On a recent trip to New York I booked a car rental with Avis Budget. Upon my arrival at the desk I was told they had not got a car for me. I was totally shocked as I needed one and it was a holiday weekend and here I was without a car. I tried another Car Rental company with no success. I was talking to another passenger and he told me to try Sixt as he had used them and found them very good. I do a lot of traveling but I had never heard of them. So I got a shuttle to their place of business hoping against all odds that they could help me. I got to the counter and got speaking to a young man called James who told me he wasn't sure if he had a car but he would see what he could do. Fifteen minutes later James came back with a smile on his face and a car for me. I couldn't believe my luck and thanked the heavens for this young man. James was so polite and understanding and went the extra yard to help me that day. I do a lot of traveling and from now on I will use Sixt all the time, I also have told all my friends and coworkers to try Sixt as well. So again thank you James and Sixt for going the extra mile and helping a tired old Irish man. read more

After disembarking from our cruise in Boston this morning, we went directly to the Westin Boston Seaport to pick up our rental car, a Subaru Forester, for the drive home. Despite some traffic along the way, we made it home in a little over five hours. This afternoon, we returned the vehicle to the LaGuardia Airport location. We were initially told that our receipt would be emailed to us, but for some reason, we did not receive it right away. Fortunately, Kathy, who was working behind the counter this afternoon, was very helpful. She assured us not to worry and kindly printed a copy of the receipt to ensure everything was in order. As it turned out, shortly after we left the location, the emailed receipt arrived as promised. Thanks to Kathy's professionalism and excellent customer service, the return process was smooth and stress-free. It was a pleasant experience, and I would gladly return to this location to rent a car again in the future. read more

Cathy V was amazing. After so many issues that I faced after landing at LGA, her compassion, professionalism, kindness, business sense, ability to listen to customer issues and fix it with solutions and her contentedness was very impressive and I was very thankful. What turned out to be a terrible day altogether became so much better because of her. She is an amazing employee and I hope she will be here always and get great treatment for her star employee status. I also like the fact that you're able to scan a QR code for any damages. The car already has so that you don't get blamed for it like other very bad car rental places that are a scam like ACE. read more

Cheap Rental, But Absolutely NOT Worth the Headache -- Stay Away from Sixt I strongly regret renting from Sixt. I had seen the negative reviews before booking, but I decided to give them a chance because in 30+ years, I had never had a bad experience with any rental car company before in the US. I should have listened to the reviews. Our nightmare started the second day after we picked up the car. The car suddenly wouldn't start, leaving us stranded in a remote location. We had to wait THREE HOURS for Sixt to send AAA. Three hours of our vacation were completely wasted because Sixt gave us a car that couldn't even reliably start. But the worst part came afterward. Because the car was in such poor condition, we decided to return it two days early. Before returning the car, we contacted both Sixt and Expedia and specifically asked whether we would receive a refund for the two unused days. We were told yes. After we returned the car, the story completely changed. Sixt told us to contact Expedia. Expedia contacted Sixt while I was on the phone and the representative even sent Sixt the email request they asked for. Then the next day Sixt told Expedia that I needed to contact Sixt to process the refund. When I contacted Sixt, they claimed they had never received Expedia's email and told me that I had paid Expedia, not Sixt so I had to go back talking to Expedia. Back and forth. Again and again. Finally, Expedia arranged a three-way call with Sixt. Only then did a Sixt representative--who refused to give me his name--finally tell me that Sixt would NOT refund the two unused days because the rental had been prepaid. Excuse me? If prepaid rentals are non-refundable, why didn't Sixt tell us that when we called BEFORE returning the car and specifically asked about the refund? Instead, we were told that we would get a refund, only to be told afterward that there would be no refund. Whether this was incompetence, poor communication, or simply an attempt to avoid paying the refund, the result was the same: we lost money and wasted hours dealing with Sixt and Expedia. A rental car company should provide a safe, reliable vehicle and stand behind what its employees tell customers. Sixt failed us on both counts. My advice: Don't be tempted by Sixt's low prices. The money you save isn't worth the risk, inconvenience, and frustration. Sixt clearly doesn't care about its customers or the problems it causes them. 1 star -- I would never rent from Sixt again. read more

