I spoke with multiple staff members over several months as I searched for the right kayak. They were all very knowledgeable and forthright about the pros and cons of the kayaks they sell, and I ultimately reserved one for delivery several months later. Unprompted, they proactively contacted me a week ahead of the delivery date to make final arrangements, offered to prepare the kayak with the accessories I bought (no charge), and then delivered it at exactly the time and (hard to find and reach) location we agreed on. That's when Chris went way above and beyond, spending at least an hour going over everything with me, and helping carry the kayak and gear from our driveway to the water (two round trips of over 900 ft each way). I did not explain or ask for any of that in advance, nor was there any extra charge. Just that good old fashioned "let me help" attitude so rare these days. This is a find amid the big-boxes that dominate in this part of Bangor. The staff knows their stuff. I brought in a kids bike that was a piece of *$%, and the bike guys took their time with it and got it right as though it was an $800 bike. When my wife and I first met, up until about 8 years ago, she used to complain that all I wanted to do was go to Best Buy. Now she complains that all I want to do is go to Ski Rack Sports. I absolutely love this place. I have been going here since I bought our first pairs of skis in 2014. Since then I have rented snowboard equipment for my son every season as well as purchasing snowboard boots for myself, upgraded skis, four bikes (a fat tire bike, a full-suspension mountain bike, a kids bike and a jr. bike) and in addition they assembled my road racing bike. Their spring tune-up special for bikes is inexpensive and their bike repair persons are professional and knowledgeable. This is THE place to buy ski equipment and anything related to cycling. I haven't purchased any kayaking stuff, but if I was interested in purchasing it, I would definitely buy it here. The owner, Pete is just a wonderful guy, fully appreciates our business and treats us like VIPs when we come into rent/buy things. We know most of the guys that work there. Prices are competitive and beats shopping for this stuff online since you can try things on and ride around on bikes before you buy them. Even their clothes - hats, jackets, etc. are excellent and reasonably priced. Also, they offer consignment for used gear (they sold my ElliptiGo and a pair of ski boots) and is a spectacular deal - you get to keep 80% of the sale if you take store credit (which I'll always use.) If you take cash, you get 60%, still a great deal for not having to do any of the selling yourself. If you're looking for any sort of outdoor gear, this is the place to buy it. Unforgivably terrible service: On a beautiful Saturday morning, I called to see if we could afford a Thule storage unit for our VW. The person answering the phone told me it was simple, and that I only needed to buy a $75 crossbar and that the units started at $150. We wasted an entire day -- with a newborn -- driving from Northern Maine to the store, only to find out that the quotes we were given had been totally inaccurate. The unit was going to end up costing us upwards of $1,000. To add insult to injury, the staffer helping us had no sympathy. Instead, he acted like we made up the morning phone call. I can personally tell you that the level of service, kindness, and consideration that the guys at Ski Rack Sports gave my family is beyond anything I've seen. I would rather not get into the details, but suffice it to say that they bent over backwards to assist with an issue beyond anyone's control and really made an incredibly positive impression. Great Guys. I live in California and ordered a new bike from them through a MTB forum classified I read. The bike showed up on time and was exactly what was promised. They did a great job packing it up and it survived the cross country trek perfectly and was easy to put back together out of the box. Great and not so great at the same time.... I've personally shopped here for many years, usually in the winter for snowboarding goods. Although at the onset of the season they have a lot of stuff from all the top brands, if you show up after that first couple weeks, its slim pickings. After-season sales and last year equipment sales are definitely worth hunting around for as I've found some great deals (50% off Mtn. Hardwear shell!). However, if you need help finding something you have a 50/50 chance of getting an associate who loves their job and will spend as much time as needed to get you that perfect piece, or one that will reluctantly and rather condescendingly point out one or two things. I went in with a friend of mine that wanted an Audex jacket. Although 25 and wearing street clothes he is a business owner and quite well off. Guy behind the counter took one look at him and simply said he wouldn't be able to afford it and went back to the computer! Dont get me wrong, these people have tremendous knowledge of their specialty sport, but talking down to people certainly doesn't stoke sales. Would be five stars if they make a concerted effort to retrain the staff to provide better customer interaction and establish some continuity of service. If that happens, Ski Rack will be the ONLY place I shop. If not.....Ill continue to use them for trying things on before I buy from Backcountry.com! read more
