My biggest issue with the cut was that he didn't take time to blend the layers so the final result looked choppy. If I may be real honest, it is rare for me to draft up a review. But every couple of years or so I am compelled. And now, as I shamelessly look at myself in the mirror, I must share how incredibly content I am with my haircut from Tony--a polite fellow that's easy on the eyes, easy to talk to, and, oh, yeah owns the business. Truth be told, come this July, I will have my first year getting my hair do, treatment and style at the SLS Salon. And have not gone anywhere else. It's mainly appointment only which is great because there is never any waiting. Staff are very punctual and all have great positive energy. You are seated on your stylist's chair upon arrival and never feel rushed. I've seen them make sure you have your specific issues addressed, and given very honest professional opinions on what looks best for you. From a simple clean hair cut, to highlights and extensions, I've seen them do it all over the past year and everyone always leaving happily. This boutique gem is located at a very prime location in Echo Park and there's generally plenty of parking around for you to find--meter free. Highly recommend this place, all of them are exceptional but if you want to go to the most attentive and informative, hands down ask to be seen by Tony. read more

Got a haircut with Antonio in May, through a Groupon. I would not recommend his services to anyone! It's taken me a few months to write this because I thought it would have grown out well and would eventually lay better, however, that is not how a haircut of this low caliber works. He did not bother to understand my hair texture and just started cutting in a style I've never seen done before, there was absolutely no blending and one side is actually shorter than the other. In the last 6 months I've gotten two haircut since my cut with Antonio and have been told all I can do is wait for it to grow out since the cut is SO BAD. The last stylist I went to pointed out all the faults in the haircut, including, uneven layers, misplaced layers (near the very top of my head), and lack of blending so I know I'm not imagining it. This place is not worth your money! I'm sure Great Clips would do a better job. read more

I feel so terrible writing this review and not being able to remember the name of the woman who helped me -_- (if anyone from the salon sees this - she's a new stylist who just moved from Atlanta, she had blond hair when I was there but that may have changed by now haha). NOTE: I only got my hair dyed and blown out, didn't get a haircut. Background: I've never had my hair permanently dyed or bleached before - just demi-permanent home dyes for shoots or w/e - but I've been wanting to give myself a pastel/light colored dip dye for months. I was hesitant, however, because my natural color is really hard to get back (red hair) and I've seen many dip dye/ombre colorings go seriously wrong. Plus, I'm not exactly GOOD at doing things, so I figured I should go to a professional. After my friend recommended Pravana hair dyes for the color I wanted, I checked through their site and saw that Silverlake Studio carried the brand. I called the studio and got an appointment that same day - and when I got stuck in traffic then they let me change that appointment to later in the day without any hassle. The woman who worked with me understood what I wanted immediately, but still made sure that I'd really thought about which color I wanted before deciding. And the color is EXACTLY what I wanted - there's no hard line where my natural color and the dye begins, and she did an amazing fade with the bleach so it's multi toned. I love it. She was super nice and friendly throughout the whole process; I figure it was about 2 1/2 hours start to finish, with a blowout and small trim, for under 100$. Full disclosure: the studio itself isn't like a super trying-to-be-high-end, air conditioned&sterile Beverly Hills sort, so if that's what you feel like you might be put off. But it was perfectly clean and very comfortable and relaxed. Everyone I saw come and go got great cuts&colors and had genuinely good times with their stylists. If you're thinking about coloring your hair an "unconventional" color definitely try here, you won't be disappointed. read more

What in the actual fuck. My haircut is soooooooo insanely bad I immediately had to go to another salon to get it fixed. He didn't dry my hair and I left the salon with a wet head of hair so it was impossible to tell if it was good or bad until I got home and saw how unbelievably bad it was. Oh yelp. Why did you send me here? It's going to take a long, long time to trust again after this one. A few months back I got tired of going to Beverly Hills for hair color and was looking for a salon closer than Canale. Or I was feeling self-destructive. And I got just what I deserved for being a cheating wretch: the hair equivalent of a horrible STD -- orange hair. After Antonio turned my hair orange, he left me sitting for an hour with dripping wet orange hair while he put ratty extensions on some other girl. When I complained about the orange, he first argued that it wasn't orange, then argued that it wouldn't look orange after it was dry, then offered to re-dye it. All the while, the assistant gave me a death stare -- because evidently I'm picky and pretentious for not wanting Crayola-colored hair. They were going to charge me $110 for the privilege of walking around looking like a muppet, but to their credit, they reconsidered. read more

Sorry to be contrarian. I will not use any names for specific barbers. This is not to burn anyone in particular but just to write about a bad experience so that it won't happen again to another patron. I went in with a nasty mop as I have been really busy. Asked for a zero or a one fade high, (whatever they recommended). The music was loud. The next thing I know, it was a 1 shaving hair off the top of my head. It was going to be 1 all around, which I didn't really want. Now it didn't look pretty before but I realized that now I was going to be shaved headed. Not so bad considering that I had been shaved headed before. The whole time the person was using their hand (not a brush) to brush off excess hair. Hair was all over the place. They didn't use a neck paper so I had someone else's bacteria all over my neck. Then the barber undid the neck so that there was hair all over my neck and running into my shirt. 80% of the haircut was done this way. Then I was taken for a shampoo and there was water all over the back of my shirt. The original price I was quoted on the phone for a real haircut was 17 dollars. They ended up charging me 24 dollars to get a shaved head. I could have gone to a blind monkey to get my hair shaved and it would have cost me less than 10 dollars. Instead, I got a shaved head (which could have been a horror for some), poor hygiene, hair all over the place, a shampoo job that went everywhere and then charged 24 dollars on top of it all. read more

