    Chili, slaw, and mustard
    John C.

Visited Skid's during COVID time so I placed an order curbside and took lunch to go. The woman who took my order was friendly and the food was ready quickly. The menu is large but I knew what I was there for. I ordered a hot dog with chili, slaw, and mustard and an order of tater tots. The hot dog was good the chili was a little sweet which I liked. The tater tots were great. Very crispy. All in all, very good. I look forward to returning. It's an easy visit off the highway for those passing through Burlington on 40.

It was pretty confusing. I went up the counter and told them I was dining in and wanted to see the menu. There's one old one taped to the pay table. Several minutes later I'm told to take a seat and someone would take my order. Several minutes pass and I see all sorts of people passing by. None said a word to me. Then a lady asks if I'm waiting to pick up and I told her I was dining in. The menu itself is pretty basic. I def misread some things. I told her I wanted a cheese steak and she said they have cheese steak hoagies. I also ordered a plain burger. Can't expect much for $2.35 so I was going with the flow to see if the specialty burgers would be worth ordering. The food came and I was not impressed. I got a very tiny burger and a pretty basic store-bought bun. The cheese steak was a smash burger with American cheese. It was not a classic cheesesteak but a steakish burger with cheese. It came with a plate full of fries. Everything came out pretty lukewarm and without any type of seasoning so I doused my food in catch-up and hot sauce. I was starving this point, so I ate when I could and pretty much left the buns. The tea was super strong. I would go for a soda next time. I got unsweetened, so it seemed more like an afterthought drink than something freshly prepared. I was not expecting a lot based on the prices, but it's not anywhere I would go again. Service was pretty much not there. The server spent more time with other customers. I did not even get as much as a smile from her. It was hard to distinguish, who was working and who was a customer because everyone was walking back-and-forth. The man at the register seemed friendly enough. Not once was I asked how the meal was. I don't think I would go back. There was nothing special about the food or ambiance. Had the service been good then I might have tried again. The place wasn't exactly clean but it wasn't terrible. People were standing are around and could have tied it up in between customers instead of playing on their phones. The ice machine had a big sign on it that said keep closed, but it was open right by a door. You can see the ice melting. Not a place for me. The search for a good cheesesteak and burger continues

This place has been around forever, it seems, started by the Skidmore Family back in the 50's, I guess. Nothing fancy here, just a Hot Dog/Hamburger joint with a few plates, a variety of sandwiches, salads, and even Spaghetti. The interior is worn and tired looking, but the place is clean. I'd stick to the sandwiches - they are generally good, generally a nice value. The Cheeseburger ($2.20) is a very good cafe style burger, meaning it is smaller than some burger. The taste of the one here is nice. The Hot Dog is really, really good here, and a real bargin at $1.69. This is a classic Southern Chili Dog, with a red weiner, great tasting chili, and a gooey bun. The Chopped BBQ Sandwich ($3.50) is nice, though definitely not cooked in house. It probably is Hursey BBQ's commercial product - ironic, since Hursey's Restaurant is right across th street, literally. The Fish Sandwich ($2.99) is not a memorable taste of the ocean, and I'd pass. Most of their sandwches are offered in a basket, which simply adds FFs. I'd pass on those as well, they are pretty bad. The single Hot Dog Basket goes for $2.69, which means you're paying a $1 for some really bad fries. The Grilled Cheese ($1.95) is good, but then again, it is hard to screw that sandwich up. We'll stop in again.

3 ate for $29.72 before tip. The "Skids Special Cheeseburger" plate ALL THE WAY is what you need to order. Great service and we all left stuffed.

