was time consuming. Again Dr. Alkass worked well past the official closing time to make sure that it was properly completed. He had been gentle with mom and afterwards gave me clear instructions on how I should care for the patient. Stella at the front desk was very friendly and efficient in explaining the costs and handling reminders via e-mail and phone. I also appreciated her follow up phone calls to find out how mom was doing. It's been a week since mom's last visit to Dr. Alkass. I've been a patient of Smiles on Elston for more years than I can remember, so I was concerned when Dr. Malitz retired and Dr. Alkass took over. Knowing that Mae and Lorraine, the best Dental Tech and Hygienist ever, were staying did relieve my concerns a little, but they were all put to rest today Over the weekend I broke a tooth and when I called this morning and explained the situation, Stella fit me in for an afternoon appointment. I can't say enough great things about my experiences at Smiles on Elston, Dr. Alkass and his awesome staff. Everyone in the office is so nice, from the Dr. himself, to Mae, his awesome dental assistant and Stella, his office assistant. They all truly care about your well being and comfort, pre-visit, during your visit and even after you've left! I woke up in severe pain yesterday morning and called the office before they opened to see if I could get in asap. Dr. Alkass call me back personally and fit me right in same day. Dr. Alkass will do anything to save your tooth! Initially he tried replacing an existing filling hoping that was the cause of my discomfort. The procedure, as with others I've had there was painless and quick. However about two hours later after the novocaine wore off I was still in pain. I called right back and he saw me again, same day! Unfortunately I had to have a root canal, but again, the experience was truly exceptional. It was over before I knew it! Dr Alkass and his caring assistants always make sure you are comfortable, even for the most anxious patient like me. They check in with you often during the procedure and it puts you at ease. I am so thankful he was able to solve my pain issue in one day. I couldn't imagine having to have gone through the weekend with the pain I was in. I was so relieved when the novocaine wore off a second time to find the pain was gone. I thought I would lose the tooth for sure but Dr. Alkass was able to save it with a root canal and a crown. He reassured me the entire time and gave me all the information I needed to understand what was going on and what my options were. Dr. Alkass was able to see me right away. He was great. He refilled a difficult cavity. It was partially under the gum line, and two small pieces of the nerve were exposed. Another dentist had advised me to have it pulled. He was able to insulate the nerve and fill it. It was quick and painless. Dr. Alkass was personable and empathetic. Sorry I didn't write this review earlier. When I was kid I had an accident that left my mouth mangelled. The dentists that I visited did a patch job here and there like McGyver. They were very mean and condescending. I was afraid of dentists and didn't trust them. As an adult many things contributed to my bad teeth including low income, lack of insurance, episodes of homelessness and episodes of poor nutrition. I feel very lucky to have found Smiles on Elston. Dr. Alkass was never demeaning, condescending, or confrontational about the condition of my teeth. (Believe me, I waited to hear it and if it had occurred I probably would never return). With his infinite wisdom, he did just the opposite. He reviewed my situation and came with a game plan (treatment plan). He explained every step to me and explained why this method is the best method for me. We worked his plan together for the past year. I no longer have missing teeth. I feel comfortable smiling for a picture. I interact with others more. I am more confident now. Let me say that he also has a stellar support staff. Stella, Kim and the other assistants will work with you making appointments. I've never had any trouble with billing or figuring out insurance coverage. Lorraine is an incredible hygienist. His dental assistants are always pleasant and welcoming. It is always refreshing to be in the presence of people who love what they are doing and are committed to it.