This was one of the most unacceptable rental car experiences I've had, and it raises serious concerns about Sixt's safety standards and integrity as a company. I rented a vehicle from the LaGuardia Airport location and was given a Mazda CX-70 with rear tires that were essentially bald--in the middle of winter in New York. This isn't a minor oversight. This is basic, fundamental vehicle safety. Anyone who understands driving knows that worn tires in winter conditions significantly increase the risk of losing control of the vehicle. When I contacted Sixt, their response was just as concerning as the condition of the car. I was told I could either wait over four hours for a replacement vehicle or replace the tires myself. Think about that--rather than ensuring their fleet is properly maintained, they were willing to put the burden on the customer to fix their mistake. That alone tells you everything about their operational standards. Despite clearly raising a legitimate safety issue, Sixt refused to take meaningful responsibility. Their solution? A €15 voucher--something that is not only trivial, but essentially useless to a U.S.-based customer. Offering that in response to a safety concern is not just inadequate, it's insulting. New York has minimum tire tread requirements for a reason. Based on the condition of the tires I was given, it's hard to believe this vehicle should have been on the road at all, let alone rented out to a customer. This experience shows a company that is either unwilling or unable to properly maintain its vehicles, and then avoids accountability when called out. That's not just bad customer service--that's a safety issue. If you rent from Sixt, inspect your vehicle very carefully before leaving the lot. Better yet, consider renting from a company that takes basic vehicle safety seriously. read more

Had to rent a car for 2 weeks and Sixt was recommended by a friend and I had no issues from pick up and drop off at the airport . Made reservation on line , filled out all the info and when I got to LaGuardia airport , the car rental place is nearby along with a bunch of other car rental places . No wait on line , gave gal customer rep whatever she needed to complete the process and outside steps away the kia sportage was waiting for us . Looked at a few of the bad reviews and honestly I didn't have any problems renting a car from Sixt and actually It was a fast and a uneventful process .4.5 stars on my yelp meter . read more

After reading some of the reviews I was hesitant to use this location, but I just returned my car after a 4 day rental and am happy to report there were no issues, from the shuttle at LGA to the counter personnel at the location everyone was courteous and professional, no upsell or nonsense. Two stars because they have free mini waters and the girl in the front desk was nice. No stars for the car or the service itself. They gave us a car that was making so much noise the minute we drove away we didn't even make it up the block before we returned. Then one of the workers (not the front desk lady who helped us) had such a terrible attitude because we asked for the car to be changed. They ended up not having another one of the car we originally rented so we ended up with a smaller one. I wasn't happy and the price wasn't adjusted. I wouldn't use them again. read more

I rented from Sixt having never heard of the company and in retrospect I wish I had picked a more well-known or reputable company to rent a car from. As others have said there is definitely a bait and switch issue with this company, where the type of car you are booking for and the actual car that you get have nothing to do with each other. When I booked online, I rented a " BMW or similar". There is definitely an emphasis on the or portion of that statement. Sixt online portal lets you reserve a car one hour before the pick up and I reserved a BMW SUV. I was instructed to go to a scan station and get my car keys from there. When I arrived at the rental location, I was greeted by Sixt employees who did not let me go to the scan station and instead had me check in at the register and then try to upsell me on extra insurance and Toll passes and other things I didn't need. After firmly telling them I wasn't interested several times they finally gave me a QR code to use the scan machine. When I went to the scan machine to get my keys out, popped out the keys for a Subaru. When I pointed this out to the employees, they said this is all that was available even though I had reserved the BMW not one hour before. When I got to the car lot, I saw no actual high-end cars just a collection of dated Subarus, Toyotas, etc. . There was nothing wrong with the actual car. It was clean and it ran fine and it got me to my destination. So I suppose I shouldn't be that upset. But it sucks to pay for a more premium vehicle and in the end, just overpay for no reason in particular. With that I wouldn't use this company again unless I had no other choice. read more

