When we ended up in an alley in Leith I was a little apprehensive but as soon as we entered it was like food heaven. I got the steak and frites, which was absolutely delicious. The steak was grilled to perfection and the fries were nice and crispy. We also tried the parmesan fries and those were great too! They have a lot of options for lunch as well as a full bar and rolled ice cream! It's a fun little place to try a few different foods and enjoy nice weather on the weekend. Keep in mind it's only open on Saturday afternoons, but it's worth the wait and the drive to Leith.

Aha, I remembered, we'd be passing that new street food police box that Blythe reviewed earlier today, let's stop by and try it. Cue, the best decision I made all weekend. Having had a busy day, what with the Tram Stop Market, the lovely chap who runs B&B had run out of slaw, so gave us a discount on our meals. Totally unnecessary, but very welcome nonetheless. As we were going to be walking and eating (no mean feat) we both opted for rolls - mine with beef, Kip's with crab. The beef was slow-cooked short rib in a sherry gravy, umm, amazing! Tender and delicious, the roll (from Manna House) soaked up the juices wonderfully providing an entirely enjoyable experience with every bite. The crab comes in a home-made lemon mayonnaise, and Kip declared it better than the beef (I wouldn't agree, they were both excellent and I preferred the warm temperature of the beef to the cold crab). B&B had proved to be so good we stopped by again on Sunday - this time I had crab on 'tarragon salted chips' and Kip had crab with quinoa salad. Again, he was certain his meal was better (it was very nice) but I'm a sucker for chips and these were perfect, yellow, crispy chips made in their little deep-fat fryer to order. Mr B&B told us he's got the lease for 12 months, so please do pop by and try! There's a couple of great sounding brunch options which I'm keen to try. In fact I want to go back again today, but I suspect 3 days in a row might be a bit excessive. Oh, and of course now I've made myself really hungry. Mmmm crab and chips...

After some extreme bargain hunting at the Omni car boot sale I needed some quick grub!…read more I had passed Barnacles & Bones a couple of times on my way home from work and going on the recent reviews I decided to give it a go. I was also interested to see what food you can make in a tiny police box! A friendly hello came from within as I studied the menu. The options are simple - crab dressed with lemon mayonnaise or slow cooked rib of beef. Pretty gourmet for a phone box! This can be served on tarragon fries, quinoa salad or on a roll. We decided to go for one of each on chips. The food is fresh and made to order so be patient, remember there is only room for one chef! Our food arrives in cardboard boxes and we happily take our wooden forks and dig in. Delicious! The chips are wonderfully crispy and the tarragon salt is unusual but the aromatic flavour works. The main attractions of the beef and the crab are lovely and soft in contrast to the crunchy potato. The flavours are delicate and tasty. I felt the beef was more of a success as it was hot. Although the crab was delicious it was cold and didn't work as well on the chips. At £6 a box it's not the cheapest but a nice treat. I had the wood pigeon wrap with cranberry chutney and spinach it was amazing! I have never had wood pigeon before and it was tasty and is like a red meat but its a bird! What I know weird! But tasty! The next time we went I got the yummy pheasant wrap which was also really tasty. These guys make other types of food too but they weren't selling it at the Christmas market. I came across Ziggy's operating a stall at the Jazz Festival Mardi Gras, and according to their website, will be running a trailer at The Meadows, so hopefully the details are correct! I tried out their pea and potato salad - the mint was too strong for my tastes, with the salad overwhelmed by it - perhaps younger mint would have worked nicer. Their sushi uses white rice that I could see, so that was offlimits, and their enticing gluten free crepes also were banned as had no options that worked for my restrictive diet. Still, if I see Ziggy's again, I'll be certainly sticking my head in to see what they offer. Their raw pizza looked fantabulous....

Their "one feeds two" commitment means that for every purchase you make, they feed a hungry person in need, working with feeding partners around the world. Much like Social Bite, their story is inspirational. Their soup, as well as their morning porridge, is excellent, with a constantly changing menu of options. Go soon and go often! Overall, we said: "Elephant Juice made me very happy. Their soup was spectacularly good and the service extremely welcoming, with the wonderful "Dumbo" providing a quirky serving station. I can't recommend the place highly enough to you. In the coming weeks and months, I think the intention is to take the van on the road, and offer their excellent fare in a range of venues across Edinburgh. Currently based at the Local Motive Market, Fridays in Waverley Station, Shrimpwreck is one man and a deep fryer. He freshly fries big, juicy king prawns in a tempura batter whist simultaneously frying up crispy sweet potato fries on the side. Smother those prawns in sauce, bacon bits and other accoutrements, and whack them in a soft brioche bun and you've got yourself a very good sandwich indeed. I hope that Shrimpwreck branches out and starts appearing at other markets (or even a venue of their own) as frankly once a week is just cruel. These babies are tasty.
