Since the airport office of Maggiore is 'only' open until midnight, I sent them an email to find out whether it would be possible to pick up the car later in case the flight is delayed. A few hours later, I received this helpful email reply: "Please, add the flight number to your reservation if you still haven't done so [I have] and we will wait for you maximum until 2 am." I got the best price via cartrawler website. They were the cheapest for the weekend I visited but for sure great service. Smiling and gentle assistant at the desk who also gave me the option between different cars. They do not give u the car keys right away, when you are at the parking lot you have a second stop to do, quite fast, to pick them up and get to the car. Among the different ones I have used in Bologna, this had been the best rental so far. Way better than Avis which has always long waiting. My FIAT Panda was brand new, clean and did it perfectly for me.

If empty, they would just charge me an average price per liter. I said I would return the car full, as I always do. Upon return I found out that they had put "PFO (prepaid fuel option) accepted" in my agreement, which means that they charged me another 100 Euro for a full tank, regardless how much is in the tank when you return it. Lost 100 Eur on that one. Then, I forgot an iPad in the car. My fault of course, but I would expected a reputable company to find it and offer to return it. I called them immediately, and the guy said he couldn't take this info on the phone and gave me a very long, non-company email address, which of course did not work. Tried to call again, but nobody picking up the phone. Have now sent a fax, but don't really expect any results. So, my recommendation; be very careful with the "prepaid fuel option" and try another company at this airport.

I was kind of blackmailed with the surcharge at pick up... so basically "pay land ride or walk". Really not a friendly counter employee and rules and foot notes hidden in their terms and conditions which in my case I could not review in advance as my booking and pre paid fare transited through one of the main resellers (Cartrowler). So be aware of this. I could not get the extra fees reimbursed.... And they'd help desk email contact took more than 2 weeks to reply to my initial complains... and I had to write twice. Car hired was good despite they tried to assign me a diesel car at first which I strictly refused as I paid and booked a petrol one which does not create issues getting in any city center. When we booked a reservation we entered our license information from the US, no error message was given, it allowed us to make the reservation. Upon our arrival at the airport in Bologna, they refused to give us our rental because we did not have an international drivers license. Also, they refused to give us our money back. This is a total SCAM, they allow people to book a car and then they refuse the rental without giving you your money back. I have been traveling through Italy for about 3 months, we have driven everywhere and had never had any issue with other car rental companies.
