Walk back in time. Sleepy Hollow not only has the graves of Thoreau, Emerson, Hawthorne and Alcott but numerous other figures that make Concord Massachusetts the historic powerhouse that it is today. Such as Alexander Urquhart, a businessman, who built the bakery building that now houses "Helen's Restaurant" on Main Street. There is a map available at the visitor center with all the famous buried at Sleepy Hollow. If you or anyone you know is a bibliophile, you need to pay a visit to Sleepy Hollow. Here you will find Authors Ridge and the graves of several luminary American authors: Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathanial Hawthorne and my favorite, Henry David Thoreau. I took my wife (she's a writer) here as a surprise outing and she was very moved. If you have kids, and they have seen any of the Sleepy Hollow movies like the old cartoon from Walt (informer) Disney then they will get a kick out of actually visiting a cemetery named Sleepy Hollow. I recommend a visit on a drizzly October day. We visited on such a day and left feeling inspired by these authors whose works continue like a river through time, influencing generations.

Majestic, serene and a throw back in time to a very different era lies the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord MA. In the rear on an elevated knoll are the family plots of Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne and Louisa May Alcott 19th century literary luminaries who helped shape the literature of that period. It is a beautiful solemn spot where devotees over the years have come to pay homage and leave little remembrances of their visits. You cannot help but be moved by the simplicity and charm bolstered by the the history that surrounds the area.

Certainly most of the visitors come to this cemetery attracted by the famous authors who died while living in Concord. The hill where their graves stand is called "Author's Ridge" and probably is the most busy part of Sleepy Hollow. My advice is take your time to walk throughout the cemetery (the hilly parts will give you a nice view of the whole area). I dare say that even during an uncharacteristically warm winter day, with a lot of mud from the snow that have melted, the walk was very pleasant and peaceful.

I agree with Jim W., every (transidental) literature geek should come here. It is a beautiful cemetary - old, roomy, calm - and an homage to people of the past. It is walkable from Concord's town center, but I would recommend driving to the cemetery and parking. Go on a beautiful day, and you won't be disappointed.

I came for 2 reasons: 1. The name of the cemetary. Such a cool name! 2. Authors' Ridge. No history tour is done w/o paying some respects! It was interesting to see that they are family lots. Certainly, the first I've seen "father" on a gravestone instead of a name. Very intriguing visit. Various types of grave stones. I was most surprised by Emerson's! His was a huge a$$ rock!!

Follow the well places signs to Author's Ridge.

Totally awesome that you can see the graves on Authors Ridge. It's a very beautiful cemetery. Also love that it's called Sleepy Hollow!
