I can definitely see why people love this beach. It's clean, it's gorgeous, and it's very easy to get to if you don't have a car (just a ten-minute walk from the Manchester stop off the Rockport commuter rail line). This is how a beach should be! I didn't realize how perfectly cerulean and beautiful the water was until I went home and uploaded pictures onto my computer...wow. There are also picturesque rocky cliffs and boulders that border the beach that add to the ambiance. The bathhouse facilities are well-maintained and clean, and I couldn't help but notice that they actually smelled GOOD--really good, like weather-aged wood. There was also a very cool stand sponsored by the local library of paperbacks to borrow in case you forgot your "beach read". So clever! More beaches should do that. HOWEVER, unless you are a resident of Manchester, it will cost you a wee bit to spend your day at Singing Beach. Commuter rail from Boston is a cool $17.50 round trip, and then you'll tack on the additional $5 beach walk-on fee. If you choose to drive, parking is $25 and according to the sign at the beach, is only a non-resident option Monday-Thursday during the summer season. So, despite the cost, I would tend to utilize commuter rail. It's a beautiful ride and it really couldn't be easier to access the beach from the station. Definitely check this place out if you're on a "Beaches of MA" tour like I am this summer! read more

Singing Beach is one of only a few beaches you can reach by pubilc transportation, but it is still spotless, quaint and family-oriented. Step off the Rockport line in Manchester-By-The-Sea and grab your beach supplies at the small shop nearby, then head through the parking lot and hang a left on the aptly-named Beach Street. After a half-mile walk through a pretty little neighborhood, where you'll pass Captain Dusty's Ice Cream Shop (stop in on your way back for a late afternoon treat) and a view of the marina, you'll come upon the beach shack of Singing Beach. Here you'll find free showers, a snack shack with both healthy and junk food snacks, and a give-a-book, take-a-book box run by the local library, all of which give this beach a hospitable feel (despite what the locals might say). The beach itself is striking, bookended by a cliff on one side and a hill on the other, with mansions and beach houses so numerous and distant that from here they seem to spill off the sides into the ocean. Camped in the sand you'll find mostly families with small children; this is a beach to relax, rather than see-and-be-seen. And as far as I know, the water's fine--it's far enough from the red-tide, bacteria-paranoia of the city here (I hope). If you get hot and hungry during the day, consider packing it in and heading to Rockport, only a few stops down the line. This artsy-touristy community houses a plethora of creative shops for late-afternoon browsing, and some relatively cheap seafood options if you're going for the complete Cape vibe. It really does make a noise but it is great to go here!!! If you drive then you will pay $25 to park unless of course you live there or know someone who does. You can take the train from Boston to here as well and just walk from the station for about 15 minutes or so through the quaint neighborhood (who are rumored to not be terribly fond of people walking to the beach) This is a you bring it in you take it out beach. If you didn't bring it with you then you will either go without or pay a big arm and leg to get it (at the beach they told us a beach towel would cost $50 - WTH! !!) oh and you pay $5 to enter the beach unless you buy a yearly pass (forgot that price) There are restrooms and changing areas there and lifeguards and one snack place - that's about it. But once on the beach it is bliss! Soft squeaky sand, plenty of room, beautiful ocean, rocks to sit or climb on and the view of all the killer houses up on the rocks above the beach. Even with a lot of people there it did not feel crowded. The water was beautiful and clear and a bit rocky but freaking cold!!! I salute the people who were actually out there swimming. Singing Beach is my favorite North Shore beach. It is long, clean, it sings as you walk on the dry sand, it has decent amenities and it's full of hip, young, skinny people who take the train from Boston. I know most people complain about the parking situation, but it doesn't bother me. I usually park in town, make sure there are no "no parking" signs around, and walk for a mile or so to get to the beach. It's called exercise. :) read more

This place is awesome! A group of friends and I decided to meander on up to get our beach fix in this past weekend, and we were def not disappointed! What a gem! First of all, Manchester By the Sea is a cute little town, and was all decked out for the 4th. The parking situation is a little less than stellar because you have to park in town and then walk up, but it really does only take ten minutes and then you're golden. The beach is really pretty, with rocks and "cliffs" surrounding it. We got there super early, around 8AM, so we missed out on the $5 walk on fee...but that doesn't exactly break the bank. The beach itself is fairly small but got pretty crowded, but everyone was really nice and friendly. GREAT family friendly beach. There's little in the way of food and amenities, but it's fabulous all the same and it's also just a 15 minute drive to Gloucester/Rockport. This will be absolutely be my local haunt this summer! read more

