I visited Sitar yesterday (Saturday) for a lunch buffet with a friend. I must say, I was rather impressed with their food. Their buffet included a soup option, salad, 2 appetizer items, 4+ entrée choices, rice, naan, and 2 dessert choices. For $10 per person, it was a steal! The food was delicious; the only criticism that I have is that the chicken in the Tikka Masala was rather dry. The food was good, but not at all spicy. I have a sensitive palate and would rate the dishes as 0-2 on the spicy scale; this was good for me, but may be a gripe for someone who likes spicy Indian food. The service was excellent - the staff was very attentive and refilled our waters and removed our plates very promptly. I was very impressed with the price, service, and food. Verdict: This venue offers good food for a great buffet price. When I'm feeling in the mood for a sit-down Indian food, I will return to Sitar! read more

I ordered Sitar through Grubhub two times this weekend. Both times, I ordered garlic naan, plain naan, veggie samosa, and the chicken tikka masala. The first time I ordered, I was blown away by how savory and delicious the chicken tikka masala was - it was absolutely perfect - spicy, buttery, mouth-watering and tangy. The rice that it comes with was well-cooked and not too hard. The chicken was also juicy and well seasoned. The second time I ordered, however, the chicken tikka masala was not as spicy as the first time, and the tomato / onion flavor was more prominent. I was a tad disappointed, but next time I'll emphasize "extra spicy." Both the garlic naan and plain naan were fluffy, but a little more doughy than I like. If deciding between the two, I would definitely recommend the garlic naan simply because it is more flavorful. Visited sitar today with my mom for a linch date before I headed off to college. 1. The staff is very polite. They do not annoy you and watch you while you're eating which is great and comfortable, they do however, fill you water up once it's half empty which is always a good thing. 2. The atmosphere is so calm, relaxing & quite. The only reason why I'd give 4 out of 5 stars is because of the lack of variety at the lunch buffet. I went to have lunch with a big group of friends, some of them are from India and they recommended this place because we (non-Indians) could taste different kinds of food without having to order the whole dish for each. They have a buffet service for $9.95 (plus tax!) and you can eat all what you want and serve yourself as many times as you want. That's great! They have some spicy food and others that are not so spicy. I really like Indian cuisine, so I loved this place, but I recognize that this kind of food is not for everyone. New Haven is saturated with Indian restaurants, but Sitar differentiates itself through a more home-y feel. I'm not sure if it's the location or decor, but the food here tastes as if it's more down-to-earth, straight from an authentic home kitchen. The selection for the lunchtime buffet is pretty standard, but well-cooked (and unlimited!). Dinnertime portions are sufficient--not too measly, but not overly generous. The chana masala is thick and savory, and the naan is always crispy and soft in the right places. Review about delivery only! I have not eaten at Sitar in-person, but I have ordered delivery from them on several occasions. Their food is generally cheaper than some other Indian places in New Haven, so Sitar is a solid choice for catering/group orders. The quality of their food is good, and delivery has been prompt each time I've ordered. Their saag paneer is only okay, but I do like their samosas and naan. Overall, I would say that although House of Naan and Sherkaan beat out Sitar in terms of inventiveness and quality, Sitar is a more affordable option for decent Indian food. read more

