Spirit Lake Wilderness Resort - Salmon with rice pilaf and salad

Hellooooo from Staten Island, NY!…read more Back in May, 2014, We went on a cruise from Seattle, Wa to Alaska. One of the stop was Skagway, Alaska, where we rented a car and followed the Murray's Guide driving up the South Klondike Highway. After driving for 2 hours, we were hungry. We went into Carcross Crossings where they had the info center. They told us about the food truck, a nearby diner but highly recommended the restaurant called Spirit Lake Lodge and Restaurant (15-20 min away). We were starving but did not want to eat fish and chips at the food truck. So we drove up to Spirit Lake. It was easy to find. The menu consists of American, Breakfast and Asian food. We weren't expecting much since we are from melting pot of New York and we are now in the middle of nowhere. The food came out and we were amazed by the presentation. It was comparable to a nice restaurant in New York. We ordered: 1)Chicken wings with Honey mustard sauce (there were about 6-7 sauces to choose from) - crispy and just enough sauce without killing it - we devoured it, forgot to take a pic. 2) Salmon Special - nicely seasoned and crispy skin on top with rice pilaf and salad with dressing- Refreshing, I licked the plate clean. 3) ham/cheese sandwich with cream of broccoli soup - Toasted thick wheat bread, crunchy on the outside and moist inside. Deli style ham. Soup was hearty and creamy. No picture :( 4) Chicken Curry (singapore style) - authentic asian taste. Delish! Our bellies were smiling. The owners were extremely nice and friendly. There were locals eating there. They also have ice cream. Must try this restaurant if you're headed to Skagway with the Murray's guide in hand. You won't be disappointed. I'm planning to stay at the cabin next time around and explore nature.

It appeared…read morethat the biggest draw to this location was the restaurant and I have to admit we only stayed at the RV park. I guess we should have known when we were only 1 of 2 guests. The laundry room had been turned into a storage room, no water hook-ups, and they failed to give us the code to the bathroom/showers at check-in. When we called the number, no one answered which resulted in no access to the bathrooms or showers. Essentially, we could have pulled over on the side of the road and had the same experience. They should probably close the RV portion and focus on the restaurant.

The reception area is very nice and it happened to be that Justin Trudeau was there as well, we didn't get to see him but his guards and all the conversions between them to know that it was him.

Especially in the snow since no one knows how to park reasonably when they can't see the lines. But this isn't necessarily on the hotel. The lobby was super clean and welcoming and had a lot of character. Didn't feel dated at all. The front desk was very personable and made it easy to book without a prior reservation. We were given a suite on the second floor. Wow! What space! The kitchenette was so cute and actually really functional. There was even a built in stove! We had two mini fridges that were actually cold enough inside to do their job. I still don't understand why most hotel fridges aren't cold. We had a little control over our room temperature, but it stayed a bit too warm through the night. Our bathroom was wonderful though! Full size toiletries and a large garden tub. Everything was really clean and approachable. The jets in the tub didn't work so that was a little disappointing. Our bed was soft, clean, and comfortable. Our dogs loved the long room and all the space they had to play. The hotel was super welcoming to having our pups. We were thankful to only be on the second floor since we were on the road, moving, and had a lot of our things pieced out. The card reader protected floors were a nice added level of security since their was the presence of the restaurant/bar. The only downside to the location of our room was the noise level coming up from the bar and restaurant. It made our dogs very uneasy and on edge through the night. Thankfully they finally settled down around 3a, but it definitely kept us all awake. Otherwise, the stay was great! Super convenient location and even walkable!

Northern Lights Resort & Spa - Glass chalets

Celebrating a recent milestone anniversary, my husband and I spent three wonderful nights here…read more Seeing the Northern Lights is top on my bucket list and eating his way through Seoul is his. I'm glad one of us was able to fulfill one of our bucket list items on this trip. Northern Lights Resort and Spa is in Whitehorse, Canada in the Yukon. It is about a 2.5 hour flight from Vancouver. Upon landing, we were greeted at the gate by Richard, one of the resort's employees. He grabbed our luggage for us and drove us to the resort, about 20 minutes from the airport. He gave us a brief history lesson on Whitehorse. At the resort, we were greeted by Tobi, who owns and manages the resort with his wife, Lynn. Tobi showed us to our glass chalet with floor to ceiling windows for the best Northern Lights viewing, a fireplace and heated floors. Each chalet also has an alarm where the staff will ring to wake you if the lights are visible. For dinner, we joined the other guests in the main cabin. Meals are all eaten together with the other guests. The resort has 8 chalets and only hosts up to 16 guests at a time. It was a nice, intimate experience that allowed us to meet and get to know other people from across the world. The food for every meal we had there was exceptional. James, the main chef, created every dish with detail and taste. For lunch one day, he made an elk and beef chili which I was hesitant to try. It turned out to be one of the best chilis I've ever had and I cleaned the bowl! Patrick, who was our dinner server, tour guide and hike leader was another incredible staff member. His kindness and knowledge of Whitehorse and the Yukon made our time there so valued. Uliya, our breakfast server, bonfire queen, and spectacular photographer added another wonderful layer to our trip. She was outside in the freezing cold every night making sure we were taken care of. Our experience included some extracurricular activities such as dog sledding and a Whitehorse tour. I don't have enough words to describe how much I enjoyed our time here. Being fortunate enough to see the lights two out of the three nights added that much more to the experience. I hope I can visit again one day!

Part of our family was recently transferred by the US military and the route took us through this part of Canada. We were fortunate enough to make reservations at what looked online like a beautiful "Hotel with a Restaurant, pet and kid friendly" Upon arrival we found this was at best a "Bed and Breakfast" in a beautiful lakeside home with bedrooms for rent. I think the owner was as surprised as we were when we all piled out of two vehicles and a trailer weary from a long day on the Alcan. We went in to "Check-in" and were met by who we assume was the "Chef" at the house who asked if we would be having dinner with them and when we responded no he said "Good". Wasn't sure what to think of that. There was just an uncomfortableness about the place. Over the next half hour while we found out this was no place for our kids, grandkids or pets, my son in law tried to cancel our reservations. Well ...... this is where I'm torn. There was a no cancellation policy which meant no refund at all. No consideration. Just no. While I understand he has every right to adhere strictly to his policies, I was surprised there was no consideration at all. Now mind you this is not anywhere near another place to stay in the winter and in the Yukon. Another two and a half hours to the next town where we found a room. Please don't misunderstand that I am admitting that we were responsible for getting all the information before making the reservations. I think that this type of establishment may do some further vetting of who is making reservations to assure they know exactly what they are getting.