This is the one nude beach on the North Shore where everyone is singing. All the time. Showtunes mostly but some rock and heavy metal too. I once saw a family from Peabody and a guy from Newburyport do a rendition of blue moon acapella that brought tears to my eyes. They were all nude even the dog which sang baritone. Just kidding but it is a GORGEOUS beach. Go this summer. It is one of the many things that make New England great. ps. You can go nude no one will mind. read more

You know, with no very few beach days in these freezing cold area of the country--I'll shell out the big bucks to go here no problem. The best part about this beach, in addition to it being geougous & clean--is that people that go respect the beach, help keep it clean and respect other people trying to enjoy the day too. The best part for me is getting away from over crowded, dirty beaches with tons of obnoxious people who are loud, throw their garbage wherever they want...and ruin it for everybody. I say keep the prices up & the rif raf out---if I lived in that town I would want to do the same thing---nothing worse than a bunch of obnoxious out of town jerks taking up all the parking and coming in with their loud radios, bad language, garbage, footballs and the like...then it would be just like any other place. read more

I am the ridicule of all my friends because I swear that the sand on Singing Beach says "Woop! Woop!" when you kick at it. A few years ago in college, a bunch of friends and I stood in a circle kicking the coarse sand at each other, and there was a chorus of "Woops!" all around! How can you forget that? I came back to the beautifully serene Singing Beach this week to prove that my memory serves me right and that "wooping" can be considered singing, too. Crane Beach is my all time favorite, but I think Singing Beach is a close second. I took the Commuter Rail here like many Yelpers suggested. No problems, and it was nice to see the oceanscape whizzing by as I looked out the window. The train was not particularly crowded on a Wednesday morning and I was glad to have a seat to myself. The beach is about 10-15 minutes from the Commuter Rail stop, and the walk to the beach is picturesque and lined with the kind of houses (read BIG) that I would love to live in some day (I can't wait until I live in my oceanside Versaillesesque house with peacocks wandering through my property - but I digress) . The beach itself is clean, and there is a little bathhouse with bathrooms, stalls to change in and showers. There is a little food stand, but I brought my own sandwich which I was happy with. I stayed at the beach for 4 or 5 hours and was pleased to find that there were not a lot of screaming children or creepy dudes lurking about. I went alone with a book and it was incredibly peaceful. I was also pleased to discover that the water was not that frigid Atlantic bone chilling temperature. It was actually pretty pleasant and I enjoyed splashing in the surf (it was a little seaweedy at times so if that creeps you out be warned). On my way back to the T (and please keep in mind that the Commuter Rail only stops here several times a day so plan accordingly) I stopped at Captain Dusty's which was recommended by several Yelpers. I indulged in the Frozen Pudding and it was delicious! Fruity, creamy and rummy! Yum! It was the perfect end to a lovely day. read more

Drop me at the curb with some sunscreen and a beach towel and I'm good to go! This was a fantastic beach: cool rocks to climb on at the opposite ends, not too big but not too small, great sand too. The water was almost unbearably cold! It was so hot though you had to do something to cool off. I'm surprised we weren't fighting for territory with penguins though, it really was icy cold. The parking lot nearest the beach is reserved for residents with stickers only. Don't make the mistake of thinking they won't tow - one cop had already called in a tow truck to remove an offending non-resident vehicle. It was nice to see the women's bathroom in O.K. shape, so much better than most beach changing houses/bathrooms. We didn't get anything at the concession stand but a lot of people got in line for some ice cream or frozen lemonade to cool off with. Of course this trip was post Labor Day so I imagine we didn't get the usual crowds and the beach was free. Combine that with a free parking spot we scored back in town and we think we did pretty good for a beach trip. read more

I hate to be too critical of such a beautiful place but there are just a few huge things about Singing Beach that hurt it...badly. It's great for townsfolk and people on the North Shore and if I lived here you'd find me here all the time. The beach is beautiful. Not too long, it's just the right width for good-sized groups to congregate but with enough places for singles to stretch out without getting too close to the neighbors. Water is a bit cool, but then again, this is the North Shore and that has to be expected. The sand is relatively fine and the place is usually kept pretty clean. Problems? First of all, if you're from out of town, expect to park around half a mile away...and if you show up around midafteroon during a busy day parking is even tougher to find. The commuter rail runs here but round trip is $13.50 and that's a bit much for a trip to the beach. Add a walk-on fee for nonresidents and the value of Singing Beach takes a major nosedive. I like Singing Beach for the beach. I'm not sure I like it enough to pay...and pay...and pay some more for the privilage of visiting. read more

