It was fresh and it was right, and it provided an Instagram worthy cheese pull if only I were into such things. The bread held its dignity. Toasted properly. No collapse, no tragedy. This raises significant concerns about the hygiene practices in place. I would advise customers to consider alternative dining options where staff prioritize proper hand hygiene. I asked for separate vinegar and oil so I could dress the salad myself, and the server was gracious and brought it to me. After dressing the salad, I couldn't even eat it. What is it with pizzerias that use their greenest, heaviest, most strong tasting and bitter olive oil in a fresh salad? It overpowers the salad, and tastes awful. We don't do that in Italy. Salads need a light tasting, light golden olive oil so you can taste the components of the fresh salad and not be massacred by the heavy bitter taste of oil. I am astounded when Italian pizzerias and restaurants do this. The good news? The sauce on the pizza was fabulous. The bad news? $16.00 for this mess. And no refill offered on the soda.

The garlic knots (3.25/5) were a bit on the smaller side, but served in a nice portion size with a decent garlic kick to them. The large cheese pizza (3.5/5) was a small notch above the central New Jersey average, with the dough, sauce, & cheese coming together for a nice pizza experience, although I did have to sprinkle on some spices to add to the flavor profile a bit. Service (4/5) while picking up was friendly, although slightly slow at first since the guy at the counter was initially fixated on his phone for a bit. Overall, I'd rate Massimo's a 3.5/5 pizza experience, and don't mind rounding up since Yelp doesn't allow half stars and menu prices were fairly reasonable.