2 dog All the Way (ATW) basket today which is all I come here for. The dogs are red and and the toppings are appropriate and as expected. They are portioned just right not to make a mess. The bun is very softy (steamed) and the slaw has a little sweetness to it that goes well with the bite of the onions. The Pepsi is served on the crumbled style ice which is best to me over cubes (wow, I reviewed on ice ) in styrofoam cups :( I am a fan of crinkle cut fries since my parents raised me in a bowling alley. But I have to say that these fries are pretty crappy; meaty, yes as they should be, but mushy as they should not be. I load them with ketchup to ease the pain. I think it's $6 well spent. The decor is dated, in this case that's cool. Some music instead of the 19" tv filling my ear with talk shows would be much better. This is a place that I like even with its shortcomings. I will always come back.

Great soups and sandwiches. The decor is a fun mix of antique railroad memorabilia. Locally owned -…read morewhich is always a plus in my book and the main reason I use yelp - so I support local businesses and not faceless corporations, but this is a spot I have frequented since my kids were little. They loved the train memorabilia and they ate things like tomato bisque (delicious!!) with a half a sweet lady (grilled turkey, cheese and apricot preserves) in the winter and a sweet lady and water melon in summer. They always have fruit on the menu as a side dish option, fresh if they can get it in season, canned if not. My kids were excited to pick one of the trains off the shelf by the front door to play with for a moment before their lunch arrived. Since the toys were a little sticky from years of play, it taught them to wash their hands before eating and to put borrowed toys away, neatly and I had a rule that they could pick a train to play with until their meals were ready and then they put the trains away and washed their hands and ate. On a recent visit, a very elderly man who moved very slowly left his cane at his table (closest to the pickup window) and came to claim the wrong order. The young man making sandwiches and assembling final orders politely asked him to double check his order number and got the order to the right customers. While the elderly gentleman made his way back to the table to check his order number, the kitchen staff member grabbed the right order, ran through the kitchen to the dining room, and met the man at his table with his correct order. The cook covered a good distance while the customer made it 6-8 feet. The elderly man was impressed with the service and happily sat down and ate his meal, rather than being embarrassed by forgetting his order number.

Even asked the register girl if she preferred we take it to go- she said it was fine to dine in. We sat down and as this mgr lady was putting other guests food in the window, she yelled to the cashier "if anyone else comes in tell them the kitchen is closed, should have been 20 mins ago"(which would have been an hour before closing time lol) and looked right at us. Super unprofessional comment- and icing on the cake... when our food was ready and my husband went to the counter to pick it up, the other lady in the kitchen said "I should have just packed that one to go". If you want to be done at 2:30- then don't have your business hours open till 3. Do yourself a favor and walk 20 feet down the sidewalk to Mikes Deli- same boards head meat and no one will talk shit about you in front of your face.

I was excited but not surprised because they normally have really good deals and random sales. Well on this occasion I go to pay for them and the lady at the register say this is a really good deal. The lady behind her (older lady) say what and the lady who is assisting me said well I am not sure this is right. The older lady walk over and say not this isn't. She said the should be the price of the legs not wings. She then took all the wings out of my cart and said he can't have them. Called someone from the back gave them the wings and said "he trying to get them for the price of legs. This isn't right take them back." She never told me the price they should of been and never gave me an opportunity to pay the correct price. I asked for the right price and she yelled "2.99 but he should have known that wasn't the right price. ". Referring to me as if I put the price on the meat. I am now debating if I would return to this location. I felt embarrassed and if they felt I was trying to still t from them. I rushed out after paying for the rest of my items yet to return.

I stopped here because I was hungry and wanted to take a break from all the running around. Plus I could have a cheeseburger and a beer, but of course that had nothing to do with it. There were two gentlemen working at the time both very polite. Asked if I could have chili on a double cheeseburger and I was told I absolutely could and asked what else I wanted. So I got my cheeseburger with fries and a beer. I was the only person in there but it was also a weekday in the middle of the day. They brought my food to me and I got to sit down and enjoy it while watching the Addams family on television. It was pretty relaxing actually. The place is spotless, brightly lit, and the tables have lots of space between them which is really nice. The classic TV was also nice. I'm really glad they didn't have news or sports on. Lurch and Thing are a lot more entertaining. Anytime I'm in this area I'm going to look for a reason to stop here. I highly recommend this place.