Where do I begin? My experience with SIXT was an absolute nightmare from start to finish. First, I got a flat tire during my rental. When I contacted SIXT for roadside assistance, the situation was handled poorly, and I was left to arrange towing on my own -- an expense SIXT later refused to reimburse. To make matters worse, a SIXT representative instructed me by phone to return the vehicle to a different location (LaGuardia). I followed their instructions exactly -- only to be charged a one-way drop-off fee. When I disputed this, SIXT acknowledged in their own written response that their representative had directed me to that location. Despite this admission, they refused to waive the fee in full, offering only a 50% discount as a "goodwill gesture." I was also unable to complete a vehicle exchange by my contracted return date due to SIXT's failure to accommodate the swap -- an issue they acknowledged but offered no resolution for. After multiple rounds of back-and-forth, SIXT issued a final denial on all my requests. I have since filed a chargeback with my credit card company and submitted claims with my travel insurance and AAA. SIXT's customer service is unresponsive, their charges are deceptive, and they will not take accountability even when their own staff is at fault. Save yourself the stress and rent elsewhere. read more

Left my wallet on the shuttle and realized 10 min just through security. Tried to call from the airport but you can't get to the branch (that i had just left directly). Spoke to the hotline and was PROMISED a call right away. Also submitted a lost and found report and a general report. TOOK 19 (NINETEEN) DAYS FOR THEM FINALLY RESPOND AND SAY "We are unable to locate your item". Begged for updates or anything along the way. Never got a call back. Of course, they tried to charge me for damage (thankfully was able to prove it was already there). They did that the day after the rental so know they can get a hold of me when they want. read more

STAY AWAY! ZERO STARS I went to Florida in March and decided to rent from SIXT. What a mistake. Not only did I get service with a bad attitude at the counter but the car made noise going over 50 mph. Today I got charged with a $462.00 fee for a scratch. I wish I had read the previous reviews cause it seems this happens a lot at this company. They have multiple complaints as well as a class action lawsuit. I will be filing a complaint in Florida with the CFPB. Do yourself a favor and avoid headaches and stay away from SIXT. read more

My car had a dirty windshield, no washer fluid, low pressure tires, and breaks that can only be described as "groaning." The return attendant attributed the brake problem to the fact that I rented a Jetta. It was not my choice. Regardless, the experience was just OK. The people were nice. Nevertheless, I would avoid this location if at all possible. read more

Love this car rental place! Thank you so much to Hassan and the team at Sixt you guys were amazing. Needed to rent a car to go camping this weekend and they made the experience really easy. Honestly the hardest part was driving in the city lol Before I returned the car, I vacuumed and detailed it to my best ability and filled it up all the way at the Shell 2 minutes away. And guess what people? No extra charges to my rental! How crazy is that, when you take care of a rental and return it better than how you received it, no extra costs get added. If you get charged extra and complain about it I'm guessing there's a good reason for it. Return process was super easy, handed off the keys to a worker in the lot and I was finished checking out. I'll definitely be renting from Sixt again in the future when I want to make a weekend trip outside the city. read more

In an age when customer service is non existent, SIXT had great customer service. I had a few very minor issues, and this location went above and beyond to make sure I was a happy customer. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS SIXT LOCATION! I have been a loyal customer, spending over $2,000+ just days ago, and was treated with absolute disrespect and humiliation when I returned to rent a non-luxury vehicle. If you plan to use a debit card, AVOID THIS PLACE. Their policies are inconsistent, and their staff is unprofessional and rude. * Employees mocked customer complaints aloud while I was present. * One employee insulted me, called me "unqualified," and laughed in my face. * The manager ignored my concerns and instead of addressing the issue, kicked me out. I was left without a rental car, despite spending thousands at this location. This was humiliating and unacceptable. I have photo evidence of the employee involved and will provide it to corporate upon request. Save yourself the stress--GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! read more