Be warned: if you are going to the beach with a car, and you plan on parking in what seems to be a completely LEGAL parking spot near the Manchester MBTA station off of Beach Street (unmarked, no towing signs, no limit on time) you could be unlawfully towed. I was told by the Manchester Parks and Recreation that those spots are legal. I parked there and was towed with NO POLICE TICKET OR # (this is against Massachusetts law for public or private lots without car owner's consent). I had to walk to Cross Towing to get my car, at which point the owner had me wait 20 minutes in the middle of a junk yard full of cars for him to arrive. I then had to pay $130 to have my car towed from a legal spot. I am now having to jump through hoops to report the issue. It seems like a scam to me. How am I supposed to use the commuter rail if I have my car with me from the Manchester stop? I have been to Singing Beach in the past without a car, and it is quite beautiful and fun, but I am afraid I will not be a beach patron there at all until I know that I am not supporting a town that allows these types of things to happen. read more

I spent my childhood going to beaches on the South Shore. I was convinced I couldn't love any other beach as much as I loved Peggotty Beach in Scituate. That was, until I started going out with my first boyfriend. He's from Manchester, and used to work at Singing Beach during the summers. I would go to work with him, showing up at the beach early in the morning, laying down a towel, and spending the day napping in the sun until his shift was over. The beach was never too crowded, even on the hottest summer days. (Thank you, resident-only parking.) It's the perfect beach for a walk at midnight. When it's too cold for a walk, park your car at the end of the road for awhile and enjoy the view. Perhaps a little make-out session in the car, just like the good old days. read more

I LOOVE singing beach! Never actually heard anyone singing..but, that's beside the point. I'm beyond super lucky considering my awesome In-laws live 1/4 of mile walk from this beach and have stickers!!!! YIPPPEEEE!!! This beach is actually pretty cool to spend the entire day at. The bathrooms have showers so you can change and shower to get all the salt off of you sticky body. It also has a cute little snack bar..with..mmmm...SLUSH!! Yup..Richie's Slush..What else could you ask for on a hot summer day??? Beach, Sand, Fun, Sun and Slush? I love it. Also it's all in walking distance of Manchester center where are tons of cute little shops, ice cream shop and plenty of places for lunch and dinner!! If you could see a whale go swim by on this beach..I'd think real quick I was in heaven...now back to the singing..I think the theory is that when you walk in the sand it's suppose to sound like someone singing.. I wish I was a millionaire so I could live on this beach..for now..I LOVE MY IN LAWS! THEY ROCK!!!!!! *I thought I'd mention..one tiny..thing! NO toys in the water...no boogie boards, no blow up dinosaurs with happy faces, no donuts with pinks flowers not even a floaties..nothing...it's alright. Since I don't have a car, I seldom leave the city. This was my first trip out on the commuter rail and it was totally worth it! I was going to go to Revere beach but heard really bad reviews (both on YELP and offline) so decided to give this place a try. It was relatively clean (with no wierdos) and just a nice day to lie in the sun and read a book. Hopefully I would have time to head down again before the summer ends. Wonderful place to come and spend the day. People are friendly, helpful and reasonable. Clean beach. Rules: no trash cans on the beach so "what you bring in, you take out" and they recycle. There's the issue w/parking too. Unless you are a resident or arrive before 11:00 you're more likely not going to find a spot that doesn't have a 2 hr max. The one parking lot cost $25 - parking ticket is also $25, both you have to walk the mile long road to get to the beach . If you're like me and just want to get to the beach, park behind the city hall and take your ticket. Great time! Food, Italian icy, bathrooms w/ showers and changing rooms. read more

I've only been to local beaches in the Boston area which were accessible by T-stop ... then someone recommended Singing Beach. It took the Commuter Rail to get there, but it was amazing and worth it! Supposedly when you step on the sand, it sings. I couldn't hear it over the waves and people, but it sure was lovely to walk on. My main purpose for going out to singing beach was because my boyfriend traditionally goes down to South Carolina with his family to their vacation rental. However, due to finals, he hasn't been able to go for the past three years. I wanted him to have a nice beach experience in the summer... After trying Wonderland beach, Dorchester's beach, and then Revere Beach (shut up, I'm fairly new to Boston), all we had was a rash and some dirty water. Singing Beach was a dream! Amazing clean white sand, water you could see to the bottom of, waves! If this were eBay then A+++++~~~~_~_~_~_~ Would buy again! Do you combine shipping? Parking is $25 and then also walk the half mile or so to get the beach and then pay another $5 to get in. It's worth it, as it's obviously well maintained and the beach house is pretty good for what it is. There's a convenience store nearby to get overpriced drinks (what else would you expect?) and Frisbees, a Dunkin Donuts, a real to God grocery store, and a crappy restaurant called Manchester Crossing I'm sure I'll review soon read more

