It's ultra modern vibe with two bars and an award winning restaurant adds to the details that were certainly not overlooked when designing it. Although I personally am not a fan of orange and my room has orange chairs and carpet, that is a minor detail that can easily be overlooked. I know some rooms are orange and some are green. The carpet along the hallways and art work actually reminds me of Coachella which is hilarious since it was pretty recent. The bed is super comfortable and the pillows also extremely comfortable. Only in the middle of the night did I notice that the bed was actually two twin beds pushed together to make a queen size bed. I switched back to the right side and fell back asleep comfortably. The room was extremely spacious and the view of the river from my room remarkable. The bathroom clean and sleek and stocked with the perfect toiletries including liquid body wash which I prefer so much compared to the bars of soap that dry out your skin. For dinner, I went to the cafe on the first floor that serves food until 10 pm and had a delicious vegetable soup with brown bread, as well as an apple and pear tart with crumble served with vanilla custard and whipped cream. The best surprise was the two mini Cadbury eggs on the exquisite plating. They are my favorite Easter candy, and they taste so much better in Ireland than in the States. I was full from the lunch I had, but I knew if I didn't eat I would wake up in the middle of the night famished. Breakfast is served in The Kitchen and is a nice buffet served with options for people who prefer gluten free. I think breakfast is my least favorite meal in Ireland because I just don't enjoy black pudding and beans with overly seasoned grilled tomatoes, but I have been content when I find porridge and fruit. I did enjoy fried egg whites and delicious bread with some fruit...and the butter. Irish butter is just so good. This hotel is sure to please everyone who stays here, and I highly recommend it when in Sligo.

Ditto for the person who checked me out the next morning. I spent a few extra dollars to get the ocean view rooms, and it was really worth it. I checked in around sunset, so my photos came out far better than they usually do. Continental breakfast was included, and it was much more than I expected. The pantry appears to have stocked every available type of cereal in Ireland, along with a large selection of fresh fruit and deli meats.

The hotel is not directly on the seafront and it's probably about a 12-minute walk into town. The lobby is minimally decorated but very clean and all the staff are genuinely polite, quick and eager to please. The rooms are a dream -- very very large, great balconies with views of the sea, spacious bathrooms with excellent water pressure and big comfortable beds. Free wifi, free parking and complimentary "continental" breakfast. "Continental" in the most self-effacing sense, this breakfast actually includes an impressive spread of cold cuts, yogurts, cereals, boiled eggs, scones, croissants, tea, coffee, juice. We got what we wanted out of Strandhill: a moment of repose, reflection, refreshment and zero hassles. The best place to stay in this town.

An exceptional experience from start to finish! Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was perfect…read more Check in was a breeze..we just went up to the gentleman at the desk, gave him our name, and he handed us the key to our room. It took, maybe, three minutes. He also confirmed our dinner reservations for the evening. In the lobby (which was more like a grand hall), they had a lovely array of complimentary coffee, teas, and pastries...all served with beautiful bone china. The castle is absolutely stunning both inside and out. The interiors are grand, and the grounds are just beautiful. We spent several hours walking around the park-like setting, and had drinks on the terrace overlooking the garden. Fantastic. We also walked through every inch of the interior's public rooms...don't miss the church! The entrance to our room was tucked away under a staircase. When I first saw it I thought, "Oh no, this room is going to be the size of a closet". When we went in we were taken aback. It was massive, with a very comfortable bed, sitting area, bathroom and a huge jetted tub. And it was clean as a pin, too. Dinner in the castle's opulent Dining Room was exemplary. Service was friendly and good-humored, and the food was very, very good. My wife had the salmon and I had the beef; both were perfect. We did the 3 course meal for 65 euros each, and feel it was worth every penny. Breakfast the next morning was just as good. It was also in the Dining Room, and was included in the rate we paid. Hot food was ordered off the menu, and cool food (cereals, fruit, cold meats, etc.) were offered buffet style. One last thing: as opulent, grand, and over-the-top as Markree Castle is, the one thing it wasn't was pretentious. You don't have to break out your tux, or sequined cocktail dress; as long as you don't look like you just rolled out of bed, you should be fine. At dinner I wore a white dress shirt and a nice pair of green jeans; I felt perfectly comfortable. Out of the 12 nights we spent in Ireland, this was our favorite we stayed. It's more than just a bed to put your head on; it's an experience, and an amazing one at that.

Once you're there though, it's the perfect place to disappear to for a few days of relaxation. We stayed at the apartments on the estate, in a converted stables. They were really nicely set up, very comfortable. These are pet-friendly too, so our dog was able to join us for the trip. It was great to just be able to take her for a walk around the estate. Location wise, there's a lot to do for outdoorsy types. A couple of loughs and bogs are good for hikers, and a few nice pubs in nearby Coolooney.

We got to use the pool area this time. We just didn't bother in July; this time round we found the jacuzzi and sauna relaxing. I do prefer steam rooms but, for whatever reason, theirs wasn't operating when we were there. All the staff, as ever, were mega friendly, courteous and helpful. The hotel seemed well full of guests when we were there and I'm glad as they need our support. All the food was, at least, very good with some of it exceptional, but there were a few things that irked not though too tedious to warrant fewer than 5 stars but it came close. There's never a fish choice at breakfast and perhaps they should now re think this especially given the food price rises mentioned later? There was some breakfast chaos daily - the price of busy caused some pressures - we got tea and waited forever for coffee. We had to ask a few times before it came. We asked for well browned toast but it wasn't. We also ordered stuff that just never came and we gave up - staff were run of their feet and on one morning the general manager mucked in to help and good on him. When we eventually got the coffee we realised there was no milk on the table so after asking for it, it too took ages to come, and a few more reminders before it arrived. By that time the tea that has come first, ages before, was cold in the cup and tepid in the pot so we needed a clean cup for tea. It was becoming tiresome. I asked for an Americano at breakfast to be told it was €3.5. I said I got it without charge in July to be told there's always been a charge. The evening dinners in the restaurant were quite good but we noticed a few main dish price rises, some nearly 50% up - for example the cod main has gone from €16.9 to €24.5 - ouch. The pork dishes had a similar uplift. The soup starter too is now way overpriced. Funnily enough the price hikes weren't the most annoying thing for me (but it's important in hospitality to be price sensitive) it was when we got our apple crumble desserts. Now the apple crumble pies are well made here. It's a very tasty pud with a bit of texture and importantly of course, crunch, unless some twit sticks it in a microwave to warm it. This is exact what happened - all that effort completely spoiled by a short cut: microwave rewarming. Totally spoiled the darn pie and it came close to losing at least one star. We hope to return before Christmas
