This place keeps getting more and more crowded. I guess the word is out! The parking lot is always jammed up on the weekend now. :-( So now I've been going weekly for a while now, and am getting the hang of the store layout and know where things are. I've gotten produce (ok quality, good prices) and meat there (quality seems good, but you often have to buy a larger quantity). Milk is good and hasn't soured on me before the sell-by date. I have stopped shopping at Safeway completely now that S&F has improved, so that's a plus. read more

The Good: Great grocery store, perfect location for the Cambrian area, good deals on wines, helpful people. Special shout out to Martin and Ashley for helping us with a special order for a party. The bad: gets crowded on Sunday mid mornings to early afternoons... BUSY! But again, all supermarkets get, I guess. The ugly: I can't get over the small of cockroaches. Hate the name Smart & Final. Avoided the place for years because I assumed it was a discount clothing store (look smart, final price?). Finally figured out that it was a bulk grocery store recently. The place is basically what happens when you cross a discount grocery store with Costco. If you are shopping for a party or have a big family then this place is worth checking out. They carry the kid size 1/2 water bottles which is hard to find at a good price elsewhere. They have lots of bulk picnic supplies. The only thing they are really lacking is any gourmet food or style. read more

I like this place for a lot of things. But there is alway that smart A. Employee that makes you hate going to this place. Produce guy Shawn the rudest and unprofessional employee I ever seen. Seeing him very rude with other customers but today it was my turn. This guy feels like he doesn't need to work or he is doing smart and final a favor by showing up to work. I feel bad for his direct manager and the store manager as well. Today he was yelling at me as if I went to his house and actually I went to talk to the store manager but he was with a corporate manager on the floor so i didn't want to embarrass him since he is a nice guy. Now I like these guys better than cos**o for a few simple reasons; one is you don't need to buy huge containers of things to get good pricing and two they have better selection. A male employee tried to physically block me coming in, because it was 5min before closing. I had to get uncomfortably close to him, but I managed to get in around him. Then a manager tried to tell me it was 10 (it was 9:55) so I showed her the time, which just made her angrier. I said I just needed to use the bathroom real quick and she told me to hurry. There was such vitriol and animosity, when I saw her at the door when I was leaving (at 10 like I promised), I apologized and said I didn't mean for there to be any anger, I love this store and come here all the time. To which she promptly answered, "You come here all the time, then you know we close at 9:55 so I can close out the registers by 10." To which I said "Yeah but I wasn't buying anything, I just needed to use the bathroom." She knew I was right and she was wrong so she just mumbled something else angrily before making a show of locking the door right behind me. Classy manager! read more

Smart and Final has a good variety and fresh produce. HOWEVER- I will not being going back because there are not enough cashiers to ring customers at a reasonable time. I went in the afternoon (couple weeks ago) there was only ONE register open with about 10 people with full carts, they then opened up another register. I will not be coming back to shop here because the WAIT TIME to get rung up is excessive- I would say I waited more than half an hour. There were many customers who were only going to purchase a couple of items that decided to leave. This store needs to have more coverage and anticipate busy hours! I hope the manager can add in more cashiers, otherwise you will continue to lose business. read more

I don't know why I don't come here more often. I live fairly close. They always seem to be well stocked and prices are often pretty good compared to other stores. Employees are friendly and they are following all the protocols for Covid. Will have to remember to come back. read more

This isn't the smart and final I use to go to when I was younger. It use to be a "mini-costco" type store now its more like a safeway. Some aisles do provide "family size" items still. They have great prices on eggs, bread you know the necessities. Even frozen food products have fair prices too. read more

Used their online shopping which was a mistake ! Ordered enough for free delivery which is serviced through Instacart . Order was short, which didn't qualify for free delivery. Grace was working the 10 item express lane today. She allowed 3 customers ahead of me 20 plus items. I have been shopping at S & F for 15 years. I have been recommending them and telling folks how much I like them. Since the Corona Covid 19 thing, I will never shop there again. The one on Watt ave in Sacramento makes everyone stand in one long line no matter if you have 2 items or 60. They may have 2 or 3 check stands open, but they all go through that one line.You could be in line for 30+minutes easily. They don't have anything I want that bad. Today was the 3rd time I tried and it will be the last. Same stupid setup.I wish people would stop shopping there so they would get the hint and fix this mess.. I will miss them. read more

Well if you answered yes to any or all of the above, you should be at Smart & Final. I'll admit, I had forgotten we had one in SJ. Boy o boy was I pleasantly surprised! Can we say MAKEOVER? It feels like a Safeway, but cooler, more roomier, and with all the bulk products. It doesn't trump Costco, but it was awesome to get In & Out. Staff was friendly and I appreciated the quick service, even If I had annoying questions. I walked out with most of my ingredients for my party, and even picked up some of my baking ingredients for this holiday season. Tragically, they were out of marshmallow cream, powdered sugar, and fresh basil when I showed up. Luckily, they had everything else, including a 5lb bag of yukon gold for pretty cheap. For years I was hesitant to stop by Smart and Final, because I'm a huge proponent of buying small quantities of fresh unprocessed food. I thought S&F would just be like Costco except crappier. I was wrong, just like Costco, except better. You can get great deals on all kinds of items for maintaining your pantry, without the huge hassle of firstly finding what you want and secondly waiting in line for an hour. I've been purchasing produce here for my upstart catering company, and it's really been helping the bottom line. They also have a little bit of commercial kitchen equipment at a pretty good price. Fart and Smile, you're doing a good service. Also, alcohol...next tailgate or barbecue, get your Funweiser 30 packs here. Good selection of crappy wine and run of the mill liquor. Basically, if you're cooking for a lot of people, it's a good idea to shop here. Great deals with less hassle. read more

