Store is okay as far as appearance goes, could be a little cleaner, there's sort of a strong smell to it? Like from out side you can smell the store. I have noticed the quality of fruit is a hit and miss and their off-brand chicken had a weird smell and texture, but more importantly, the quality of employees is getting out of hand. They used to greet you and say "thank you". This was the last straw; a tall young Latino man with a mustache was a cashier. He had no name tag, used someone else's cashier account, didn't even acknowledge my existence, and virtually threw the receipt at me. WTF? You know what would improve this particular store? This Smart and Final is the best one! We've been to the San Bruno, San Mateo, and Daly City locations and they aren't as spacious. Also, the produce is much fresher and best quality. Some of the produce is cheaper than Safeway. read more

After years of reprieve, the store manager is now doing the Smart & Final 'screw you' again. Here's how it works. On attempting to check out, the checker turns to you with an expectant expression and a total on the screen. Except that is the untaxed total. You scramble to hand over the money. Suddenly the total increases to include tax. Now you are back in your wallet to pay the new total. I get it: gangbangers are cheap and getting more plentiful every day. Today I was threatened by an employee by the name of Chicharrone . And when I told him that I would report him, he laughed and said " I don't give a "F...k". I will report him to the corporate and urge people to start away from this location. Please see below the circumstances: Today on 03/13/25, I went to smart and final ( receipt attached) to purchase a few items one of which was a case of mushrooms. I asked the lady that was there whether they had a case and she was very nice and told me they had run out but suggested I visit the hillsdale Ave location. I told her that they always give me the run around but I will give it a shot. I then proceeded to drive up there, as I entered I encountered this employee by the name of Chicharrone so I asked him nicely whether they had any mushrooms and without any hesitation he said " no " we don't . When I told him that they always say no before checking, he started laughing at me and became very hostile. He then proceeded to talk to another employee and make fun of me and continue laughing . I then asked him when his name was and he said"why?" Anyways he started getting close to me and I just read his name I responded to him that I would report him. He tuned about and said" I don't give a F..k, leave or I kick your A..s". So out of the concern for my safety, I left and got in my car and took off . They consistently close the store early based on management's personal preferences, disregarding customer needs and listed scheduled opening hours. Unreliable and inconsiderate, this store fails to prioritize its customers. Until Smart and Final Leadership adopts a customer-centric approach and recruits experienced management staff for this Hillsdale store consider shopping elsewhere as I will do. Smart Failure I was honestly really excited when we moved to this 'hood and Smart & Final (S&F) was within walking distance. I've shopped here in the past every once in awhile and really liked it, but we're quickly realizing this is one of those too many times to the well situation. The Good: *Prices are fairly competitive for the most part *Huge discount section in the back-left corner of the store The Meh: *Never enough cashiers on-hand and the lines are a bit ridiculous at times. They need to seriously invest in a self-checkout line. *Speaking of the cashiers, they all look like they hate their lives and can barely grunt an acknowledgment let alone smile and say "hello" or "thank you." I honestly could care less because I despise pleasantries but *some people* care. ;) *The store itself has a funky odor about it. Kinda like a mix of rotting produce and ass... The Ugly: *There's a smell of rotting produce because there's almost always rotting produce somewhere in the store. Their QA/QC is awful--so make sure you check dates and inspect everything twice before buying. TLDR: We hate it but unfortunately it's a necessary evil, as it's the only legit grocery store within walking distance--unless you count Target, but they're not very complete. I woke up too early and had my latte already so I checked out Smart & Final on Hillsdale. Not many places are open at 7:30am. I was quite impressed! They had organic and gluten free items. They still have all party and kitchen stuff. But the store was well stocked with many grocery items. And extensive beer and wine section. Before 8am there's hardly a line. Good service! read more

This is the backup grocery store that I go to in case the items at my local store run out. This is a small but very nice store, where I can find a good price on some items that I need. If you are shopping for a business or special event this is your store to go to. With Target nearby, it makes any block, outdoor party or park day a very good one. You can find some great soda at a very good price as with some BBQ meats. I also like the very good neighborhood setting this place has. The checkout lights are actually based on vintage light posts that you see in the downtown San Jose area. This grocery store is close to our place so we go here fairly often. It's not my favorite store. It often has long lines with few cashiers, and I'm not a fan of the atmosphere of the store. Also, there's usually not a lot of great customer service. However, this morning I had a fantastic experience at this location thanks to Nancy. She pulled me from another line since she was open. She greeted me with friendliness and we had a lovely chat while she rang up my groceries. I left the store feeling like we were great friends. Thank you, Nancy! Don't come to Smart & Final expecting to find better deals than you might find at Safeway or even Target right across the street. For some reason I had the impression that Smart & Final was a budget grocer, offering good deals on bulk or off-brand items, but it only took a few trips here to correct that misconception. Not only are most items as expensive as you would find elsewhere, some things are even overpriced to the point that my wife and I came back to return a few purchases after finding far better deals on them at other local grocers. It's not all bad though. Once you accept the price point, they have a really solid selection and you can find certain items in bigger quantities here than you can at most grocery stores. I also noticed that the fresh produce actually does seem to cheaper than at other places, so if you are just coming from your fruits and vegetables you might be in for a better trip. read more