A private beach, meaning they charge you out the wazoo. This place is in a nice little part of MA, very quaint. There is NO parking, basically... and on major holidays (4th of July, Memorial Day) non-members do NOT have access to their parking. This place is called "singing beach" because when you walk the sand makes a humming noise- or so I've been told. The times I have gone there wasn't alot of waves nor people venturing out into the water. Sort of disappointing. I'll stick with the Cape. read more

Overall good trip for the following reasons: - soft and warm sand - warm(ish) water - alcohol friendly (yup) - not super crowded - bathrooms available and fairly clean for a public beach bathroom Like everyone else says, parking fee of $25 is even more ridiculous on the weekends for non-residents. Non-residents pay $25 and still have to park 0.5 mi from the beach across from the Dunkin Donuts. PLUS there is a $5 walk-in fee. If you have a lot of stuff with you, you can go through their rotary to do a quick drop off. read more

So, I *finally* made it to the beach this summer. After almost missing the commuter rail from North Station (oops, sorry guys!), we settled in for the 50 minute ride out to Manchester. Yeah, round trip is normally about $13, but if you're four women and the person selling tickets is a guy, you might get a $27 round trip family fare, which comes out to under $7/person. Instead of buying food from the little concession stand at the beach, stop at Crosby's grocery store to pick up some snacks before you make the 10 minute walk down Beach St. Honestly, I don't mind a $5 walk on fee - it helps keeps the beach trash free, the facilities clean, and lifeguards available. Besides, if you're going to come back more than twice this summer, you can just buy a season pass for $12.50. The beach is clean and pretty, with plenty of space, even at high tide. It's relatively small, but wasn't crowded on a Sunday in August. The water is a little cool, but not freezing, and hey, we're in Massachusetts! Do yourself a huge favor unless you have a sibling or friend with a Manchester resident sticker - take the train so you can sweat it out on the beach without having to sweat it out about your car. I was really nervous about going here because there are so many cautionary tales about cost and parking. Lo and behold- I was able to go to the beach on a Saturday (of July 4th weekend, no less) and paid $0 for parking, $0 for beach access, and enjoyed the beach without feeling crowded! Went here last weekend. Only locals can park near the beach, so I dropped off my wife with our beach gear and drove 3/4 mile to the train station to park ($25...ugh). I walked up the hill, met my wife, and we each paid our $5 beach fee (ugh), and we're off to the beautiful beach. The day was hot, so we set up a half tent and relaxed in the shade. The sand was perfectly soft (and, yes it sings when it crushes u der your feet) and the water was refreshingly COLD on such a warm day. There were quite a few people there, but the beach didn't seem overly crowded. The concession stand was surprisingly good! We had a chicken chipotle sandwich and some sort of vanilla flavored ice cream and fruit concoction topped with honey which was awesome. Highly recommended for a fun day in the sun. read more

I made the decision earlier in the week that NO MATTER WHAT I was going to the beach on Saturday and gosh darn it if I end up on Revere beach. Oh no. We ended on the soft, lovely, clean sand of Singing Beach. Despite a snafu with the GPS, that teeth-grindingly-obnoxious $25 parking spot and the equally ridiculous $5 "cover," I breathed a sigh of relief when we finally got up the stairs and I was able to breathe in the salt air and take in the sights. Beautiful homes overlooking the water, big boulders, clean water, quiet groups, well-behaved children. An utterly perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon. You are somewhere far away from the hustle and bustle of Boston. The stresses of summer classes. The reality of the work week come Monday. Just clean, salty air. Breathe it in. Serenity awaits you. Certainly not a trip I can make (or really, afford) every weekend. But one certainly worth it. And if you pack 5 people in the car, a $10 per person cost doesn't seem all that unaffordable. PS - Keep your food in closed containers. Hilarity ensued as I watched a dozen seagulls stake their claim on a slightly opened bag of Tostitos. The sad owners didn't know what hit them. read more

