While we were there, one woman was gleefully surveying the book offerings of a really niche category of interest and was fretting over which books to get because she wanted them all. Much more than your average used book store! The books are reasonably priced, but the kicker is that the proprietor is old school and only accepts cash or checks. We didn't have enough cash on hand, so I sadly put my two book choices back on the shelves. The proprietor didn't greet us at all, just sat behind his desk and read the paper, and gruffly handling transactions. Normally I'd knock a shop for that, but it's just part of the charm. The other major downside is that it's up a big flight of stairs in a building with no elevator, and it's not air conditioned, so it can get very hot in the summer. Worth stopping in, but hit up the ATM first.

You'll find this inside the Rock City Cafe in the back area, though mind you the cafe opens before the bookstore does. They had a good variety of genres as well as used and new books. Any book lover could definitely find a hidden gem here during their browsing. Prices seemed good including a rack outside marked as on sale books. A perfect idea to open this bookshop in the same building as the cafe. Browse and find that next book you want to read before enjoying a coffee and breakfast or lunch. Worth a visit!

First time visiting this Sherman's location, on a busy Sunday summer day. Firstly I will say…read morealthough we did not grab anything at the cafe it was a great touch to see they have one. Like all the Sherman locations my wife and I have visited they are not just simply a bookstore. They have a wide variety of souvenirs and other goodies you may want to buy. Book wise they have a good variety of new and popular along with classics and organize them neatly in well marked areas by genre with some Maine focused book areas even. During our visit it was very busy and my wife found a couple books that piqued her interest. I do think due to how much of the area is touristy and distance from me I likely wouldn't seek this particular location out again. Much closer locations with better overall set up. Nothing outright negative about this one besides some areas really lacking space for a busy store making it hard to move. Glad to have now visited this one! If you are visiting from away visit here and check out one of the locations of Maine's oldest bookstores, add it to your list. Some other great shops and good spots to eat nearby.

Not only is the - for lack of a better explanation - flow better, they seem to be better maximising their shelf space, and it's a more inviting place to spend time in (fairy lights! comfy chairs! an absolutely incredible playlist!). It's the kind of neighborhood bookshop that feels magical. Like, don't come here looking for a particular book; let the right book come to you when you're perusing. You'll know it when you see it. Or, okay, come here for something specific; it seems like the staff is more than accommodating if you need to special order something they don't have. I also watched them help a customer wrap something that was a gift, not mind at all that someone was just sitting on the floor reading, and welcome every single person who walked in the door. If you love books and you're in the area, stop by. If you love books and you're not in the area, this is still a destination bookstore visit in Maine.

It's exterior was very inviting so I decided to head in and check it out. Fiction is a modest bookstore - I wouldn't say they have the largest selection of books, but there's enough to have a good browse session and perhaps pick one up for yourself. In addition, they sell a few non-book items such as stationary, cards, stickers, and some random tchotchkes. The aesthetics were a standout for me - the layout and decor were top notch; I could tell the owner put a lot of love into this place. I am admittedly not the biggest reader, but did pick up some stickers, a card, and a lucky Maine blueberry (ooh!). All the while, I had some wonderful conversation with the staff - this really made my time here memorable. Overall, I had a great experience at Fiction. While you may find yourself in Wiscasset for the lobster rolls, do not sleep on this bookshop - definitely worth a stop in.
