But after a journey that…read morespanned the width of the North American continent, I've realized that the most important "ingredient" in Port Chilkoot Distillery's, specifically their bourbon isn't the food or the grain, it's the character of Heather and David. Finding a truly non-sourced, grain-to-glass bourbon is a challenge anywhere, but in Alaska, it's a flat-out rarity. It isn't a state known for bourbon, and a local release like this only happens about once every three years. For a long time, the Alaska slot on my 50 state and Washington DC non-sourced bourbon quest felt like a dead end...logistically impossible and incredibly scarce. It honestly felt like a journey that wasn't meant to be finished until I sent a shot-in-the-dark email to Heather. That one message changed everything. Instead of a generic "out of stock" reply, I found two people who actually cared enough about the integrity of my project. Heather and David didn't just point me to a website; they personally stepped in to shepherd a rare, signed Boatwright Single Barrel Bourbon from Haines all the way to Anchorage to make sure it could get to me in Ohio. If they're willing to go to those lengths for someone they've never met, it says everything you need to know about how they run their distillery. They aren't just making spirits; they're running a class act. These bottles are now a centerpiece for me, not just because of the "once-in-three-years" rarity, but because of the people who helped me lock down one of the toughest states on the map. He was quick and efficient in taking photos for everyone on the bus at each of the stops. We were a bit cautious of his driving. I understand he is quite familiar with this drive, but given the weather and often poor visibility we had on the drive, and the size of the bus, he seemed to be driving a bit fast, even passing other buses on the drive. Our tour stopped at the Yukon sign where we actually had some clear skies we could see the mountains in the background. On our return, we stopped at a rural dog sled training camp. We visited the puppies and got to play with them. We were here for almost 2 hours. It felt like our time here was never ending. It would've been nice if the owner came over to say "hi" and talk a bit about dog sledding and the competitions she competes in. Some in our tour group paid extra to take a dog sled ride which was basically the dogs hooked up to a large golf cart with everyone piled into the cart. Not impressive, glad we didn't do it. But we had to wait around for those that did pay for that extra feature to get their ride so we were there for almost 2 hours. It felt like our time here was never ending. To sum up our tour, we spent 4 hours in a bus driving through the Yukon range and seeing the puppies. Not sure if we would do this again if we return.

Enjoyed our ziplining experience…read more We had Shaelynn and another female guide. (sadly i can't remember her name) Was feeling a little nervous about ziplining. Have done 3 different locations in the past but everyone has been run differently and has had different safety standards. they did a good job in making me feel comfortable about going again though. The guides were friendly and knowledgable. They made the experience from start to finish a good time. Would recommend them for the future if you are going to the area.

Wilderness ATV excursion in Haines…read more Doreen and Annie were our guides. WOW, so much fun, had a group of 12. (6 couples) Kawasaki 800 4 seat UTV's and back country trails. Had a small snack lunch in the end. We had phenomenal views, and great experience. Highly recommended.

Alaska Fjordlines ferry from Juneau to Skagway was one of the most pleasant cruises of my three…read moremonth tenure in Alaska. Everybody was super friendly and Captain George was exceptional , slowed down and stopped for all major animal sightings (whales , puffins, sea otters) , had incredibly detailed explanations on the history of the Fjords. Alexa (From Temple University ) was the deckhand extraordinaire ( also stepped in for the lunch server and doubled as an office hand in Haines and helped me with my booking ) , she was also incredibly knowledgeable and friendly of all aspects of the Fjords. This cruise in a whole day cruise, I just did the return leg, very highly recommend the whole cruise (both legs) . Never had a better cruise.
