My family has been going to the SmileZone for about 10 years now. The services for my children are beyond excellent and I always trust Dr. Andrew's advice for both of my sons' teeth, especially for orthodontics as my oldest son has had a very bad bite since he was young. My boys love going to the dentist because the dental team tries to make it as pleasant and painfree as possible (my oldest son had to get a cavity filled and they didn't even use anesthetics on him in order to fill the hole). They even look forward to their appointments because they get to wear "cool" sunglasses, read fun books in the dental office, and get their incentive toys from the "treasure box".
On the plus side, and why we keep coming back here is the office is very conveniently located, close to the U of A and across the street from where I used to live, it's beautifully renovated, with a large contemporary washroom and waiting room, state of the art dental facilities and x-ray equipment (apparently they even used to have tv monitors for patients, but it would slow the equipment down), plus they offer "complimentary" gourmet coffee and bottles of water. The appointment services are pretty good as they have an online booking system and also give you 2 or 3 reminder calls about any upcoming appointments to make sure you don't miss them (because they'll charge you $250 if you don't cancel within 48 hours of your appointment!) It's also a one-stop shop for my family's dental needs and the front office staff try to ensure that me and my family are booked on the same day, if possible, for our own convenience.
On the minus side, the biggest complaint I've had with their treatment services is they never seem to be proactive enough with their treatments and I end up paying for it (literally and figuratively) in the end - lucky for me, I have pretty good coverage. For example, just for a 2-minute consultation with the dentist they charge ($65). And, if you ask for a service that might be outside of your insurance coverage dates, the hygienists don't seem to care and don't warn you about it beforehand (even though they have complete access to my last appointments). Also, my son may not have had to have braces if Dr. Andrew prescribed the retainers earlier, instead of waiting for us to ask for them, after advice from a community public health hygienist. I've also gone several times to ask about the possibility of orthodontics but the assistant specialist has limited hours (which I wasn't made aware of) so I have had to play telephone tag with her. After I got cleared for my orthodontics, I've also had to go back and forth with my insurance and the dental office, neither of them knowing who was accountable for initiating the procedures (this is now over a period of months). Finally, after my recent general cleaning appointment (by the way, I have always had painful scaling done there, but they blame that on me not flossing regularly) I reminded the covering dentist of the clicking in my jaw, after which he referred me to a TMJ specialist. I have had this clicking for 2 years now and when I first showed Dr. Andrew, he said I just needed to take glucosamine (which didn't seem to do anything). Now Dr. Andrew said I'm not allowed to start any orthodontic treatments until I see the TMJ specialist, who charges $300 up front. ARGH!!
Not only that, but when I went to get whitening done there, they charged me $500 for the procedures PLUS the take-home whitening trays. When I asked why it was so expensive, they said it was for taking impressions to make the trays. When I went back, I was told they would only charge me $300 because I already had trays made previously. When I was about to confirm my appointment, they said they made a mistake because they changed their whitening system and the trays wouldn't work anymore, so they would have to charge me the full $500 again. I said I wasn't made aware of this and instead of charging me what they initially promised ($300), all they could say was 'Sorry you didn't know that'. Frustrated, I went to another dental office close by (they were VERY accommodating of me, as a new patient, only looking to get whitening done) and they only charged me $300 for the service since they accepted that I still had trays done and didn't even try to upcharge me for anything else.
All I can say is, Dr. Andrew is very nice and extremely knowledgeable, but his staff need to improve on their customer service skills and he needs to be more proactive with his treatments. Great place as a one-stop shop for all of our dental needs, but it's no wonder that he drives a porsche to the office and parks it in the best parking spot available. read more
