Smart Move is not only a SUPER professional moving company in their attitudes, communication, work ethic, fair pricing, and stamina, but we also were so appreciative of their willingness to help us out of a bind! Long story short, we unfortunately were victims of a scam by a different moving company called Mastermind Movers, who left us high and dry on our scheduled moving day (minus our first half deposit!). Needless to say, it was a bit of a traumatic experience! Not to mention we HAD to leave the following day to make it to Texas (where we were moving) in time for my husband's job orientation! So...SUPER stressful!!! We were lucky enough to find Smart Move SLC through a friend, and we were NOT disappointed! Matt was so kind and helpful, and empathetic of our situation, and he managed to help us out by getting his guys out there ASAP the very next day to get all our things moved into storage quickly and professionally, so we had time to plan out how to move our items all the way to Texas! Matt was excellent at communicating and that was such a relief to know that everything was being taken care of! We can't say enough how grateful we are for their professionalism! Matt also brought out an extra guy to help out and get the move done quicker, which was such a blessing! Everything was done quickly, professionally, and with sooo much care! They wrapped everything and did soo much to make sure our items were safe and cared for! My parents and brother were there to help and direct them as to what was leaving and they were all sooo impressed as they saw them pack everything up and with how they cared for our belongings! They even took the time to help to move items from a different storage unit we had to consolidate it with our items in our home so they could all be put into One storage unit to save us some money! Oh, and did I mention, all the guys there came directly from a different moving job, so they were this professional and fast after already having a long day? All because we were in a bind and they were willing to help! We can't say enough how much of a healing balm it was to have such a great experience with Smart Move SLC after such a horrible one with a different moving company! Jason, Fran, Jonny, Brian, and AJ were the guys who were there to move us and also Matt the owner of the company, and we cannot say enough how impressed and appreciative we are of their work! The pricing was MORE than fair, and for the service and work we received, we only wish we had hired them first and saved ourselves the trauma and financial loss of hiring the scam company that seemed like a "good deal" at the time! Unfortunately, this most recent time I was gouged on the hourly rate and charged double for an identical (if not smaller) move that I had them do in January. Update: My husband talked with Brandon in the phone the next day. He promised to check into it and get back with us. No surprise, he never did. What a difference a year, or 3, makes. I gave Smart Move 5 stars then, and chose to use them again this time, despite them being slightly more expensive. We were downsizing from 2400 sqft to a 1200 sqft condo. We had very little furniture and no appliances. The crew arrived on time and seemed physically capable. The loading of the truck went quickly - loaded in about 2 hours. The only plastic wrap used was on a large wicker basket end table. Not our glass gun case, not my piano, not the 1 dresser, not TVs, nor bookcases. The only complaints I had at that point was that we were repeatedly told "that" can't go on the truck. It's too fragile. It will get broken. Isn't that why I hired movers? I understand the cautiousness and can appreciate it to a point. When I questioned why our floor lamp and 4 table lamps could not be taken, I was told - "well if you don't care about them, we can put them on" and finally "you'll have to take off the lamp shades", which we did. The lamps were then neither secured nor wrapped in the truck. We have a 12 year old son with autism who struggles with change and anxiety. He overheard one worker say to the other that his roosmelled like sweat and Cheeto dust. I went ahead to the condo while my husband stayed behind to bring the remaining items. This is where the problems started. I suddenly felt like I was working with a bunch of teenagers that needed to be babysat. All semblance of professionalism was gone. The workers were very loud and disruptive, laughing and joking, despite there being many tenants at home on a Sunday at noon. Their cigarette butts littered the sidewalks. It was at this point I approached the truck to hear them laughing and referring to me as "that bitch". When I waited at the truck to direct things to the garage or condo, two of the three workers took forever coming back. When I went to the condo to direct there, they wouldn't bring anything up from the truck for extended minutes at a time. I estimate the group took 3 or 4 - 15 minute breaks in the 3 hours it took to unload. I can understand the need for frequent breaks for such difficult work, but not when no work was