My first beach excursion of 2008. Saw a friend's photos on Flickr, read the caption, hit up Google maps, and drove there today. Got to love the Internet. $5 walk-on fee, fine $25 parking fee? No thank you. That seems incredibly excessive. Park and walk the half-mile or however it is from the 2-hr spot... It was, however, clean, small, and just the kind of ambiance desired. I would definitely go back, but considering I went mid-day on a Tuesday could have been the main factor in loving it. Were it a Saturday afternoon, cramped with kids and everything else, who knows...it could have been a headache from hell. Minimal seaweed, just a few rocks, and really...really good sun. Too bad I forgot my bathing suit. I should get a 1-star rating for that :( Will definitely go again. read more

Great beautiful beach, that's big enough that it never gets full. The only issue is the parking - so taking the MBTA is a great solution. Overall the water is clean and quite a few times it was calm enough to swim around. Lifeguards are pretty calm too. read more

I had my first adventure to Singing Beach on a hot weekday when I had the morning off. It was great! I arrived around 9am and there were only a few non-resident spots remaining at the Park, a 1/2 mile from the beach. (Thank you other yelpers - great advice). I walked onto the beach for $5 but reconsidered and bought a season pass for $12 for a beach tag which beats many of the other, perhaps more coveted area beaches. It also reminds me of NJ- where the beaching system is much more friendly and you just buy a pass instead of paying so much for parking like you do for all the MA beaches. If you do miss out on free parking the commuter rail nearby has 2 hour spots. Parking at the beach itself will cost $25 It was peaceful and blissful until around 10 am when a school group came and people set up their radios. I prefer to listen to the crash of the ocean waves so I just moved my spot and was happy to do it for some quiet. I'll return to take advantage of my season pass. It is beautiful with the rocks bordering the sandy area. The sand on the beach is hot and so I didn't walk around bare foot but, that's summer. The bathhouse is nearby and easy to use the toilet. I filled up a water bottle and they do have a snack stand. It's a lovely community beach and I'm glad I found it. I've been going to Crane Beach for years but this is easier to get to off the highway and less pricey. Perhaps not as charming because it lacks the dunes, but I was satisfied and will return as much as I can before it gets cold! read more

Went for a late Saturday afternoon adventure and ended up in Manchester-by-the-Sea. How these things happen, you cannot ask - these are answers to questions I do not have. Regardless, we found plenty of free parking (2hr limit) in a lot behind the library and walked 10 minutes or so past Captain Dusty's ice cream shack and up a hill to the lovely beach. Supposedly there is a $5 fee to get on, but we went late enough in the day (4PM-ish) that no one wanted our bucks. At this hour, the beach is still bustling but not crazy crowded. The water is freezing - but this is to be expected, even during the heart of summer. The whole place is super clean (even the restrooms - be still my heart!). He said I probably wouldn't remember the conversation, but lo and behold, my shitty memory managed to hang on to some small details of him raving about this place. This is written from the perspective of a car-less city dweller. I went here for the first time this past weekend and it was everything I hoped it could be. $12 round trip from Boston on commuter rail, $5 beach admission. They didn't even search my cooler or anything so I could have smuggled in my beer! The sand at this place is wonderful - the most fine sand I've felt at a New England beach. It wasn't too crowded and we were able to pretend that we were on the Riviera because we noticed that, oddly enough, everyone around us was speaking French. The water is very nice though definitely more surf than you'll get in the Harbor or the Bay. There's a bit of an undertow as well, so keep an eye on your kids. But the water was temperate and clear (I was able to open my eyes underwater with no issues.) This will be my preferred beach destination for the indefinite future. Highly recommended. read more

Okay, so this isn't actually in Boston. But everyone MUST know about "Singing Beach" if you live in or around Boston so I figured it counts. You can either drive the 45 minutes to Manchester-by-the-Sea or you can take the commuter rail to the T stop with the same name. It is $20 to park in the lot that is always full or $25 to get a parking ticket on the same street so it's your call. Then you have to walk about a half mile to the beach and pay $2 to get in. Or it might be $3. I can't recall. This beach is called Singing Beach bc of the sound the sand makes under your bare feet. It really is cool. The beach is beautiful and the ocean is sparkling. I highly recommend this beach to anyone who needs an escape from the city and wants to work on their tan! read more

This is such a gorgeous and clean beach. It's hard to park if you aren't a local so I probably should deduct a star, but I'm guessing that by making it difficult to park is how they keep it so nice. Since we were here after Labor Day it wasn't too hard to park in front of the park down the street. read more
