"Burning the ground I break from the crowd I'm on the hunt…read moreI'm after you I smell like I sound. I'm lost and I'm found And I'm hungry like the wolf ..." When confronted with a deeply perplexing conundrum, I often resort to the wisdom offered by the great social commentators, Duran Duran. For example, when squeezing and scampering my way through Marienplatz and its throngs of tourists like a squirrel trying to cross Times Square, I sometimes catch a whiff of the edibles...and then I'm hungry. Like the wolf. A squirrel wolf, if you like. But who wants to pay €4 for a coffee and €7 for a sandwich? Get your Hände hoch if you said, "ICH NICHT!" because nor do I. Squirrel wolves often forget to go to the ATM, so we much prefer, say, €3 for a sandwich, and for that reason do I so love coming to this little place. Also, because their Bavarian accents are charming. And if you order one of their nifty salads to eat there, they will put it into a huge bowl with real utensils for you to eat at one of their standing tables. And because after 6PM, most everything is half off (excepting salads, beers, juices, and candy bars). So if your "Mouth is alive with juices like wine," I recommend you bring your hunger to the Wolf.

They were booked with reservations for the evening, but fit us in since it was early. Super tiny and black painted walls, but flowers and candles on every table. Great playlist going as well. My gin and tonic was perfectly strong, and the servers were friendly and personable. They only had a German menu with 8 food options, so we used my downloaded German google translate as best we could but had no clue if it would be pasta, salads, or a plated meal. Everything turned out to be loaded salads and it was literally the best food I've had in a long time. I got the duck. Go here!

Still one of my favorite bars in Munich. I was afraid it wouldn't live up to my fond memories, but…read moreit is still as quirky and wonderful as I remembered. For some reason, I thought it was very difficult to find, but it was so easy to take the 19 tram through the heart of town to Maxmonument. Then it is just a couple blocks down Thierschstrasse and right on Mariannenstrasse. Look for the blue sign. No reservations. Cash only. Communal seating. Expect to share a table. It is a funky place primarily filled with 20 and 30-somethings crowded around the bar and small tables. Many are pushed together for larger groups, having lively conversations in the dark space lit by white candles. I think the room is painted gold, but it is hard to tell. The artwork painted on the walls throughout the space is... interesting. A severed finger writing "help" and an ear that is a mouth. It could keep you scratching your head for days. They don't have an English menu, although in another funny twist, many food and beverage items have English names and German descriptions. My remedial German was aided by the waitress, who was the best I've had in Munich this trip. My "Inferno" salad (grilled turkey, roasted potatoes, zucchini, carrots, bell peppers, peanuts and olives) was excellen,t and despite the name, only mild + on my personal spice scale. I also enjoyed a non-traditional "Old Fashioned." For visitors looking for an alternative to the hundreds of sausage and beer focused restaurants in town, this is a great place to try. For me, it is all about the salads and cocktails here. Do yourself a favor and skip the tram on your way back to town. Stroll along Maximillianstrasse (Munich's version of Rodeo Drive) and be blown away by the oppulence and extravagance of the retail elite. Even the streetlights are dripping in crystals.

But as soon as our waiter got to us, everything came quickly after that. I loved my pork knuckle house special with sausages, red cabbage, sauerkraut, and a potato dumpling. My sister had the goulash with spatzle and it was also delicious. Nephew had the cheese spatzle which he devoured. Beer was really good. I had the Dunkel beer for dessert. Noisy, fun, and expect the empty seats at the other side of your table to be filled with another party. If I wasn't just a huge fan of trying completely new places everywhere I go, I would go back and eat there. Our waiter, from Budapest, was super funny, very quick, and had a smile on his face unlike some of the others.

I read in the local newspaper about this new spot that brings Obama's favorite dish to Munich…read more Always open for new culinary experiences I planned to visit this spot with a colleague tomorrow evening. Now I was so curious that I already made a visit today. The place is definitely well chosen, being so close to the university and in one of the food hotspots of Munich. The guests are an interesting mix of the hip and creative young generation and open minded people in their best age. The typical "firsties" you find at all newly opened restaurants all over Munich and I'm not meaning this in a negative way. The Hawaiian poke was excellent. I can not compare it with the one they serve in Hawaii but I liked the mix of soft and crunchy, sweet and spicy. I had a mixture of rare tuna, salmon and octopus cubes together with shrimps, spring onions, nuts, chilies, avocado, mango, goji berries and roasted sesame seeds in a peanut sauce on a bed of rice. What impressed me especially was, that even 15 minutes before closing the ingredients were extremely fresh. They store it in quite small containers obviously causing the kitchen to prepare the ingredients multiple times per day. As a drink I chose the Peach Ice Tea by "Elephant Bay". Never seen this brand before, but liked the taste with strong peach and not too much sugar. Service was great even at the end of a definitely long workday. Being the first with this Hawaiian classic dish I would not be surprised if they would introduce another Hawaiian classic, "Shave Ice", to Munich. It is a block of water ice that is carved or shaved to snow on special machines and is then flavored with different tasting colored sirups. This would be a great dessert after a poke bowl and a refreshing pick me up during the summer. I am sure, we will see more creative ideas by the founders of this new location and I am already curious how the "Aloha Poke" will develop.