being done, and I'm paying by the hour. Despite there being three dollies, only one was used. 48" TVs were hoisted sideways overhead, while a box of bows and wrapping paper were placed on a dolly and gently monitored the whole way. At one point, my cedar chest full of items was dumped upside down and sideways on a dolly, unsecured and hauled off. When I mentioned the fragile nature of uhhh... everything, I was told oops, sorry. Another time a nicer foyer table was plopped on a dolly with a cube toy cabinet stacked on top. The next trip was a single barstool. I started feeling like my items were being held hostage. It wasn't until my husband arrived and was able to babysit upstairs and I at the truck that the move finally progressed. There was minor damage to a few items. Nothing that we reported. A wire shelving unit with broken assembly pieces, punctured and torn upholstery on a kitchen chair, joints to a bookcase jarred and separated. We understand risks like this are inherent to moving. We paid too much money to have our belongings disrespected and mistreated. The disrespect to myself and my family were a bonus, I suppose. I have pictures I will try to post. The three young men who came to unload our Trailer did an outstanding job. This was after they had finished another job which took them the better part of the day. They were careful with each and every item that they unloaded and it was amazing to see them work as a team. I would have given them 5 stars but for the lack of communication from them when they were running late and not keeping me updated on their new ETA which changed significantly. Also going to the ding the business owner for not providing them with tools like a hand cart and doily that will help them work more efficiently. Brenden & his cousin showed up 1 1/2 hrs late, hung over. 2 guys, 1 dolly, they took almost 12 hrs to move 1/2 of my stuff out of a 2 bedroom apartment, I had to move the rest on my own. Belongings broken and missing including a key to my front door. Keys just don't fall off or key rings. I can NOT put into words how horrible of an experience it was. My new neighbors came to let me know that my belongings had been going up & down the elevator for at least 45 min. Light in hallway of apt complex broken & dings in wall. Security let me know that the door on the truck was left open the entire time with boxes & furniture left on ground by truck. This is downtown, not the burbs. DO NOT USE!!! If I could give negative stars, I would. I was promised 2 hours for 2 guys. They were late. They got "lost" for an hour at dinner time. They didn't finish the job. They said they would return the next day. My husband made six trips. We waited 3 hours and they never showed. They said they would meet us at 6am they next day. No show. Then they said they weren't coming back at all! The buyers from our home came for their final walk through. My mom, two aunts, and friend came to help me. Eventually, three guys came and got the last four big things. THREE DAYS after I was quoted 2 hours and 2 guys. Our fridge that was bungied closed? The first days guys opened, took out the food, "misplaced" it, and left it rotting somewhere in our place. They stacked things clear to the ceiling! We couldn't access one bathroom. After having used Fast Movers when we moved into the rental house just one year ago and being out $1,000 bucks and discovering items were missing upon our unpacking, it was time to do some research on Yelp and calling around for a new group of helping hands. Smart Move was a good hybrid of price and stellar reviews. We had a team a 3-guys + 1 truck for $130/hour. The guys were friendly and careful with our gear (which is great, except for when you're paying by the hour). Didn't finish our move, didn't replace or repair damages. The movers themselves were great to work with, but they showed up with fewer guys and a smaller truck than they said they had planned for. This resulted in only half our move being done on day one, which put us in a huge bind with getting out of our old house in time for our contract. They were not apologetic and blamed us for "having too much stuff" - however in the bidding process, we were as upfront as possible, even offering to provide photos of the rooms in our house so they can see how much stuff we have (which isn't more stuff per sqft than any other home, and probably slightly less than the average). They also put holes and gashes in our wall and damaged several pieces of furniture which they promised to repair or replace. We got them to reimburse us for one part that broke off our bed, but all the other furniture and holes in our wall were never taken care of. At first they were very responsive, but then they stopped responding so we just gave up. We are repairing the walls ourselves and cutting our losses with an expensive dresser which is now unusable, and several other pieces that got scratched. I have seen other negative comments get replied to by the owner saying that they weren't a real client, and that the reviewer must have their moving companies mixed up. That may be true in some cases, but to pre-empt that, this is Smart Move, owned by Matthew Irvine and Rich Salisbury. read more

