This hotel is quite awesome and deserving of a huge shout out. The design alone is impressive as it…read moreis situated on the river and looks like a ship docked in harbor. It's ultra modern vibe with two bars and an award winning restaurant adds to the details that were certainly not overlooked when designing it. Although I personally am not a fan of orange and my room has orange chairs and carpet, that is a minor detail that can easily be overlooked. I know some rooms are orange and some are green. The carpet along the hallways and art work actually reminds me of Coachella which is hilarious since it was pretty recent. The bed is super comfortable and the pillows also extremely comfortable. Only in the middle of the night did I notice that the bed was actually two twin beds pushed together to make a queen size bed. I switched back to the right side and fell back asleep comfortably. The room was extremely spacious and the view of the river from my room remarkable. The bathroom clean and sleek and stocked with the perfect toiletries including liquid body wash which I prefer so much compared to the bars of soap that dry out your skin. For dinner, I went to the cafe on the first floor that serves food until 10 pm and had a delicious vegetable soup with brown bread, as well as an apple and pear tart with crumble served with vanilla custard and whipped cream. The best surprise was the two mini Cadbury eggs on the exquisite plating. They are my favorite Easter candy, and they taste so much better in Ireland than in the States. I was full from the lunch I had, but I knew if I didn't eat I would wake up in the middle of the night famished. Breakfast is served in The Kitchen and is a nice buffet served with options for people who prefer gluten free. I think breakfast is my least favorite meal in Ireland because I just don't enjoy black pudding and beans with overly seasoned grilled tomatoes, but I have been content when I find porridge and fruit. I did enjoy fried egg whites and delicious bread with some fruit...and the butter. Irish butter is just so good. This hotel is sure to please everyone who stays here, and I highly recommend it when in Sligo.

Regrettably disappointed with this B&B. So much so, we left before we even checked in!…read more After driving nearly four hours from Dublin we arrived to find the B&B had no obvious parking. I had to ring them twice to ask them how to get to their car park. This 'private car park', as stated on Bank House's website, was basically a lane way and space for two cars at the top of the lane. There was no space to park in the lane way, and the two other spots were full. The lady in the B&B said she would move one of the two cars at the top of the lane way so we could pull in. She did so, we pulled in, then she parked the car she moved behind us, so we were stuck in there! "I'll be happy to move the car if you want to get out," she said. She even mentioned guests leaving their car keys with reception, so cars could be moved. No freaking way were we going to leave the car keys with anyone! First off, as paying guests, I think we should have the liberty to come and go as we please and not have to go through such rigamarole every time. Secondly, the lady told us some of the cars taking up the B&B's parking spaces belonged to employees of the bank next door, who park in the B&B's spaces because it would cost them to park on the street!! Excuse me, but shouldn't your guests have priority, and isn't it the bank employees' problem to sort out their own parking?! Thirdly, at the rear of the B&B, across the street, was a little amusement park. Quiet night's sleep? I think not. We high-tailed it out of there, and despite the lady saying we probably won't find any other accommodation in Bundoran, we found another lovely B&B a couple of minutes' drive up the street, thank you very much. Get your parking sorted, Bank House - your paying guests come first!

Apart from the group bookings there didn't appear to be any other guests. We had to pay up front at the check in desk (which was understandable considering groups seem to be their main business). The hotel location is perfect, right adjacent to the town centre and only 15mins from Strandhill. The decor in the rooms was slightly dated but they were clean and had everything we needed. The hotel reception was nice and comfortable and the bar and restaurant was more than adequate. I managed to get a spot in the car park which was handy because the on street parking is metered. In summary, this hotel is ideal for group bookings but a €43 per person per night it was a little bit too expensive considering there was 3 people to a room.

It's a good spot for groups, but I was woken up by a noisy stag party at 3am but that's not the management's fault. My wife and I have stayed here before certainly on at least ten occasions but not in the last 2/3 years and it was certainly as good as we remembered it. They were busy and the car park was well full, the welcome was friendly and check-in took a few minutes slowed by my not remembering my car reg plate. Our 1st floor rooms I think superior rooms were comfortable and quite a stroll to breakfast but that's a bonus to get our steps in. The bar was lively, good-spirited clientele and staff were pleasant, despite being run off their feet, and we dined there both nights. The Guinness was good as was the local beer but I think the Japanese draft beer wasn't available as that would be my choice. The evening bar food was quite good, but I'm always disappointed at the lack of fish on the menu and it's not only in this hotel. I do recognise and do not attribute criticism of the hotel here as they are customer driven and sadly we aren't big fish eaters. I'm just happy to pay for great fish; crab, lobster, turbot, Dover sole. I had the seafood chowder and it was really good and sirloin with pepper sauce but there's no Colman's mustard and I really dislike the sauce in sachets not least that they are a nuisance to open but the quality is poorer and they contain more chemicals/additives than the brand names HP/Heinz. Breakfast was delightful and the breakfast room is wonderful. I do commend management on offering fish at breakfast as it was one of my few criticisms of this hotel over the years so thank you. The gripe I faced with my wife and our great friends was that the brekky room was too warm. As they say in the north and I thought it into myself - away on a that with ye, a bit of heat is great. There was one irritation though. There's only two EV chargers on site and they are low powered. They even look makeshift. I was lucky to get to use one on the first evening. I just went out to note my car registration and a chap shouted over as he was coming to take his car off charge. The manager told me of a new high powered charger about a quarter mile away (Applegreen) and she was right; it put in about 100 miles but it was not my idea of a holiday on a very wet windy Thursday night after 6pm and it wasn't pleasant loitering half an hour in the cold damp garage when my company were having drinks at the bar. I'm sure there are plans to extend EV facilities here and I think that management has sacrificed disabled parking to facilitate EV as there's little parking for less mobility able guests. On balance it just tips to five stars for the price paid but no Colmans mustard, low quality sauces in plastic pouches, little disabled parking and few EV chargers need some focus. We hope to return in the next year.

DOWNHILL HOUSE HOTEL…read more The Downhill House Hotel, on the Sligo Road, was our Ballina base for a recent trip to County Mayo. The Hotel, in a wooded riverside location quite close to the town centre, is well up to its 3 star rating. All the staff are friendly and efficient; the rooms and public areas are comfortable, the leisure centre is popular and the Hotel also boasts well kept gardens where you can sit and stroll. We enjoyed an excellent evening meal there: braised shank of lamb with an exceptional red wine sauce. A bottle of red from one of the Bordeaux chateaux cost just €20.00. Service here is also friendly though sometimes a bit over attentive - you don't need your glass of water topped up each time you take a sup! The breakfast was also very good and the full Irish was perhaps the best that I've come across. If dinner is not included in your package, the restaurant prices can be very stiff and this is where the bar comes to the rescue. Prices are reasonable here and the chef's special often includes two or three items from the restaurant menu. We had a mild chicken curry one evening and it was a superb example of the type. Really this is only a 3 star hotel with 3 star facilities and in 2 star condition and yet that's…read moreprobably the last negative thing I'll say about it... The most important things I need from a hotel, at least when traveling for work, is a comfortable bed, a half decent bar, wifi and a good shower - the Downhill easily covers these 4 prerequisites and does so well. True the hotel is wayyyy past its best, in need of some serious redecorating and updating but it has the basics right. Likewise the bar food menu looks very unpromising but it was late when we got in last night and we had no choice but to brave it - we were very pleasantly surprised, we all had sirloin steak and chips and it was great, no complaints at all. Breakfast is again, not bad, not the highest quality ingredients but it hit the spot. So, for 65Euro (inc breakfast) I'd say worth it, fine for work but not for a weekend getaway I reckon.