BLUF: I had a good car rental experience with Sixt. I wanted to rent a car to take visiting family to places not easily reachable by mass transit. I looked at a few of the major travel / car rental sites, but they were unhelpful for a few reasons: 1. Location-based Pricing: Some sites priced vehicles more expensively the closer they were to me, and more affordably the further away they were from me. 2. Operating Hours: Some places were closed when I wanted to pick up the vehicle -- after regular business hours (i.e., after 5 PM). 3. Ambiguity: Some sites seemed to offer the same vehicles at lower prices, but those vehicles were listed with a lower seating capacity. I didn't want the uncertainty of having the rental company substitute a car with a fewer seats at the last minute. Sixt is Germany's largest car rental company. I chose Sixt because they offered new cars with a rated seven-seat capacity at a reasonable price; and were open when I was available. Sixt's "Quick Check-In" (advance check-in) feature did not work for me. Sixt did not have the vehicle class I reserved (Volkswagen Atlas or equivalent) at the time I used "Quick Check-In", without an up-charge. I wanted a seven-seater, but the Quick Check-In website only offered a five-seat car for no extra charge, eight-seat cars for $24 to $39 more per day, or luxury seven-seat cars for $69 more per day. I mentioned this problem at check-in, and the staff gave me a Toyota Highlander at no extra charge. The Toyota Highlander had under 1,800 miles driven on it, a new car smell, was very clean, and handled very well. I really liked the Apple CarPlay integration in the vehicle. The vehicle had its own E-Z Pass (for toll payment) installed, but no place to mount your own. Be mindful of keeping your E-Z Pass pressed on the window when passing under cashless tolling arrays. Other: - You'll receive an email when you pick up the vehicle, listing known damage to the vehicle. Review that email and conduct on your inspection to verify there isn't additional damage before driving off the rental lot. Take pictures and video of your inspection. - English fluency is recommended. Sixt does not utilize interpretation / translation services (like Language Line), and I witnessed another customer and service representative having difficulty as a result. Google / Apple Translate are inadequate substitutes because they may be unable to handle commonly-used idioms and phrases. - There is a $100 cancellation fee up to 24 hours before the reservation. There is a $200 cancellation fee within 24 hours of the reservation. Sixt does not offer refunds after the scheduled pick-up time. Certain vehicles have a $200 credit card hold. - Learn about rental car classification codes here: https://www.acriss.org/car-codes/ read more

I see that this company already has horrible reviews, but I just have to add my own here as well I rented a car with them for 2 weeks, but mid-way through my rental, the company called and said they thought they had an incorrect license plate on my rental agreement. What ended up happening is that I was charged the tolls that were connected with the incorrect license plate - someone else's tolls. hands down the best rental car company i have ever used. i had been bamboozled and ripped off in the past at other rental car companies, however, sixt, specifically this location (i havent yet been to others) went above and beyond in service, friendliness, quality of vehicles, and pricing. i was taking a short trip to NY (from FL) for a baby shower and needed something nice to get around in. i reserved the full size model via priceline.com. upon landing at LGA, my cousin picked me up and brought me to this location. it is not far from the airport, and although i got a ride, i did see they offer shuttle service to and from LGA as well. brian, the attendant helping me with my rental, really welcomed me on my trip to NY. he offered me an upgraded vehicle at a fair increase, which i was happy with. the car was clean and the tank full. i will no longer use any other rental car company for any of my rental needs !!! seriously. read more