Terrible. I'm going to preface this by saying that I lived in the Pacific Northwest for 20 years…read moreand have been to Hawaii many many times. Nowhere in Germany will you find poke that's comparable even to what you'd buy at a Safeway or Foodland in Hawaii, at least if tuna is your thing. German poke is basically a salad served on a bed of rice, with a couple ounces of crouton sized chunks of fish, tofu, or meat (turkey is an option here; this alone should probably serve as enough of a warning). You can order from a menu, or build your own. I did the latter. I got a few chunks of tuna and a bunch of vegetables, served on a bed of soggy rice, with some sickeningly sweet sauce drizzled on top (honey soy?). Obviously, Germany is far from the world's prime tuna fishing grounds, so you need to lower your expectations, but the stuff I was served was disgusting: Soggy, mushy, flavorless. Yuck! The place had a fairly long line at lunchtime, which I'd attribute to the fact that Germans have no idea what poke is supposed to taste like. And I guess the bowls are very colorful, and hence instagramable. If you want to watch students take pictures of their food, this may be your place, but please don't come here for poke. You'd do marginally better at Fishbowl near Viktualienmarkt, but I think the hard truth is that in Munich, you'll have to do it yourself. Buy some tuna at Poseidon, cut it up, mix with shoyu, sesame oil, some onions, a little spice. And be glad you never set foot in this terrible store.

I was lucky to meet the inspiring founders of Cafe Gratitude in August at a raw food workshop and from what I know, they planned to come back soon, it's a workshop worth attending for all those interested in joining the Cafe Gratitude community. Back in August, Cafe Gratitude Munich was just in plan, now it's a very nice reality and it's one of the places where I could stay all day long, it's part of my favourite cosy homey places in Munich. I recommend it to everyone, whether you are vegetarian or you are not so much into veggies, just try a few raw food dishes and then you will realize that eating raw is much more tastier than expected when it's properly prepared like it is in Cafe Gratitude and it's giving a boost to your energy too! :) I've added already photos of the delicious healthy food that I've got there, more to come from my next visit there! :) And after you will visit Cafe Gratitude, don't forget to let us know here on Yelp "What are you grateful for?" ;))

We walked in at 7pm on a Tuesday night and even without reservations we were seated immediately. Our table had comfy pillows for our backs and we had plenty of room to store our coats and bags. I must also mention the bathrooms in this review, they are in the basement and have a unique jungle decoration with animal sounds like mooing piped in. My husband said the men's bathroom was also uniquely designed and had two urinals facing each other through a red heart. Now, back to the food, we ordered off the daily specials menu and were happy to see that one side was in German and the other side was in English. The regular menu also had English translations, and both of our servers spoke fluent English. We ordered the potato and vegetable stew and the potato dumplings with bacon and mountain cheese and salad. The portions were huge and between two people we could not finish those two items. The quality of food was delicious with amazing seasoning. The salad has a tasty tangy dressing and we highly enjoyed our meal. I would love to try more items on their menu, I highly recommend this restaurant.

A really great dining experience…read more The atmosphere is upscale cafe - the tables have a nice mix of friendly and in the mix and private - although you are close together you don't feel close enough that others are eavesdropping on conversations. Service is friendly and helpful. Also appreciated there were gender neutral bathrooms. The drinks were great - nice to go somewhere with a diverse non alcoholic menu. I had an NA beer and my spouse had a strawberry matcha latte - I was definitely jealous of her drink as it was beautifully presented and well prepared. Food was also very good. We went all out - got a cashew cheese starter, schnitzel, a bowl, and ice cream for dessert. The schnitzel was a standout - my spouse doesn't eat meat but really wanted to try schnitzel - I do and think this one was better seasoned and prepared than the meat ones I had. My bowl was hearty and flavorful - especially liked the peanut sauce. And we loved that we could choose three flavors for the ice cream! Would definitely go back.
