This is Cincinnati chili and some don't like it but I think it's great. The Coney dogs are the way to experience it!! Loaded with tons of shredded cheese, don't sleep on their hot sauce it backs some heat! Always great service, they prepare it in front of you and it has an old school nostalgia to it. Skyline chili is another spot that's been around for Ions. if you are craving an over the top Hot dog with all this fixings this is your place. the chili is not like ordinary Chili it has a what taste to me like cinnamon added, so it makes it different from anything I ever tasted. I took my niece who never ate here before, and she was obsessed. They could best be described as shoestring. They're crispy, always fresh & not overly salted. Be sure to get some cheese (or chili & cheese) on top also. CHILI CHAMPION ? My wife has been talking about this restaurant called Skyline Chili off University Drive for several weeks. We finally drove to the area to take a crack at it. Me being a self proclaimed Chili King and legit eight time chili champion of South East Florida, my taste buds for chili are somewhat biased, but still open minded. I parked in the plaza and walk into the end bay. [[HIGHLIGHT]]At first sight, it felt like a cool retro 70's diner with a huge stainless steel flat grill displaying a line of sizzling weenies - which were later identified as a perfect mixture of beef, turkey and pork.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were greeted by the server and other staff members including the owner, Big Tony, who chatted with us in depth about his thirty-eight year old chili business - this was my kind of talk. We told him that this was our first time at Skyline, which he seemed shocked but elated that we were here to try the famous chili. We ordered a small tub of chili to-go for $10.50. As we sat at the comfortable counter awaiting our to-go order, Tony places two small bowls of "5-Way Chili" in front of us and told us to try it - I was excited and of course did not complain. The bowl comprised of chili, cheddar cheese, spaghetti, onions and beans. The scent emanating off the warm bowl was super inviting. Tony tells me to dab a little spicy & tangy hot sauce onto the chili, which I did from a clear tube. I had my first spoonful which felt like fireworks erupted in my mouth. I immediately tasted every ingredient perfectly blended together to make that first bite unforgetable. Ok, yes the chili was fresh and tasty but what the hell was in the sauce that surely enhanced everything in that bowl, I needed and wanted to know right now. Tony drops a 6oz bottle of hot sauce on the counter in front of me and the label says, "Skyline Chili", AH its your sauce.... Now, Ive tasted my fair share of chili over the years, but this chili was top notch and will be a difficult blend to dismantle in a chili cookoff event. He stated he has been here for 38 years along with his wife, who was not there that day. As we waited for our chili to go (about $10) we sat at the bar where he immediately placed two small bowls of "five way chili." Spaghetti, chili, beans, cheddar cheese, and onions. He stated that this was his best seller. It was amazing!!! I couldn't wait to get home and eat more, which I had for dinner. They make their own delicious hot sauce, which I didn't need, but my hubby loved. This small out of my way place is usually a treat for me when I get it. Service is very friendly as they greet you when you come in. They are quick with refills of the large drinks and give you oyster crackers and peppermint patties with your check. The chili at first had a very strong cinnamon taste but then I started craving the taste. It's all on a bed of spaghetti noodles. A mountain of cheese. Add the hot sauce to round it out. I really liked the cheese coney and funnel fries. They were very generous with the powdered sugar on the fries! I had them all at once even though I was trying to save some for later. There are two large areas for dining in. One area has a lot of college and university signage, which I thought was unique. I didn't like the chili cheese sandwich. I'm particular about food texture so I didn't enjoy the sogginess. I also thought it would have been a hit dog with chili topping and cheese but that was on me for assuming. Another thing I noticed was a random $1 charge for tax on my receipt, which was not mentioned anywhere. I also had to ask for a receipt and the cashier seemed reluctant to provide it. There's always pasta under the chili. It's a certain sort of chili I grew up with, so it takes me back. The chili itself has a bit of sweetness or something to it. It isn't spicy, but it's delicious. The best thing about this place though, is the service. The same people are always working. A lot of people who are belly up to the dining counter know each other, and the employees. I received a coupon in the mail for one free Skyline classic "Cheese Coney" with the purchase of a beverage. Their original way to serve up a hot dog consists of a specially made hot dog in a steamed bun topped with mustard, covered with their original secret-recipe chili, diced onions, and a mound of shredded cheddar cheese. So, I decided to use the coupon and finally try this restaurant after residing in South Florida and passing their now closed location on U.S. 1 in Fort Lauderdale for over twenty years, along with their location in Sunrise, FL. It was a Thursday afternoon around 1PM and the place was packed! There's plenty of tables, with table service, but I chose to sit at the counter, which seats about ten people. I was immediately greeted with a smile, informed the employee I had never been there, and had a coupon. So, I ordered one the original way, along with a Diet Pepsi. The hotdogs and other menu items are prepared right in front of their customers, with the hot dogs lined up on the grill, a giant tub of shredded cheese, a vat of chili and all the other ingredients they use. The hotdog was served to me hot and fresh in literally less than thirty seconds, and I devoured it just as quickly! All the components worked GREAT together, and it was delicious. The only downside is that their hotdogs are small. I guess that's why I saw people ordering two and three at a time. But to be honest, after seeing the calorie count and having recently lost 22lbs, I stuck with having just the one even though I think I could've easily enjoyed three! I'll definitely be back, as it was a tasty treat! If I remember correctly, they also do something with spaghetti, but I don't remember if it was chili on the spaghetti, and possibly a hot dog, but whatever it was, there were plenty of people ordering that too! That's when I discovered the CONEY DOGS! They're very small little hot dogs on equally small, soft buns. With a little mustard, chopped onion, Chilli and way too much shredded cheese. They are extraordinarily good. In fact I was immediately hooked. The place is comfortable inside. A four way had either chopped onions or beans. A five way had both. I got the five way. The chili is unique because it has hints of cinnamon, clove and maybe allspice. While that sounds like the start of a pumpkin spice latte, it is subtle and goes perfectly with everything! They even include a bag of oyster crackers to top this heaping plate!
