This was one of the most unacceptable rental car experiences I've had, and it raises serious concerns about Sixt's safety standards and integrity as a company. I rented a vehicle from the LaGuardia Airport location and was given a Mazda CX-70 with rear tires that were essentially bald--in the middle of winter in New York. This isn't a minor oversight. This is basic, fundamental vehicle safety. Anyone who understands driving knows that worn tires in winter conditions significantly increase the risk of losing control of the vehicle. When I contacted Sixt, their response was just as concerning as the condition of the car. I was told I could either wait over four hours for a replacement vehicle or replace the tires myself. Think about that--rather than ensuring their fleet is properly maintained, they were willing to put the burden on the customer to fix their mistake. That alone tells you everything about their operational standards. Despite clearly raising a legitimate safety issue, Sixt refused to take meaningful responsibility. Their solution? A €15 voucher--something that is not only trivial, but essentially useless to a U.S.-based customer. Offering that in response to a safety concern is not just inadequate, it's insulting. New York has minimum tire tread requirements for a reason. Based on the condition of the tires I was given, it's hard to believe this vehicle should have been on the road at all, let alone rented out to a customer. They gave us a car that was making so much noise the minute we drove away we didn't even make it up the block before we returned. Where do I begin? My experience with SIXT was an absolute nightmare from start to finish. First, I got a flat tire during my rental. When I contacted SIXT for roadside assistance, the situation was handled poorly, and I was left to arrange towing on my own -- an expense SIXT later refused to reimburse. To make matters worse, a SIXT representative instructed me by phone to return the vehicle to a different location (LaGuardia). I followed their instructions exactly -- only to be charged a one-way drop-off fee. When I disputed this, SIXT acknowledged in their own written response that their representative had directed me to that location. Despite this admission, they refused to waive the fee in full, offering only a 50% discount as a "goodwill gesture." I was also unable to complete a vehicle exchange by my contracted return date due to SIXT's failure to accommodate the swap -- an issue they acknowledged but offered no resolution for. After multiple rounds of back-and-forth, SIXT issued a final denial on all my requests. Spoke to the hotline and was PROMISED a call right away. Also submitted a lost and found report and a general report. STAY AWAY! ZERO STARS I went to Florida in March and decided to rent from SIXT. What a mistake. Not only did I get service with a bad attitude at the counter but the car made noise going over 50 mph. BLUF: I had a good car rental experience with Sixt. I wanted to rent a car to take visiting family to places not easily reachable by mass transit. I looked at a few of the major travel / car rental sites, but they were unhelpful for a few reasons: 1. Location-based Pricing: Some sites priced vehicles more expensively the closer they were to me, and more affordably the further away they were from me. 2. Operating Hours: Some places were closed when I wanted to pick up the vehicle -- after regular business hours (i.e., after 5 PM). 3. Ambiguity: Some sites seemed to offer the same vehicles at lower prices, but those vehicles were listed with a lower seating capacity. I didn't want the uncertainty of having the rental company substitute a car with a fewer seats at the last minute. Sixt is Germany's largest car rental company. I chose Sixt because they offered new cars with a rated seven-seat capacity at a reasonable price; and were open when I was available. Sixt's "Quick Check-In" (advance check-in) feature did not work for me. Sixt did not have the vehicle class I reserved (Volkswagen Atlas or equivalent) at the time I used "Quick Check-In", without an up-charge. I wanted a seven-seater, but the Quick Check-In website only offered a five-seat car for no extra charge, eight-seat cars for $24 to $39 more per day, or luxury seven-seat cars for $69 more per day. I mentioned this problem at check-in, and the staff gave me a Toyota Highlander at no extra charge. The Toyota Highlander had under 1,800 miles driven on it, a new car smell, was very clean, and handled very well. I really liked the Apple CarPlay integration in the vehicle. The vehicle had its own E-Z Pass (for toll payment) installed, but no place to mount your own. Be mindful of keeping your E-Z Pass pressed on the window when passing under cashless tolling arrays. Other: - You'll receive an email when you pick up the vehicle, listing known damage to the vehicle. Review that email and conduct on your inspection to verify there isn't additional damage before driving off the rental lot. Take pictures and video of your inspection. - English fluency is recommended. Sixt does not utilize interpretation / translation services (like Language Line), and I witnessed another customer and service representative having difficulty as a result. Google / Apple Translate are inadequate substitutes because they may be unable to handle commonly-used idioms and phrases. - There is a $100 cancellation fee up to 24 hours before the reservation. There is a $200 cancellation fee within 24 hours of the reservation. Sixt does not offer refunds after the scheduled pick-up time. I see that this company already has horrible reviews, but I just have to add my own here as well I rented a car with them for 2 weeks, but mid-way through my rental, the company called and said they thought they had an