We were wandering nearby looking for some place for lunch. One of my colleagues is a vegetarian and spotted this. Sure, sounds good. Lucky find for all of us because they had a delicious lunch buffet. For $10, you really do get a lot of food. Excellent soup. Service was haphazard with the water refills and the buffet took a few minutes to get pulled together. And some items were out of stock for a little longer than I'd like (how about the Naan, please?). I love Indian food. I have a place in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY where there are a lot of great Indian restaurants. My neighbor recommended the lunch buffet and I decided to try it out. I'm vegetarian and the buffet was much smaller then I'm used to in NY but there were 4 veggie dishes plus basmati rice and nan so I was set. The Vegetable Korma was so cashew creamy deeelish. Their spinach with chickpeas is actually my favorite way to have spinach (instead of cheese). The other dishes were a potato with green peppers and some kind of fritter. This place has fantastic customer service and food. My family needed vegan, vegetarian and meat options. The gentleman patiently took the time to name and describe the vegan options to me. There were only a few in the buffet so I ordered off of the regular menu, but I was told if I give them notice before the dinner meal they can make multiple vegan options for me in the buffet as well. My non-adventurous children (including one vegetarian) found plenty of options in the buffet. We encouraged them try a bite of everything so they could discover new things. The food wasn't too spicy for them. When we told them our youngest loved one of their desserts, the gentleman gave her a container of them to take home. She was so excited. Love love love this place. I think I was one of their first few customers, have been going there since the beginning. There is nothing I have eaten there that I didn't like. I can't eat at many restaurants because of a pretty bad Gluten intolerance- and they have been VERY careful. During lunch, I can't eat at the buffet any more because of bread cross contamination by the PATRONS (not the waitstaff or cooks), so I order off the menu. My favorite safe gluten-free dishes are: Chicken Tikka Masala- creamy yummy flavorful favorite. Any of the Biryanis- really very yummy. Chicken Jafrazi- very flavorful and not spicy Chicken Madras- uses coconut-milk, tangy, saucy, makes me drool. New Favorite of mine! The saffron rice has such a wonderful aroma! The waitstaff are incredibly friendly, and really pay attention. The owners are such kind and sweet people- they are very hardworking. I have nothing but respect for them! Came for the $9.95 lunch buffet Easter Sunday and was very pleased with the overall experience. Located about a block outside of the Yale bubble, Sitar is a clean, quaint, and affordable Indian restaurant. The highlight of my trip was definitely the service. The staff were incredibly nice and came by to fill up my water or take away plates every couple minutes. For a small restaurant with only a few customers at peak lunch hour, the food selection was quite large. I enjoyed the fresh, hot naan, the classic tikka masala, and the chili chicken. The Chicken madras was smooth and delicious. The chicken Marsala spicy was not too spicy and we were pleased. There were nine of us and all of us were very happy except my lamb curry was not that tender and not very flavorful which is why I only gave 4 stars. I would recommend this place. I will be back. I have been going to this restaurant since five years, however, my recent experiences have motivated me to write this review. The food at 'Sitar' has always been normal and nothing great but still I go there because it's nearby my home. However, lately my visits to 'Sitar' are not enjoyable, mostly due to the bad behaviour of the staff. The waiters are rude and at one instance I have been served chicken when I had specifically told the waiter about my dietary restrictions. On top of that the waiter was not at all apologetic and infact was very rude in telling me and my guests that we should have come there earlier. We were in the restaurant at least 45 minutes before the official closing time. The manager did say sorry when the waiter started to shout at us, however, he was very unprofessional in taking care of issue. In short I would like to say that there are lots of Indian restaurants in New Haven and you should better be going to a different place if you want to have Indian food (probably better food too) in an amicable environment. read more