Been a long long time since I've been to this Smart and final. As I walked in I noticed that the store looks really nice inside "I didn't remember it being so big" and has a wide selection of food and drink. I picked up two 3lb containers of Deviled egg potato salad "so good", value pack of water bottles and a value pack of plastic cups. I was able to talk to 2 employees, both of them were nice. Smart and final is doing a great job during the pandemic. They seem to be taking the shelter in place seriously and have set up the store to encourage social distancing. They seem to have a lot of the items that the other stores don't have. I've been able to get toilet paper there as well as eggs and meat and bread and everything else. Don't buy flowers from this store. They don't know how to keep flowers fresh. You buy them and if you don't have a receipt they don't even exchange it. The Smart & Final on Hillsdale Ave. has been an all-star for us during SIP! First of all - so much thanks and kudos to the staff here. I've visited here several times during and despite all the craziness going in the world right now, they are always so pleasant and helpful. The store has been doing an amazing job with providing disinfectant spray, paper towels, and disposable gloves at the entrance. They set up the line so it's very controlled (other stores I experienced lack of distancing in the front lanes). They also have a security guard in the front to help control the # of people in and out of the store. Onto the inventory...they are doing as best as they can! No place nowadays has everything in stock but I find that I am able to get most of my groceries here. Produce and meat selections are decent! Overall, prices are great too (especially for ad items). As an ode to it's status as "warehouse retailer", they also stock way more cleaning supplies and other supplies like paper plates/cups in bulk. A well deserved 5 stars. Meat bought on 12/7 and put in the freezer. 12/8 I took the meat out to defrost and cook for dinner. When I opened the package the smell was horrible. Called the store Roxanne asked if I cooked it and make sure I bring my receipt to get credit. Saying again make sure I bring the receipt. When I told her I could not come today she said put it back in the freezer and whenever I bring it back make sure you bring the receipt. What??? Also talking to somone else as she is talking to me. I will preface this review by stating that all my previous shopping trips here have been great! This is my go to Smart & Final. I'd normally rate this place with 5 stars as I love the variety in products they carry, the weekly deals they offer, and the staff is generally very nice, always greeting me even as I walk around aimlessly trying to remember what I went in to buy. I generally come here after my workout at the gym across the street. It's perfect since they open so early; they open at 6 AM daily. I'm usually very satisfied with my shopping experience at this location and is why I frequently shop here. Today, however, I did not have a very pleasant experience. I got in line with 2 items. The customer ahead of me had a full cart of items. As the associate finished ringing up the customer, she noticed there were 2 people behind me as well so she called for another lane to be opened. I was next in line, thinking I'd get asked to move to the newly opened line with my 2 items. Nope! The girl who opened the new lane grabbed the very last guy in my line and rung him up first. Here's the kicker, after she rang him up, she closed her line and went back to stocking whilst the associate in my line was still bagging the groceries for the customer that was ahead of me. I didn't say anything since I figured my wait won't be much longer so why make it an issue. My turn. I had 2 Fuji apples that is sold by weight and 16 avocados sold @ 2 for $1. She scanned my items and I paid. As I was leaving, I glanced at my receipt and noticed the avocados rang up at $0.63 each, not 2 for $1. I immediately turned around and alerted the associate that I was overcharged. She then told another associate who was in the produce section about the price discrepancy. He mentioned there might be a limit to the sale price. Both the associate who helped me and myself looked at the weekly ad and it does indeed state a 12 item limit on the sale avocados. I asked the associate in produce why I was charged $0.63 for each when the sale is for 2 for $1, even if there was a limit. I was under the assumption that the register would at least been able to price the first 12 correctly and then shut for the next 4. My checker then went on to say that I have to have them rung up separately in order for the register to ring up the sale items correctly. She said it in an "as a matter of fact" kind of way. I was surprised since firstly there was no limit posted on the sign for the avocados and it was only in the ad and secondly how am I supposed to know how they should be rung up when she didn't even know when ringing me up? The onus is on her to know how to do her job, not me. She then offered no resolution and instead just repeated that they have to be rung up specially so the sale price would be reflected. I said I don't wanted the 16 avocados but they shouldn't all be $0.63 each. I then said, what do we do now? It wasn't until I said that, did she ask for my receipt to do a refund. She needed to call a manager for an override in order to do a refund. After all this, she got the refund wrong too. I was overcharged $0.13 for 12 avocados, which works out to be a $1.56 refund; I received $1.44. I didn't bother correcting her again as I just wanted to go home, so I thanked her and left. Not going to stop me from shopping here but definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. read more
