We really enjoyed it. Because the plays here are spoken in Spanish, Gala provides three monitors with the English subtitles. That's a real benefit, though it would be nice if one of the monitors was directly below the stage so you can see both the subtitles and the play at the same time. Seats are kinda snug, but you do expect that in an older theatre. Also, even though the theatre validated our ticket, the validation discount was not reflected in how much we paid upon exit from the adjacent Giant grocery store parking lot.

I was surfing the web for Tai Chi classes and found the Chinatown Community & Cultural Center! Er…read morethe best part about their classes - tis FREE!!! The Center is situated on the 2nd floor in a swanky looking office building just round the corner from Gallery Place Metro station. The first time I went there, I got horribly lost and the irony is that no one could tell me where the Center was located when I asked (I asked for directions from the owner of a souvenir shop on the same street and from the noodle restaurant round the corner) ! I was working under the mistaken assumption that the Chinatown businesses would know this place!!! Ah well. If you are walking from Gallery Place, the Center is located on the 2nd floor of the building between 7th and 6th St in the middle of H street. Look out for the sign to the Metropolitan Police Department's Asian Liaison Unit. The Asian Liaison Unit is on the first floor and the Center is one floor up. As you walk through the side lobby, you'd know you're in the right place cos there are display cases showing off handicrafts made at the Center's various classes. The Center's website says that their mission is to "preserve and promote Chinatown and celebrate Chinese culture, history, language, and heritage" and boy do they offer lots of programs - some of which are free! Class schedules and info are listed on their website. Some of the classes offered are: martial arts classes (tai chi and kung fu), language classes, art and calligraphy classes & chinese instrument classes. The martial arts classes are free while the art class cost ($15 a lesson - pay as you go) and calligraphy at ($8 a lesson). Quite a bargain! I attended the tai chi class and it was quite a workout. I was apprehensive about attending the class cos I wasnt sure if it would be in "Chinese" but the class instructor spoke English! (Before class - I had nightmares of me standing in the middle of class not understanding instructions given in Chinese and going right when everyone went left!!!) Am looking forward to checking out the rest of the programs available.

Representing the 4th quarter of 2017 is Silver Spring Stage. I had a less of a long-term relationship shortly starting shortly before moving to Wheaton to Apr. 2018. A month after moving in Nov. 2017, we went to a play here. I've been to Silver Spring Stage twice. My current girlfriend & I went to a play in June 2024. Silver Spring Stage is a nice intimate venue. There's no bad seat. There are seats to the right of the stage and in front, but the actors are fair to both prospective. Acoustics are good here. It's not some fancy venue, but it does the job as a good local community stage.

I came to see Pippin at this theater and cannot begin to express how impressed I was with the…read moretalent here. From singing to costuming to choreography, each performer gave everything to the audience. Since this is a theater in the round in a very intimate setting, I had my concerns that I would be in a section in which the performers had their backs to me. Quickly I realized that the seasoned cast is skilled at playing to each side and the staging wouldn't inhibit anyone's view. I purchased tickets with a partial view ( Row 4), and felt that my view from there was better than many Broadway shows I've attended. I did not find them to inhibit the show in any way, and the leg room was spacious. I really enjoy watching the support cast (chorus) and in this show particularly their roles were important to every element and integrated into the foreground. This is something you often don't see in traditional shows where the leads are foreground and the chorus is just left to be background noise. Great job by all. The theater is located near some eateries and an ice cream shop, but take advantage of this before the show. I felt every single person headed right to the ice cream shop after the show, and some of the eateries closed just as we exited at 9:00pm on a Sunday.

Signature Theatre has taken a show I have seen multiple times in the past, and freshened it up. A lot! Presented in the round - which I normally do not like - it presents like live-action happening right in front of your eyes for the 1st time. And the theater is small enough that I felt immersed in the action! Indeed, several times, players would come right up into the seats and interact with me and other audience members. It really made the show seem like a story being presented for first time, spontaneously, right in front of me. And, the performances were so fresh, so intense that I felt that each and every emotion/action was directed only to me. Very nicely staged! The quality of talent in this show is also noticeable. Particular kudos to the man who portrayed Pippin. The ensemble too was Broadway caliber. The dancing in particular was exhilarating! I felt every kick and twist. Fosse lives in this production! This show is old, however, having been first conceived in the early 1970's. But there was very little that was tired or old or vintage. It was fresh and cutting edge. The Signature production was unlike any of the other presentations of Pippin I have seen. The actors' entrances came in from the audience entrances - all 4 corners of the theater - and it was enthralling. The close proximity made every actor seem like they were talking/singing just to me. It was the kind of show that you really need to see more than once because there is so much going on all at once. Bravo to the Signature Theatre once again!

The actors were so good in their respective roles and I was completely immersed in the story. It came together at the end really well and the practical effects were incredible. I visited the Shakespeare Theatre Company's Harman Hall this past Sunday for a performance of…read moreParanormal Activity (their seasons include non-Shakespeare works), and I was really impressed by the production and the building itself. (FYI: STC has productions in two separate theaters - Harman Hall and Klein Theatre, so make sure you know which location is the location for your production). Harman Hall is beautiful - modern, bright, large. We sat in the front row of the mezzanine, and the seats were great but I think most of their seats would be great. Unlike the prices are outrageous, I often like to sit in the front row of the mezzanine when I attend the theater, because I'm short and often find my view obstructed by people in front of me in theaters. Because Harman Hall is modern and newer than historic theaters (on Broadway in NYC, for example), the incline of seats in the theater is much more pronounced than in other theaters. I didn't need to sit in that front row, because I probably could have seen from anywhere. Our performance wasn't sold out, and the theater was not packed or crowded - short lines for the bar (especially on the top floor where we were sitting anyway), short lines for the bathroom. The location is convenient, near a couple of Metro stations, lots of restaurants and bars, and a few museums. We parked in a garage I reserved a spot in on SpotHero, which was less than $15 for the day, too. Although I tend to focus my reviews of theaters on the theater itself (you could see a good production at a theater and then a production you don't like as much - but you can still appreciate the theater - its comfort, its location, its amenities), I will say that the production we saw was interesting and thought-provoking. I recently learned that AMA has some free podcasts so I look forward to checking those out in the future. AMA offers their live courses in various locations including their well thought out and comfortable conference center in Crystal City.
