Going uphill there is a good sized playground, tennis courts, and basketball courts (admittedly often overgrown). From the playground to the courts the park road is blocked to vehicle traffic. On the upper area is an outdoor community pool, a parking lot, and an outdoor gym set up. Then there's also blocked off lower and upper roads encircling a hill and a small field, which look so quaint I always picture Bilbo Baggins living there. The views of the city the pool area and the top field are magnificent, and benches invite you to stay for a while to enjoy it (or maybe catch your breath from walking there). Schiller has two access points to park by car (Farmer St- lower, Oak St- upper) and plenty of access by foot. I've spent many many visits exploring the different paths of Schiller. It's a park which feels very much at the center of it's community, a touch rough on some edges, but very beautiful.

We wanted to go down by the play equipment, but the road is closed off the vehicles. We were able to leave the park and drive around the corner and park in a lower parking lot which is near the baseball diamond. There was one lone table near a building called the recreation center, and it was in a little gazebo. Kids enjoyed the play equipment. It must have been installed or upgraded very recently as it was very new 8/2015. There are two areas one for smaller kids 2-5 and one for larger kids 5-12. There is one small table in each of the kids areas which has a cover and provides shade during the hot summer months when kids are out playing.

My buddy and I found a good excuse in the Clay Central Park disc golf course. It offered a variety of enjoyable play, with only minor navigation and mud issues. The course meanders over nearly the entire perimeter of the park and offers a variety of holes. We played over long fairways, and through tight, forested trails. The tees are well maintained concrete starting strips, with clear course signage. It's early in the season, so many parts of the course were muddy and wet. Also, there wasn't clear signage from the hole/basket to the next tee. We got ourselves lost a few times (and played one hole out of order once). Overall, I had a lot of fun trying disc golf for the first time! And this course was a great way to do it.

It took me a minute to wrap my head around that this used to be where the canal ran through the…read morecity. I had to pull up pictures to make it make sense. When I was able to put it into perspective I understood. This is an overall nice outdoor gathering area. That I am sure is used throughout the year for many things. While I was there, it was just a normal day. The square houses the Soldiers and Sailors Monument which was dedicated in 1911. By 1917 the canal was filled in and expanded the square. As the years go on there are renovations and additions to make the square more usable. The one section you should check out is the section that the Jerry Rescue monument is situated. This depicts William "Jerry" Henry, a recently freed slave being rescued from the nearby jail by townsfolk. This was in defiance of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Breaking into the jail they helped Jerry to escape and make his was to Canada, and freedom.

We found this walk very enjoyable and the path was well kept with nice scenery. We are going back to walk the other way from Spencer to Destiny mall next week.