When I lived in SF my hair was an art project I designed myself, and it was fun for me. It was messy and platinum, and it worked for awhile. Now that I live in LA, I started getting my hair professionally maintained, and it's been full of ups and downs (mostly ups!). I was frequenting a different salon, but my stylist moved and was only available once a week, so after much back and forth in my head, I decided to give Silver Lake Studios a shot. Paige cut my hair and I am absolutely loving it. I've been trying to grow out a pixie cut for years, but I the truth is that I like having short hair. Paige has short hair too, so I knew she'd know what to do! We talked about how I wanted to grow my hair into a graduated bob, and she went to work. She meticulously cut my layers in the back and they lay on my head so well! I had mentioned I wanted side swept bangs, but since I had already took the scissors to my bangs a few weeks ago, we had to go shorter than I initially wanted. I LOVE THEM. I'm thinking I might actually keep them for the long haul. I'm not super into selfies, but I have been taking so many of me with my new hair cut. We talked about how I should come in every 4 -6 weeks to maintain my hair, in order for it to grow out. I had been previously waiting 8 -10 weeks, as I didn't want to lose any length, but would then have to cut more hair than I liked, as it would completely lose any style. I am very excited to go back and have Paige work her magic on my hair again in a few weeks! Bring your own beverages. I had worked the night shift and then had an appointment at 11am, which is not first thing in the morning I know, but it is for me! I wished I had stopped for coffee before. After my visit last week I have to update my review...I never want to visit this salon again if the a**hole with the dogs who is part-owner is there. I still love my stylist Farel - he's amazing. This review in no way reflects upon his awesome talent!!! Farel was 3/4s done applying my color when Dog Boy turns off the overhead lighting!!!! So I said to him - "Um, excuse me but how am I going to see my color if you turn off the lights?" He snaps back: "You don't need to see it now - it isn't even done! Lights are expensive. I'm trying to keep the cost down." Me: "Are you kidding me? You want me to sit in the dark" So he goes back and turns on 3 - which he promptly shuts off when my eyes are closed and I'm getting my hair washed (like I'm not gonna notice when I open my eyes!!!!! I asked Farel to please turn the lights back on because this was ridiculous. I'm a paying customer who comes every month and this Dog Boy makes the atmosphere so unwelcoming - I never want to go back there. From now on - Farel can come to my house to do my hair and get the full amount I pay him instead of having to split it 50/50 with Dog Boy. Dog Boy - you think you have saved 20 cents in electricity but you have just lost yourself $40 buck from my pocket. To the other salon partner: Your partner is wrecking your business. Excellent place. Brought my daughter for a hair appointment for prom. She had pictures and the beautiful young woman--sorry I didn't get her name--was amazing and did a wonderful job. On a whim I asked if I could get my hair done as well. Nancy took me and understood exactly what I was hoping for. Turned out great! I've gotten lots of compliments plus--and this is the biggest thing--I can actually replicate the style!!! Finally I have to add that the atmosphere was welcoming and music selections enjoyable. Are we talking about the same Silver Lake Studio? This place draws you in with the sleek floor-to-ceiling windows that could pass for a Beverly Hills salon. The wonders stop there. On the Sunday I was there (because Hive around the corner was closed (see my 5-star review)), the only other patron was an oldish mom flanked by at least 3 crazy screaming children. My hairdresser was completely apathetic and after not completely finishing my cut, he told me it looked better with a little extra length. Um, OK that's not why I came to get a haircut... I'll never see you again. The prices are cheap but I'd rather pay more for a decent cut and pleasant experience. Good for recent graduates of Supercuts. read more