What a gem! We were craving Indian food and decided to head into New Haven. We had a handful of choices but decided on Sitar. It was very quiet and we were a bit concerned, though the interior is lovely and there is plenty of on street parking available. We were wondering why it wasn't busy and were hopeful it wasn't the food. Well, it wasn't the food because it was fantastic! So flavorful and filling. I ordered lamb Korma and my husband had the shrimp masala. The poori was delicious. Service was great. Soda prices are high with no refills but the large is huge and you won't need a refill. I have tried the weekend lunch buffet and I find the buffet menu as well as food good. The place was filled with college students and hence it was quite noisy. Stopped in for lunch with LW on a Wednesday afternoon. If you're hungry for Indian buffet and don't care if it's mediocre, Sitar, well, exists. The naan is glorified pita bread. The rice is dry and clumpy. The chicken is dry. The onion ball thingies are too greasy and flavorless. Veggie dishes are often bland. Tandoor chicken has probably been sitting out for a few days. But, well, it's there. I like to get a first plate full of just veggie dishes, then I follow it up with Meat Plate. I don't know why we keep coming back to this place. We really should just walk to Tandoor. There's a certain beauty in the waiter routinely coming around to profess that fresh naan is out, leading you to somehow think this time it'll be different. I do not understand why the reviewers have placed this restaurant above Tandoor (the one in the old diner). This is not among the best Indian restaurants I've tried, nor does it come close. It's much too expensive relative to what you get. The food here was average...a bit on the heavy side as well. The selection is exactly what you'd find in a "typical" Indian restaurant, all the standard stuff...and it all tastes about like what you'd expect, but in a mediocre sort of way. Service here was a bit patchy, to the point of being outright comical. Our waiter spaced out on one of the dishes we ordered and then tried to make a really slick save: "Oh you wanted that with your meal?" and then rushed to have it brought out. What's the bottom line? This place is terribly overpriced relative to the quality of the food. If this place were top-notch it could get away with the prices, which amount to about $20 a head if you order bread and stuff. But it's mediocre and in my opinion, the meal you get is worth about $7-8 a head. Avoid this place--there are many better options in town. read more

Sitar is one of my favorite Indian restaurants in New Haven. Students come here for their excellently priced $10 lunch buffet. But if you come at any other time, it is pretty pricey (around ~$10 a curry or up). Nonetheless, Sitar definitely hits a curry craving with its spot-on flavors. They also deliver through Grub-hub or online (and very efficiently too!) and let you order the vegetarian or meat combo meals (for $30 or $36 you can get a whopping meal for 2 that includes appetizers, samosas, 2 curries, rice, naan, gulab jaman, lentil soup, dal). It's a great deal, and if you plan to order 2 curries and naan anyways, it's worth it to just spring for the deal. What I love about Sitar is that they nail the curry sauces - the masala (tomato-based cream sauce, although could be a little sweet for some), and korma (a creamier, nutty herbed sauce) are two of my favorites. I normally get chicken with my korma, and my one complaint is that the chicken is very dry and kind of hard. But I could pour that sauce over everything else and still be happy. The saag paneer (spinach with cottage cheese cubes) is also great and fresh-tasting, although there could be a few more cheese cubes added. The daal makhni (buttered lentils) is also rich and satisfying, although I tend to like Thali's the best. The garlic naan always comes piping hot and generous. The lentil soup in the combo is not a show-stopper - the soup base is pretty thin and a little sour. Their mango lassi is also great and can be delivered! I haven't tried any of their seafood, but to me, dousing seafood in a thick, rich sauce overpowers any remnant of the ocean, so why bother. They also cater and deliver, although it is definitely not cheap. read more

It is NOT the best Indian in CT - that is just crazy talk. There is excellent Indian in Middletown, CT - two restauruant depending on whether you want South or North Indian food - Udupi Bhavan (South) and Haveli Indian Restaurant (North). My lunch at Sitar today was satisfying. The food was good. The service was fine. And for $10, I was a happy camper. I paced myself on the buffet line. I went for a taste of Onion Bhajia (and was glad I did). Rice with the mixed vegetable curry (it was good). And Tandoori Chicken (not bad, though the pieces I chose ended up being a bit dry). I finished my meal with some salad and the mint sauce. The highlight of my meal was what I actually went for first - the lentil soup. And on a chilly day like today, both the flavor and the warmth were so welcomed and appreciated. As for the service, the thing I appreciated most? I never felt like I had to go thirsty. They were very attentive and excellent at not breaking the flow of our table conversation. The downfall of my review is that I didn't do a full sampling of the buffet. As you can see, only one curry. Happened to find an interesting sounding restaurant with decent rating and decided to take a chance. I was NOT disappointed! It was a bit late so there wasn't much foot traffic but they had a lot of to- go orders. I ordered Chicken Tikka and Tadka daal. The tadka daal was one of the best I've had in a long time.
