L'Maiz Sandwich and Coffee Shop

This tiny little cafe has only been open a month and a half. I went in recently, and the whole…read moreexperience literally made me feel as though I was on holiday. The place is quite hidden away, and you might miss it if you're only walking up the Coleshill High Street. But if you park in Church Hill car park, you have to walk past L'Maiz to get to the main road. And it's definitely worth stopping by. Inside, you'll be immediately greeted by the Italian owner, who'll seat you in one of three tables. Yes, the cafe only has limited space, but I think this provides a great intimacy to the whole experience. Browsing at the menu, I was absolutely astonished by the wide range of food available. From hot roasts to toasties to breakfast to pasta, everything was freshly made by the owner himself. The pizzas (all of them!) particularly looked tempting, and I loved that you could get three size choices, and even just purchase once slice for £1 if you wanted! I did exactly this because I had eaten not long before. But if had I known how delicious the margarita was going to be beforehand, I'd have definitely bought a 9" (or maybe even a 14" for £9.50 if I was feeling particularly greedy). Next time I go in, I'm definitely trying the Hot Mexican Madness. It looks, sounds and smells amazing. Surprisingly for June, it was exceptionally cold outside; so I opted for a hot chocolate to accompany the pizza. The hot drink tasted exceptional, and beats any run-of-the-mill coffee shop version that I've tried in the past. No matter what time of the day, L'Maiz can cater for you. Personally, I must return for breakfast to sample the Full English (£3.50). It was also lovely to learn that the shop was named after the owner's daughter, which explained the homely, warm feel to the cafe.

Me and my wife visited L'Maiz this morning for breakfast and we cannot fault this place. Disgusting! I had…read morethe chicken penne romana bake. Basically it was chicken with pasta, tomato sauce and a bit of pepperoni. The chicken wasn't fresh, it was probably cooked earlier in the day and had a terrible taste. They did not use any spices, not even salt or pepper. The star is only for the waiter who was really friendly. Otherwise I do not recommend this restaurant, it is far to be an Italian restaurant. It is not because a restaurant cooks pastas and pizzas that it is an Italian restaurant.

While visiting from the US, we grabbed a late dinner at this "New York Italian" restaurant…read more Hilarity ensued. First, they don't slice the pizzas. Why? No-one in the restaurant appeared to know! But there it was: a huge pie on a small plate, goading the diner with its vast oneness. Second, they post Italian-sounding words all over the place. Just so you know it's *Italian* food. But then the menu is full of hamburgers and chicken covered in BBQ sauce. Third, my son tipped salt all over the table and, when asked why he'd done such a bloody stupid thing, he said, "To be healthy." He'd clearly received the leaflet from the Sodium Council. Regardless, the food was very acceptable and the service, in particular, was fantastic. Our waitress was absolutely what every parent wants: patient with the kids, pleasant, helpful, and very fun indeed. It's not truly American Italian fare but, God love them, they're trying, and it made for an entertaining and enjoyable meal.