Got a Groupon "Now! Deal": $56 for $80 done by a Junior Stylist. She sure was a "Junior" stylist. My only request: a trim to get rid of my split ends and your fashion expertise to recommend anything to make it look better/different without cutting it too short. She was pretty friendly and held up a conversation. When it comes down to the purpose of my trip, though, light convo did not suffice. Did not make ends meet. Literally speaking. What I got was a sloppy n shaggy trim. The blowdry took twice as long as usual. She never cut it with my part in mind (and didn't even end up finding it.) No style besides the blowdry. Didn't apply any product to my hair, nor tried to sell me anything, which is both good and bad. No recommendations either, except for some product she finds at beauty supply stores. IF you don't have anything to sell to me, what are you using on my hair? How can you help me? I walked out with little hope... My split ends REMAINED and looked THE SAME the next day. The cut itself looked a lot better when I rewashed it and styled it myself. Not fairly noticeable, but alright. Could have saved the $$. Could have gotten a hair cut. I went in today because I needed a trim and I came out in love! The second time I was there and decided to dye my hair I wasn't too pleased with the result I decided to give the salon a second chance and go back today. Tony the owner did my hair and I absolutely love the result. He cut about two inches off which is exactly what I wanted and left my hair in beautiful layers and a beautiful blow dry which is exactly what I was looking for. The salon is super clean and welcoming and the staff is super helpful and friendly! I loved talking to Nancy she's super funny and was giving me tips with my hair what I can do to it. I haven't gotten my hair done by Nancy but I've seen her work and I would trust her with my hair. Her or tony the owner. I purchased a daily deal for a haircut and deep conditioning treatment for $39, so it was definitely affordable in my case. I think it normally would have cost over $100. Most of the time I trim my own hair but since I'm growing it long I wanted to make sure that it was healthy. They don't seem to chat much - got right to business. I was sort of unsure of what to do since I hadn't been in a salon for a long time. At first I felt like the service wasn't that friendly, as if they were trying to hurry up - even though there wasn't a single client in the salon the entire time I was there! My stylist had two little doggies in the salon which were cute but I could see how some people might not that - there was dog hair on the ground and they were jumping up on me. I don't particularly mind since I'm an animal lover - but I feel like that is something people should be aware of before going here. (especially if you're allergic!) When he began cutting my hair he was a little more friendly and was chatting a little bit. I told him that I only wanted the minimum amount trimmed and just to make sure there were no dead ends, etc. He knew exactly what I wanted and gave me a great result. He even spent a while styling my hair and it was gorgeous! I was very impressed with the end result and I felt great! The only bad thing about my visit was that I got a $58 parking ticket for an expired meter (my appointment took longer than expected) so make sure you put enough money in your meter! This of course was not the salon's fault, but I was bummed that I ended up paying the full amount for my hair and I'd rather have paid it to the salon than the city!! I came in for a haircut- just to even out my outgrown layers. I asked for a simple blunt-bob. By the time we were done, my hair is uneven and the cut looks unfinished. The layers are all over the place. I had to eventually just settle before there was no more hair to cut. Very disappointed in the cut. (At one point the stylist asked her neighboring stylist to help her out) I'm not sure if she was a trainee but she didn't seem very experienced and confident. I've had THE WORST experiences with hair salons. I refused to cut my hair for two years after my last fiasco, so after my split ends were screaming for a haircut, I came in scared that I would be making the same mistake again. I had bought an LA Deal maybe around May, so when the time was coming near for the coupon to expire, I came in August right after my trip to Nicaragua. I made an appointment with Nancy, whom I had already met a few months prior to my appointment when I came in asking for their rates. She was really kind, so I hoped her skills were just as good as her attitude. I came in, scared to death I would end up looking Miss Swan, because every time I go to a salon and ask to get my ends trimmed, the stylist somehow sees that as a green light to go crazy with the scissors. Nancy noticed that my hair was seriously damaged, so she offered to give me the deep conditioning and deep cleaning treatment, and I must say, I felt the difference with my hair. She even did minimal layers, and I hate doing layers, but it actually gave my hair some volume. From everything she did and suggested, she made my hair look great. It finally felt healthy after two years, and I was in no way disappointed with the results. The service is great here, they serve you water and sodas, and if you like little yorkies, they'll be running around you feet too. The place is really well-kept and organized. The one thing that I had to complain about is that the other guys that work there seem really conceited, and don't really welcome you in. I felt that they just see you as another customer, and like they don't have to help you. Nancy on the other hand is completely generous, sweet, hospitable, and holds up a good conversation. I have been going to Tony for 8 years. He never disappoints. I moved 35 miles away and tried a local salon, then tried another salon to fix what the local salon did and then came running back to Tony! He fixed it...thank goodness! I have complicated, thick hair and he is seriously the only person who knows how to work with it. I don't know what I would do without him. His prices are reasonable and you can tell him anything shhhh! It is a "no nonsense" salon, he doesn't try and up-sell or push products on you. Love how affordable this place was ($45 for a wash and a cut) and the fact that you could basically just walk in is fantastic. I wanted a semi dramatic cut since I was tired of my long hair and summer is coming so I just walked in and Paige was there to help me. Paige did a great job and i'm so happy with my new, edgy hair cut! Now I won't be cursing myself out when it's hot as heck this summer. In the five years I've been visiting Silver Lake Studio, she has gotten to know my noggin very well, familiar with what style I like whilst not afraid to recommend new head trends that she believes would suit my look and my personality. On a side about personality, she is super sweet to get along with and keen to listen. The topic of hairstyles invariably comes up, Nancy and her colleagues are passionate about their trade; none of them are afraid to step in to offer tips or answer a question. I like that clients seem as dedicated to their stylists as their stylists are to them, yet there's a big team dynamic where the stylists collaborate together to see what can really work. This is the type of place that ensures happy clients return. Besides the people, the space is bright and clean with rotating local art works on display and good music always on the Tannoy. Until the sound system broke, they need to fix that...that's my only criticism. Parking typically means a short stroll down Sunset but hey, you're in Silverlake, what do you want?