So this review is a long time coming, but I'm glad I waited...as the best part is at the end. First of all, we used them twice...both times to pack our moving PODS for our move from Sandy, UT to Denver. The first pod was packed with all the stuff we didn't need around while staging and showing the house. Then after the house sold, we had them come back and pack our 2nd pod with the rest of our stuff. Brandon kept up great communication for both packing jobs, and they showed up right on time both times. And wow, are these guys packing wizards! We underestimated the amount of stuff we had, and they did an amazing job of 'pod Tetris' to make sure everything fit. They wrapped and loaded everything with care, and we all actually had fun (as much fun as you can during a stressful time like this!). Javier ran point both times, and he came to our house about a week earlier to do a walkthough, and to let me know how many moving blankets to get (since we were moving out of state, we couldn't use theirs since we wouldn't be able to return them back), and any other supplies so we were ready. That was super helpful! But I think the best compliment for these guys didn't even come from me. A couple months later, when we finally moved into our house in Colorado, our local moving company told us that they'd NEVER seen such an amazing packing job, and they'd know! They've unpacked hundreds of moving PODS and said this was by far the single best packing job they'd ever seen. And considering the pods were stored for a couple months and then transported out-of-state, that's especially impressive. Not one single item was scratched, not one box was crushed or even dented. The bid to move my 800 sq. ft. home across the valley was $800.00. When they were done they charged me $2,900.00. They loaded the truck and said the truck was full when we still had part of a room to go. When we got to the new house their truck was about 4/5th full. Plenty of room for the rest of the stuff. They stopped for lunch on the way to the new home and didn't tell me so I waited for an hour for them to get here. When they did get here they put things in the wrong places. All of the boxes were clearly marked, (kitchen, bedroom, etc.). They were not careful and broke multiple items. I called for a long-distance quote and spoke with Rich he suggested that Matt (the owner?) should come for a walk-through to quote, of course, I agreed. after 7:00 pm in the evening he texted could he come the next day as they were too busy, I greed OK, even tho I had changed my schedule to meet that day. The next day Matt came and walked through, he said that he would put together a quote and send it over that evening, AGAIN later that evening he texted (another excuse), that he couldn't get a quote because the Penske truck system was not working and he would get his team to work on it Monday morning and get the quote to me, I understand these things can happen and agreed. Around 1:15 pm on Monday I replied to his text reminding him of my email address and that I would be looking forward to hearing from him and hoped that we could work together on my move. Guess what ...... CRICKETS still as I type!! I "did" send him a text this morning Friday 5 days later and told him this was bad customer service and at best, he could have told me that he couldn't work with me rather than promise and then ignore me! If you're like me, you are always slightly skeptical of companies will all 5 star reviews. At the recommendation of a friend and after reading some of the Yelp reviews, I decided to give Smart Move a shot. I found out first hand that they easily earn all five stars and if there were more than five, they'd earn those stars as well. I called Smart Move to help me move out of my condo that I had lived in for close to 14 years. I needed some serious moving guidance because I had no idea how to approach my situation. Due to the scorching hot real estate market in Utah, my 1,100 SF condo sold almost overnight and I was still weeks away from purchasing a new place to live. Not only did I need to get all of my belongings out of my condo, I would need to store everything I owned for an indefinite period of time. After reading some similar scenarios online, I decided that a storage container would be the best solution for me. I did some research and decided to order a container from Pack Rat and then I called Smart Move for expert help filling the container. The container was scheduled to arrive on a Friday and the move was scheduled for the following Monday so I would have the weekend to prepare everything. When the container arrived, it was evident that all of my stuff would no way fit inside. My condo was in a gated community which was very tight on parking space without the container. I had to scramble to get the empty container picked up and come up with a new plan prior to Monday. This was a big curve ball that I threw at Smart Move right off the bat. I