Smart & Final is like me....Smart (Obviously) and right to the point. :) These people have turned a Costco into a much more manageable store. Everything here though is geared toward food and the stores/restaurants that serve or sell food. In fact, their tiny, little, half shelf of toiletries should just be removed cus it is silly. (Yes, I am a grown man and I used the word silly. Get over it.) This store has every flavor of soda known to man. You can even get the Mexico versions. The checkout system is efficient and well placed and this store was properly staffed. No long lines and plenty of folks to help you find what you need. Not that you will need it cus the store is laid out brilliantly. Favorite item in this store: The monster can of Jalapeno cheese sauce. Who does not enjoy 5lbs of processed cheese like sauce for their nachos or bedtime fun. Parking lot is a little small and carts and be a little spread out. Other than that. I ALWAYS find everything I am looking for at this Smart & Final ( if they still carry it, that is ) and I especially love shopping here for their selection of chocolate and candy. If I am looking to buy a box of pretty much any candy bar out there that is available in the U.S. they most likely carry it ( and if not I go to Amazon, where they are CERTAIN to carry it ). I went here today just for a few things and was out within 7 minutes. The cashier was a little dim and didn't ring up all my items, so I had to do 2 transactions but everything went off without a hitch. I would recommend Smart & Final as a grocery store that anyone can add to their list of places to purchase both groceries and non perishable items like paper plate, napkins, etc... I typically shop at Safeway, Trader Joes or Costco, but have been adding in this place to the mix as they have reasonable prices and have remodeled the store so it has more of a grocery store type of feel. (Instead of a small warehouse that it once was). It's a good place to pick up party supplies like paper plates, plastic knifes, forks, cups, etc... They have plenty of drink items kind of like a Bevmo, buy in bulk. The produce section is what impressed me the most. They have a small organic section and a surprising section of fruit and veggies. The prices in general are pretty good as well. (I think we will see more inflation going forward through) =( The parking lot is a 'joke' as it is way too small. Best to try to shop here on the weekdays and off hours. (Before and after lunch) Worth a try if you live near this area of Cambrian, maybe not as a primary grocery store, but one that you can add into the mix. read more

Nothing makes me angrier than a store that doesn't even try to limit the number of items in the express lane. Supposedly it's 10 items, but today, there was a guy who FILLED his grocery cart with at least 20 items, and to make matters worse, he split his purchases into two transactions, making it take even longer. WHY HAVE AN EXPRESS LINE IF YOU LET ANYONE USE IT REGARDLESS OF HOW MANY ITEMS THEY HAVE??? This is not the first time this has happened. This was my first visit to this location. The place was clean. I was able to get help in locating what I needed. Great selection. The cashier, Janelle, was friendly. I thought I went to the wrong store. I normally go to the Smart and Final in Santa Clara since it's near my home. I made the assumption that most locations were like the Santa Clara location- an understaffed dump with rude employees. Wrong. This one is way better. I am always surprised by Smart & Final! They went through a recent remodel and made the store much nicer. They now have a large produce section and many more items as they expanded into some space next door. Smart and Final can now compete with regular grocery stores such as Safeway but they have much better prices. Also, if you have never been to Smart and Final, it is like a cross between a normal grocery store and a Costco(but you don't need a membership_. The have both regular items as well as large quantity items, and it is perfect for party supplies, all on a discount! read more

Smart & Final was OK. Then they re-did it. I was excited when Target got groceries, but they are blown away by the recent up grade of Smart & Final to Smart & Final Extra! The selection has gone from OK to amazing. You can now get everything in bulk or smaller sizes. The prices are great. This smart and final has been completely cleaned up and re-organized. Where it used to be confusing and kinda gross it is now pristine and organized. The assortment of foods is great. They loose one star because their produce is not always fantastic. (I picked up a pack of garlic heads and 3 of the 4 garlic heads had mold). Bt if you're look for dairy, or packaged foods, Smart & Final has got you covered. I have not yet tried to meet, but I am hopeful that it is good. read more

On the plus side: They have a good selection of foods, sometimes things you can't get at the bigger stores like Safeway, and prices are often lower. On the minus side: Long lines. I suspect they don't pay their people very well. During my most recent visit the checker was engaging in a long-winded and loud personal conversation with another customer while the line backed up behind me. When it was finally my turn the checker burst into tears and ran off screaming "I need a break!" It was really bizarre. The line manager had to came over and ring me up. read more

I liked Smart and Final before the remodle and now I really like it. You can get 90% of what you need here as well as off the wall type stuff you wouldn't find in Safeway/Lucky's. For a smaller family it's a perfect place to shop. Costco is great but their sizes/portions are rediculous. I also agree the staff doesn't seem to be up to par with the store, but hey what can you expect out of hourly employee's? Nice work S&F. read more

They generally have what I need when I shop here, but I try not to due to the absurd lines. So many times I've gone to find only 2 registers open with lines 6 people long at each. And usually their carts are piled high too...15 min wait easy. I like some of the cashiers, nice people, but its not worth it. read more

I shop here a lot, and they do a great job of keeping things clean and tidy. When COVID hit, they implemented cleaning protocols immediately, and I've always felt safe here. Their meat prices are awesome, produce is fresh, and the service is great. Their cashiers are knowledgeable and friendly, and always try to anticipate my needs as a shopper. I live near by Safeway, Lucky and Trader Joe's, and Smart & Final is the farthest, but I prefer to shop here for certain products. This store is the only store that have Jenny O's Turkey dog and their liquor selection is very extensive, and it is cheaper than Safeway/Lucky. They also have a good selection of trail nut mix. The line is bit long, but doable for me on a Saturday. read more