All the horrible reviews are true November 2023 Their customer service and ways to communicate are the worst I've ever experienced. I was charged twice in error and now I've been waiting over a month for $1500 to be returned to me. I've been bounced around from person to person. The supervisors have a choice to answer calls therefore they never do when it's a complaint. There is no way to reach out to their credit card department or accounting department. You're told someone will reach out to take care of the issue and no one ever does. In my eyes They have stolen $1503.64 from me. The worst part is they admit the error, yet I keep getting nowhere when it comes to resolving it. As for disputing the charge it's incredibly difficult. When you sign a contract for s rental car you pretty much give them free rein on your card. Moreover since it's considered a pending charge, there's nothing your bank can do until it is settled which I'm my case has now been over a month. Besides the customer experience they lore you in with these fancy cars and good prices. Sure they have fancy cars but they are FILTHY and beat. Rented from them twice and each car had no gas in it when i picked them up. I returned them both with more gas than received yet was charged $12.99 PER GALLON to refill them. Was also charged a cleaning fee because of a smoke smell. This blew my mind! 1) I don't smoke 2) I had the car washed before I dropped it off and was 10x cleaner than when I picked it up. They will nickle and dime you upon return. Or you can pre pay they or insurance which is $30 a day or more which comes out to doubling the price of the rental. All in all it's a nightmare !!! Stay away!! I much rather rented an econo sh+/ box from a much more reputable place and not have to deal with all the BS that comes from Sixt. read more

BEWARE OF SIXT SCAM!!!!!!!! On May 3, 2023, I rented a car from Sixt that had 17 documented damages on the vehicle. I returned the vehicle and went to the airport. After returning home, a few weeks later I was advised via e-mail that 2 of the damages that were documented at the time of rental were being charged to me. I replied to the e-mail attaching the original documentation from the rental agreement with the damages they claimed I incurred. Sixt continues to demand payment for damages that were on the car prior to me renting it. A vehicle with 17 documented damages should never be rented, to begin with. Their claims department, which I have spent a lot of time on hold, and then disconnected. The Claims Dept. does not answer their phone during the hours they say they are open. ROBBED! DO NOT RENT HERE This location is actively violating NYC law and stealing from customers. I returned my car on time and the car was then driven by the employees to a different location and logged in almost 6 hours later. I was subsequently charged for an extra day and spent almost 5 weeks arguing with the corporate office to get the cost refunded. I had to go as far as providing Uber receipts with a time and date showing I left the rental agency when the car was due to be returned. On check-in an employee named A made us wait almost an hour, telling us the car we originally booked was unavailable, and basically forced to upgrade to more expensive car. This was a violation of NYC law and this location has been reported to the BBB and NYC city. See the law below (it is posted inside the business ironically but they blatantly chose to ignore it). Car rental agencies must: Honor all reservations within one half hour after the reserved time at the reserved price, unless the agency told you that the reservation is not guaranteed. Post a sign with the Consumer Protection Law Rule regarding reservations that includes information about how to file a complaint. Give you a car that seats as many passengers and meets your needs, if the reserved car is unavailable. You can file a complaint about a contract dispute with a car rental agency in New York City. read more

I had booked a BMW 3-series MONTHS in advance, only to get a notification on the shuttle bus to the Sixt location that they had changed me to a Mercedes GLC 300. I did not want an SUV, but they weren't able to provide me with any other car without charging me more. After reluctantly taking the GLC, it proceeded to shutter and shake on the highway about 10 miles away, seemed to be some kind of transmission issue. I immediately called the phone number on the pamphlet provided, and it took over 20 minutes to get a hold of someone. Already having limped to my destination, the representative asked if I could bring the car back. I told them I could potentially try to drive it back to the airport 2 days later when I leave, as I was 30 miles away, and they did not offer to bring me a replacement. On the drive back, the car gradually could not keep speed, until it could only limp 35mph on the Northern State. I barely made it back to the Sixt location, where they proceeded to tell me the best they could do was 1/2 off (1 day instead of 2) because I had "driven the vehicle".
