As much as I appreciate a Smart and Final in my area now, there have been a couple things that turn me off. The overall prices are high, much like the well known expensive supermarket across the street. And the produce department needs to show more care towards their product. I worked produce for several years at a major chain, so apples dumped out of the box to the table and lettuces that are dry and limp show improper care and concern. I just left this store. This is both my and my parent's neighborhood store. We come here often. Today I felt unsafe and I don't know when I will return. While in the candy aisle, stocking up for Halloween, a manager, Michael, was taking pictures of the shelves. I heard a young man (tall, thin, long curly black hair) say "don't take pictures of me." I don't know whether Michael took a picture of the young man or not, but the conversation got heated very quickly with the manager making comments insinuating that if he was not at work, he would fight the man. The young man turned away briefly and then returned to the section he was shopping in with his cart. I walked out of the aisle hoping everything cooled down. When I got to the register, the young man was in line with his cart. Michael walked up to him telling the man no one was going to ring him up. He continued to antagonize the man as he waited in line to purchase his items. Eventually, the man asked Michael if he was ever out of work. He asked Michael if he only acted this brave there. Michael continued to provoke the man. Michael went to the cashier and told her not to ring him up. The man responded to the provocation that they could meet outside and left the store without purchasing his items. There were many opportunities for Michael to diffuse this situation. I am not condoning what the young man said, but much of it was in response to Michael. As a manager (so he proclaimed to be), it's Michael's responsibility to promote a welcoming and safe shopping experience. A simple "I'm sorry, there must be a misunderstanding, can I help you find anything today?" would have ended it and made the young man feel like a valued and welcomed customer. Instead, he was met with immediate disdain and hostility. Michael could have walked away when the man got in line to pay for his items rather than stand next to him to antagonize him under his breath and then walk over to the cashier to announce she couldn't ring him up, thus embarrassing him. Michael didn't need to announce "Don't come back to MY store!" as the young man walked out without his items. Michael certainly didn't need to stand outside the front door, after the young man left, with his arms crossed, as if he was welcoming the young man to come back and fight him. We live in times when violence at grocery stores erupts all too often. It is absolutely inexcusable in every case. Unfortunately, this store has at least one manager who invites and promotes a hostile environment for what I can only guess is ego. Management has much to learn about customer service. Today's experience was such a disappointment. read more

I am so happy that we have a Smart and final extra in our neighborhood. The store is very clean. the customer service is the best. All the employees greet you with the smile. The vegetables are always fresh and the prices are great. My first time reviewing Smart and Final Extra in 2019 at 2644 Mt Vernon ave Baketsfield. I went this evening to Smart And Fianal with my big list to buy my store needs, I was in hurry to get it done before they close @ 10:00 pm. Ms Melissa welcomed me and asked if I need help,so she got most of my list done after helping an old man before me. I want to give her a big credit for helping elder people also for the best customers service with a nice smile every time I am shopping there. Bougie! And I like it! I walked in expecting those bargain prices and that Smart & Final Exxxtra sale. It was never to be found. Instead, I found a store that resembles Trader's, Vons, even Whole Foods. It's a beautiful store. It has foreign delicacies such as dragon fruit and cherimoya. They have classic staples such as that whole chicken pre-made. And the wine! Countless varieties to supply a weekend-wino like me with a different country every week. I do not regularly do reviews on yelp but I experienced something that compelled me to write this review. I am a mother that shops at smart & final for a family of nine. As we all have felt changes from the pandemic crisis the biggest affect it has made on me is feeding my whole family. I do most of my monthly grocery shopping at the beginning of the month. When I went around the 6th of March a box of 150 eggs were $19.99 but I did not purchase them. I have six kids that range from the age of 2-19 years old and after the kids were sent home from school due to covid19 I knew we needed a heavier load of groceries especially breakfast so I did another grocery run at Smart & final. Around the 15th when I went a second time the eggs price jumped to $26.99 I knew increasing families were in need. The jump did not bother me BUT then as the week passed with everyone home the eggs were used quickly, it was more than a normal week. I had to go back a little over a week later around the 25th to get more eggs and this time was concerning. The same box of eggs were 39.99!! I was blown away. I have heard of price gauging on the news but never expected to go through it. The workers were nice and did not know what to say. My heart hurts for all the families in need that will come across this. Will not be shopping there once the crisis slows down and we do regular shopping again. Well the East side has a Smart and Final Yeah??? Unfortunately where it is located parking and getting in and out of the place are not fun at all. The Grand Opening Specials where huge!!!! Tri-Tip for $2.50 HUGE deal. For our everyday shopping we will still make the drive to the other side of town to Walmart Grocery store on Olive and Calloway. I feel the store is much cleaner, easier to get in and out and the everyday shopping seems cheaper. read more

