I was more shocked at the low prices and huge portions. I am not a huge "meat eater" but love chicken (Kip) and some pork. The lekker smell of smoked meats overcome you when you walk in (a good thing). So many choices of smoked meats, sides and anything you want. You could make a full meal and call it your own from the chicken shawarma prepared meals they have here...all you have to do is cook and serve! It is right next to the Ten Kate Markt on the Kinkerstraat....so some competition, but the market (generally) does not have raw meat sold in this capacity. A bit crowded at times...lines form down the street during these Covid-times...but I can't imagine how busy this place would be if there were no restrictions on capacity. A good, friendly place...huge selection. Check it out!

It's well-stocked with all kinds of meats (not fish of course!). There are staff members there if you need help, and they were all smiles today, something I truly appreciate. I asked if they had breakfast bacon, and sadly they don't, so he gave me something else to try. It's a clean and open area so you can easily see everything. It's all well-marked with what it is, prices, and weight. But I really couldn't believe the prices. Between three different packs of meat, a few fruit and vegetables from the market around the corner (http://www.yelp.com/biz/ten-katemarkt-amsterdam-2), was about 10 euro. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? Obviously I've been living my life wrong. But it's okay, because I have found the way. My tip: Go here and the market first, then go to the grocery store for what ever is left on your list. My guess is that you will save at least 30-50% on your groceries! I know they take pin and cash.

They have a variety of liver paste and they sell other peculiar items. I tried two types of salamis here, both had a unique and delicious smoked taste. One of the favorites here in the Netherlands is a salami that is slowly cooked by smoke at a specific temperature for one year or so. It has a raw appearance, however the meat is fully cooked by smoke and the process they are using. All sausages or salami are served with mustard the condiment of choice in the Netherlands.

Behind the counter the butchers and their helpers are busily cutting or wrapping meat. It's definitely a busy store. As is usual for me, I stand in line awaiting my turn to come up when 15 minutes or so later I realize it's a numbered system and I have to get a number. LOL. Of course the ticket number dispenser is right at the door as soon as you come in. Doh. The staff is friendly and helpful and can even decipher my kind of okay spoken Dutch. I suppose they're happy I'm at least trying. Actually it's so good that they respond in Dutch leaving me wide eyed and confused not knowing what it is they said. The prices are okay, not low not high. The meat fresh and ample. After much research I've determined the difference in cuts of meat here in Holland. The beef is leaner and has less marbling. It makes me wonder if marbled meat is available here in Holland. Regardless, it's a nice clean friendly establishment that I'll return to many times to buy my cuts of meat especially since now I know where they're located..

Unless you happen to drop by during lunch hour and happen to see a very long line of Yups, locals, and everyone else who has heard the word. In an area where you can get Surifood around every corner (literally), this place is always packed. Last time I ate at this place was 7 years ago (used to work near Bijlmer Station and frequented the place at least once a week) and I was recently delighted to find out they have literally stepped up their game: Brouwerij 't IJ beer in the fridge and a unparalleled (except maybe only to Roopram) roti production line in the front. If you are a Surifood enthousiast (which I am), happen to work in the area (which I did) or just happen to be around or within travel distance, this place is worth the visit. Especially during lunch, this place is worth the visit (the seating is Spartan at best and I wouldn't use words such as cosy, or relaxing to describe the interior). Also very glad to see a smart entrepreneur bridge cultural gaps and bring word food to a new audience (things like Craft beer in the fridge make it more enticing and recognizable for anyone who is inexperianced with the cuisine). Hooray for this place. My favorites are the vegetarian and shrimp roti rolls, but the lamb and chicken are equally good if you prefer the meat.

What a great market!…read more I usually go to the Albert Cuyp for normal shopping, as it is closer to my house, and bigger. But last Saturday, when I ended up there rather by coincidence, I remembered why I passed by there almost every week back when I used to live in Oud Zuid. Thus, I have decided to do my best to visit next week again. The market is small, but very 'gezellig'. It's quite cute actually. It has a lot of different things - flowers, burgers, wine, meats, vegetables, cheese. I also got a homemade spicy sun-dried tomato mayonnaise. It was a bit pricey at 6,95 euros, but it is amazing! Perfect also for summer dishes, I paired it with cod cheeks on little gem salad and onion-parsley-tomato salsa. Delicious! But indeed, the price is a little shocking, especially if 3 stalls further you can buy a bottle of rose for the same price (even a bit less, actually). Also, my friend and I got a burger and enjoyed it in the sun; I recommend :) There is not a lot of place to sit, but if you can snag a spot at the shared tables, it is really great. Anyways - loving it - and I will be back for sure.

A Turkish grocery store in Lombok? Wat leuk!…read more I come here a couple times per week and I really like this place. It must have the best selection of spices and grocery type stuff on Kanaalstraat. They have an extremely large deli area where you can buy dolmas, hummus, olives and other stuff by weight - and it's excellent. They always seem to have a good variety of produce and prices are reasonable. It's not the cheapest on the street, but it's worth it. Yes, dragging, I don't really find Kanaalstraat all too interesting. We used to have a few shops that we frequented that have now gone that I didn't mind going to. But this shop, this one I even volunteer to go to! My dad loves to find some of the stuff that we buy in Israel and can't usually get here and quite frankly, I do too! I must say that the shop has lost a little bit of it's charm with the redecorating they did last year, but it does look a lot neater and it means more room for the gigantic assortment of nuts they added, including chocolate covered nuts. Mmm... Other than that, the shop has a nice array of cheeses, high quality fresh produce, lovely snacks and ingredients that you just can't get at a Dutch store and also a lot of different pasta's, pulses and sweets. The only thing I can't quite figure out is why the store is called Perse Polis and it says to be a Persian grocery store. My dad being a chatty Cathy of course knows his vendors and these guys are Iranian! Oh well, I'm not sure it's even a mystery that I want to solve. ;)