incorrect license plate on my rental agreement. I gave them the correct license plate and they said everything was updated and would be fine. What ended up happening is that I was charged the tolls that were connected with the incorrect license plate - someone else's tolls. I'd stay away from them. They manipulate you on pricing and will try and fleece with with damage claims. I rented a car with them, had it for two days, didn't have anything happen, and when we got it back they were alleging $4k in damage that was a bunch of tiny scratches in different parts of the car, some of which seem like they can just be buffed out. I didn't take pictures, but I am confident that we did not cause $4k in damage that was entirely unknown to us. They seem like a skeezy company. All the horrible reviews are true November 2023 Their customer service and ways to communicate are the worst I've ever experienced. I was charged twice in error and now I've been waiting over a month for $1500 to be returned to me. I've been bounced around from person to person. The supervisors have a choice to answer calls therefore they never do when it's a complaint. There is no way to reach out to their credit card department or accounting department. You're told someone will reach out to take care of the issue and no one ever does. In my eyes They have stolen $1503.64 from me. The worst part is they admit the error, yet I keep getting nowhere when it comes to resolving it. As for disputing the charge it's incredibly difficult. When you sign a contract for s rental car you pretty much give them free rein on your card. Moreover since it's considered a pending charge, there's nothing your bank can do until it is settled which I'm my case has now been over a month. Besides the customer experience they lore you in with these fancy cars and good prices. Sure they have fancy cars but they are FILTHY and beat. Rented from them twice and each car had no gas in it when i picked them up. I returned them both with more gas than received yet was charged $12.99 PER GALLON to refill them. Was also charged a cleaning fee because of a smoke smell. This blew my mind! 1) I don't smoke 2) I had the car washed before I dropped it off and was 10x cleaner than when I picked it up. They will nickle and dime you upon return. Or you can pre pay they or insurance which is $30 a day or more which comes out to doubling the price of the rental. All in all it's a nightmare !!! BEWARE OF SIXT SCAM!!!!!!!! On May 3, 2023, I rented a car from Sixt that had 17 documented damages on the vehicle. I returned the vehicle and went to the airport. After returning home, a few weeks later I was advised via e-mail that 2 of the damages that were documented at the time of rental were being charged to me. I replied to the e-mail attaching the original documentation from the rental agreement with the damages they claimed I incurred. Sixt continues to demand payment for damages that were on the car prior to me renting it. A vehicle with 17 documented damages should never be rented, to begin with. Their claims department, which I have spent a lot of time on hold, and then disconnected. The Claims Dept. does not answer their phone during the hours they say they are open. ROBBED! DO NOT RENT HERE This location is actively violating NYC law and stealing from customers. I returned my car on time and the car was then driven by the employees to a different location and logged in almost 6 hours later. I was subsequently charged for an extra day and spent almost 5 weeks arguing with the corporate office to get the cost refunded. I had to go as far as providing Uber receipts with a time and date showing I left the rental agency when the car was due to be returned. On check-in an employee named A made us wait almost an hour, telling us the car we originally booked was unavailable, and basically forced to upgrade to more expensive car. This was a violation of NYC law and this location has been reported to the BBB and NYC city. See the law below (it is posted inside the business ironically but they blatantly chose to ignore it). Car rental agencies must: Honor all reservations within one half hour after the reserved time at the reserved price, unless the agency told you that the reservation is not guaranteed. Post a sign with the Consumer Protection Law Rule regarding reservations that includes information about how to file a complaint. Give you a car that seats as many passengers and meets your needs, if the reserved car is unavailable. You can file a complaint about a contract dispute with a car rental agency in New York City. read more

I had booked a BMW 3-series MONTHS in advance, only to get a notification on the shuttle bus to the Sixt location that they had changed me to a Mercedes GLC 300. I did not want an SUV, but they weren't able to provide me with any other car without charging me more. After reluctantly taking the GLC, it proceeded to shutter and shake on the highway about 10 miles away, seemed to be some kind of transmission issue. I immediately called the phone number on the pamphlet provided, and it took over 20 minutes to get a hold of someone. Already having limped to my destination, the representative asked if I could bring the car back. I told them I could potentially try to drive it back to the airport 2 days later when I leave, as I was 30 miles away, and they did not offer to bring me a replacement. On the drive back, the car gradually could not keep speed, until it could only limp 35mph on the Northern State. I barely made it back to the Sixt location, where they proceeded to tell me the best they could do was 1/2 off (1 day instead of 2) because I had "driven the vehicle". Lesson learned, don't trust Sixt to deliver with the car they offer online, or even one that's reliable. read more