This location is located right behind the very old Sizzler on MT Vernon. before construction got started here, this was just empty dirt fields and some random offices that I never really knew existed....needless to say this looked to be a dying area. However, late 2017 this area started to get a facelift and new construction started....as usual speculation started rising that we were finally getting an IN-n-Out burger on the east side. WRONG, lol we were getting a flame broiler (yay) chipotle (booo) and someother joints by the old wic office. But a big building was being built in the back....interesting..... After some time, rumor had it we were getting a Smart and Final... As an east sider....I have HEARD about this place but never shopped there...I just figured it was going to be another Albertsons...a place where snooty people went to avoid the ghetto-ness that overtakes Foodsco and Walmart (the north east side's only real grocery options). Boy was I wrong. Now this place not be as cheap as a foodsco or wal mart when I comes to grocery items...it's not as expensive as an Albertson's. It's a fair medium. You'll pay a little more but you'll also get a cleaner store and better quality food. The selling point of this place is they sell a lot of things in bulk, so you'll see a lot of oversized products...and like Winco they have an area where you can measure out pantry items (and candy's) and buy by the pound. I really dug it. The employees are all very nice and very helpful, no complaints here from me. Also I really thought it was cool to see every cash register named after each big street on the East Side (Mt Vernon, Niles, HWY 187) ALSOOOO I'll say this every time I've been here , it looks waaaaaaaaaaay more packed than it really is, the parking lot is deceiving. so keep that in mind as well when you're deciding whether or not to go in. read more

I'm very happy with Smart & Final in general. I feel they stepped up when covid hit and continue to enforce masks, social distancing and products are always available to wipe down your cart. This one on Mt Vernon I frequent the most and majority of the time I find everything I need. Tonight they were low on a few items and I asked an associate if they had an item in the back, he confidently said "no, but they were getting a shipment in tomorrow." A few minutes later another associate was walking by and greeted us, asked if we were finding everything we needed and I had told her I had not. She stopped, asked what it was and she said she'd go check. I had told her what the other associate had said, but she said she go check anyways and there came Wynette (sorry if misspelled I only glanced at her name tag) with my item! I called the store when I got home and spoke with Issac, let him know what a great employee he has and wanted to let the company know too. Thank you Wynette for going above and beyond. So we have another grocery store on the east-side, yay! Like everything else new on the east-side I hope that it retains it's initial quality as well as it's proverbial "like-new" atmosphere. The joint itself is clean, new and fresh. The aisles are clean if not a little cramped, especially since all of east Bako was there... The selection of various products was ample. Prices werer in-line with what you would expect. The downside to the nice-and-new aspect was the employees... We encountered one employee pushing a broom/dust-mop (which is fine) several times as we traversed the store. Half of the time, he was standing idle in the aisle while checking his cell phone, and only moving when he realized he was blocking the flow of foot traffic. In fact, while I think that it is admirable that there were plenty of staff working, cleaning and restocking, there were at times to many of them (especially with the narrow aisles mentioned earlier). I am hoping that as the newness wears off that the employees will fall into a better routine (like when you go to any other grocery store in town). read more

This is a nice, clean new store. It has the same items and good prices as the other Smart & Final stores. I really like the selection of kitchen items. They have all the right stuff there. I found the staff to be really nice and friendly. The parking lot is a little dicey due to the construction still happening in he area, but they have made the best of it. We are really happy to have a Smart & Final in East Bakersfield. It's about time. We will do our best to support this store so it stays. read more

I Shop for our community, this location is amazing from Steve ordering more things that my customers may need or Eva, treated me like family or Anthony loading my car or Trina having a great conversation with me or Paris smiling at the register or G making sure the produce are always right for Meir Branden getting bread or anything I can't seem to find because my brain went on vacation or Melissa getting a box of foam cups for me and Bernardo (BD) always making sure I get the meat I'm shopping for or Brittany making sure the sweet table is always on deck or Alex being my back up Steve and Kristina my soul sister just as sweet as they come. So glad to have a Smart & Final on our side of town! So far so good... well stock and clean. Staff were all helpful and friendly. Only issue we found about this store is the smaller aisles (naturally smaller coz the store IS smaller). When you go through aisles with displays along the aisles by the shelves, it's too tight for 2 carts to go through. Lines at checkout weren't very long even when it was the day before Thanksgiving when we went to grab some holiday dinner items. All checkout lanes were open. It's also cool how they named the checkout aisles Street names from the East side! Parking was alright. Doesn't look like there was enough parking when you drive in but with the construction going on in the area you couldn't see there's more parking spaces until you're actually in there. It might be an issue later though when everyone starts coming here. So we will see! I hope this store stays clean. That's one of my pet peeve!
