Really great experience!…read more I have become a bit of a barbering nomad with no real regular place I go month to month so when I saw The Urban Barbers had opened on the Newtownards I thought I would give it a go. First up, let's talk about the decor. You'll immediately notice the awesome 'urban' murals on the the walls - Biggie and Tupac dominate the landscape. They also have snap back caps hanging on the walls and a flat screen showing all the latest UFC. It's a real mans paradise! Haircut wise it's great, the owner/barber is traditional with a modern twist and he seems to be able to do any style imaginable. They accept walk ins but if you're getting a design done it's best to book ahead. I walked in and was in the chair less than a minute after walking in! The cut itself was neat and tidy and only took around 20 minutes - perfect for your lunch break. My hair cost £9 which is a snip in the current climate! The owner told me of their ambitious plans to make The Urban Barbers somewhat of a man sanctuary offering a whole range of male treatments including the dreaded nose wax! Popped in at about 10am and the lonely barber told me that I needed an appointment - yep it's one of those barbers - no walk ins! So I went and perched myself at Starbuck and called to see if they had any appointments available and luckily they did - not sure why I couldn't do this when I walked in, but hey, rules are rules I suppose. Anyway I managed to get an appointment for 11:30am and the female barber was great - I explained I had my hair chopped a few weeks back and I just wanted a wee trim. She obliged and cut it perfectly, even stopping intermittently to ask me was it looking ok - I like this as often I just keep quite and let them work away and then I get up out of the chair hating how my ginger quiff looks and wishing I had stopped them, but it's all too awkward. Anyway I was in and out in 20 minutes, no waiting around due to the appointment process and I was only charger £11 which is a snip (get it? Snip?).

It was a soaking wet day (as days often are in this city of rain) and I had finally had enough of a mop of hair that any number of wax and gel products had failed to style. I'm still not sure of her name but the barber who generally cuts my mop is always spot on. Cheery and chatty, without being overly talkative about topics so banal you want the world to implode. Quick and efficient. It's always what I wanted. I can't stand the process of the actual haircut, but when it's complete there is always a sigh of relief. Granted, this is certainly not the cheapest place to go in the city centre area, and there are certainly much more 'old school' barbers charging significantly less, but I think it's worth it. £11.50 for a trim, steep? No 1 son has the most oddly thick tufty hair you've ever seen so taming it isn't easy but the lovely Spanish lady who cut it did a really good job. She happily put up with his grumpy monosyllabic conversation and valiantly worked round his nodding head when he almost fell asleep. A kids cut cost £9.95 which isn't the cheapest I've paid but better that than getting a one style suits all job done in the barbers for a few pounds less. The interior of the salon is absolutely gorgeousand I was particularly impressed by the original oil paintings on the walls. Whoever did the interior design really knows what they're about. Busy as usual when I arrived but with 4 barbers working, it's not long till I'm in the chair. I may have alluded before that I'm not 'hip' or 'trendy'. It's certainly the case with hairstyles too, but Sean was quick to give me some advice and selected a cut which would be easy for me to maintain. It's important to say what an impact a good haircut can have. That little boost of self esteem can help make a good day become a great day, and with an added bonus of having some craic while being attended to. I look forward to calling in again, perhaps next time I'll try a Turkish shave. Who knows!!

This shop is located directly opposite Union Street Bar meaning you can also have a spot of pub grub while your down there. Oh and they offer a range of services such as waxing, threading etc. Parking is available from 60p per hour in the public car park only 100 meters away.
