I booked a rental car through a rental brokerage site which hid the name of the company until all terms were accepted. I believe it was carrentals.com but I confess I don't remember. I'm writing this review in the hopes that people will both avoid SIXT RENTAL DUBLIN like the plague and consider sending their complaint also to the international better bureau service here: http://www.asai.ie/make-a-complaint/make-a-complaint/ and https://econsumer.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/
I declined purchasing insurance when I bought the car service and was charged online in advance in full because I had previously confirmed from my Citibank credit card service that they covered 100% of the insurance I needed as long as I denied coverage on the car rental purchase. At no point did Citi's insurance say "But you will need a letter to prove it" and at no point in the online purchase either through the brokerage site or on Sixt.ie where I had to confirm my purchase (and once again was asked to purchase but had to uncheck the "Buy insurance" box to be sure I was Denying purchasing insurance) say I needed a letter to prove I was covered. 5 years earlier I rented a Sixt car in Spain with an AMEX card and no one said I needed a letter at the pickup counter. But when I got me and my family after a staggering 24 hour journey in which we were moving on sabbatical to Dublin, complete with small kids and 12 suitcases, to the Sixt rental counter at Dublin airport at 6 in the morning, I was denied the ability to use my citi coverage without a letter with my name, my account, and stating I was covered in Ireland. Nor would they refund my rental car money because they said it was the brokerage that had charged me. So I was already paid up for a 3 week rental (pricey) and would lose that money if I went to another car company. Then they said they wouldn't release a car to me unless I bought insurance from them. They agreed to refund it to me if I bought it and if I brought them a letter so I went ahead and bought it on that understanding. Ridiculous but they had me in a corner. Then the "fun" began.
Due to the way Citibank has its insurance dept only open for certain hours and not 24 hours, plus only making 800 numbers available, for whatever reason I wasn't able to access and call these numbers from a Dublin phone. And when I did get through I was able to only do so on Skype. I was eventually able to get a letter out of Citi but when I finally brought it back to the airport the woman said "it's too late- you needed to bring this back within 24 hours of pickup of your car. I still had a week to go of my rental and was shocked as she'd never said that in the beginning. Then she said I'd have to take it up with the head office. She wouldn't give me an address or phone but I finally found it in another part of the city. Drove there. Wasted more time and gas. And was told, nope- you've already used 2 weeks of insurance but we'll give you back the last 5 days worth. I refused and said they are running a real scam. And that I'd take it up with Citi who would surely as a very long time loyal customer help me with this. They haven't! They have basically said that because I signed to accept the insurance it's now out of their hands. I think both these companies are absolutely running a racket as can be witnessed from A TON of complaints on YELP. Thank you YELPERS!! And I feel duped and silly for not checking here first. But my goodness, after having done business with both brands in the past with no problem, I never expected this absolute racket. The amazing thing is, this should not be costing me A PENNY! I pay credit card fees to citibank and they have as a perk of my membership this 100% coverage. This is a classic case of 2 companies wanting to make money at all costs and not honoring their agreements.
Sixt should have a box that pops up automatically on its website to say to anyone booking in Ireland (and they say it's true in Jamaica and Israel too that there is this requirement to show a letter as proof of insurance), Jamaica and Ireland that if you deny buying insurance from them, then you'll have to bring a letter to the rental counter or you will not be allowed to get your car....But the truth is, the Irish business branch of SIXT is not interested in making these customers aware because most people will just give in and buy expensive coverage. We were actually stuck because of our situation and put into a corner by both the credit card company and the rental car company and now they're both trying to wash their hands of doing the right thing. It's disgusting and I sincerely hope that you will follow up and make sure that SIXT RENTAL CAR IS REPORTED and they stop this fraudulent practice of ripping people off. I am also reporting Citibank, though I've been a customer for over 25 years, to the Better Business Bureau for this horrible situation. It was one hell of a "welcome back to Ireland"! I'm currently out $597.53 in insurance, which read more