called Brandon up and told him my situation. He was able to somehow get me a truck reserved for Saturday afternoon (as in the next day). So instead of three guys coming to move my stuff into a container, I needed three guys and a truck and I still had no idea where they were going to take everything. Somehow, I convinced Pack Rat to pick up the container same day as opposed to Monday afternoon which was crucial as there is no way the truck would have fit with the empty container in the way. I was able to secure a large indoor storage unit just a few blocks away which ended up being perfect. Saturday afternoon came and Joey and Chris showed up on time with a truck. They explained that a third man would not be available due to the pivoted schedule and a horrendous piano move that was occurring the same day. Admittedly, I didn't think these two gentleman would be able to pull it off for me. I can't begin to tell you how wrong I was. These two guys got to work quickly explaining in detail their system of wrapping, protecting, and loading everything. They took time (but worked very fast) to make sure all my furniture was covered in blankets and wrapped tightly in plastic. They hauled everything down three flights of stairs. My furniture is all big and very heavy. I was impressed with their professionalism and overall strength. Joey in particular was very professional and his integrity is enviable. Joey is very good at what he does and he seems to genuinely enjoy it. It took these two guys about 5 hours start to finish. They only took one quick break to eat some Crown Burger that we bought for them as the least we could do to show our appreciation for the challenges they faced. They finished loading the storage unit at about 10:30 Monday night. These guys hustled and worked very hard the entire time. At the end of the night we gave them each a little cash tip and paid with a credit card (total about $700). A few weeks later I was finally ready to move into a house that I had purchased. I called Brandon and told him I had to have Joey help me again. Brandon said they would be at my storage unit at 1:00 PM Monday. I got a call from Joey at 10:00 AM Monday morning letting me know that they were at the storage unit ready to go. Slight miscommunication in timing, but it ended up working out much better. Joey, Jason, and Breeze got to work fast unloading my storage units with the same precision as before. This time I had another curve ball waiting at the house. The previous owners had stuck me with a giant piece of furniture in the master bedroom. This piece was so large and so heavy I wasn't sure if it would come out of where it was without being cut in half. These three guys somehow made it happen with less than 1/8" clearance and weight easily heavier than a Volkswagen. This crew more than earned their burgers and a tip. Moving from my storage unit into the house took about 9 and a half hours (total about $1,300). Large, heavy furniture and tight spaces made the work very technical. I'm convinced that there is no other crew of three guys that could make this move as smooth as it was. I'm very grateful to Smart Move and the guys that worked so hard helping me through a complicated and stressful moving process. I will recommend Smart Move to anyone who will listen. Do yourself a favor and ask Brandon to schedule Joey's crew to handle your move. read more

2 stars for the quick responses I got from Brandon. Disappointing service because I was told Lyle and Cody would come by to help me move. I had read very good reviews about them. Instead I had two other guys who weren't very professional. They weren't familiar with using the tools to assemble and disassemble. One of them wasted almost 15-20 minutes on the phone call and wasn't even interested to help move. I was on a clock and tight budget so was hoping to move in 2 hours, which was the estimate given to me by Brandon and others. It would've taken lesser time and would've been more efficient if the 2 guys who showed up were showing interest on helping me move than on their cell phones and small talk. They wouldn't even help me put up some holes in the wall to hand a frame after moving in, I wanted that because I didn't have tools myself. I would go for Smart Move only if Cody and Lyle were to help move. I have no words for Brandon's effort in making this experience right! He immediately responded to my concern and willingly reimbursed me for the entire move. This is not something you see when things take a wrong turn! We had a 4 man crew for our move from Herriman to South Jordan, the showed up a little late for a 9 AM start time but communicated with a phone call ahead of time letting us know that they were running behind (good communication). The 4 guys got right to work and worked very hard through the entire process only taking one 15 minute break during the 5 hour move. I'm sorry I don't remember the names of the men that were involved but it was an extremely hard working crew, they took care to wrap items in moving blankets and took great care of our belongings.
