About two years ago I became interested in Grace Jiu-jitsu/Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I went to a school in NNJ (5 min from my house) I tried it out for a night...seemed good so I signed up! Boy was I wrong...I was taking "white belt only" classes (there were all color belts there for whatever reason) Within the 2nd day I was rolling live with white belts that have been doing BJJ for 6 months or longer...sometimes I was rolling with blue, purple and brown belts going live! Needless to say I was getting beat up left and right because at this point I didn't know what I was doing, I felt like a rag doll for others to play with. I wasn't able to use the moves I was learning in the first half of the class because these guys were just going all out on me and I didn't have enough knowledge to defend myself or enough technical knowledge to perform the move the correct way. Definitely not the way I wanted to learn BJJ. I wrestled for 17 years, District champ, State champ, Regions/Super Regions medalist. I'm no slouch when it comes to full contact sports at all. Without the knowledge on how to perform the moves your not going any where in GJJ/BJJ. I'm all about learning, practicing and putting in hard work to be successful but you defiantly need some basic knowledge on BJJ moves before rolling live. Eventually I got hurt rolling live...but I still wasn't gonna give up so I came back to train. I notice the instructor didn't show the white belts attention/direction that was needed for one to learn GJJ/BJJ. He was showing attention to the blue, purple and brown belts. White belts were left to survive and learn by default of rolling live. The passion I had to learn Grace Jiu-jitsu/Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was gone and I decided GJJ/BJJ wasn't for me and never came back to train. A year later I was watching a youtube video about - How To Find the Perfect Jiu-Jitsu School (For You) by Ryron and Rener Gracie. The video is 50 min long and I watched the video with out interrupt! I just recently had my 2 years at Silver Fox BJJ, and can tell you I wouldn't change it for anything. When I walked into the school and watched Master Karel (aka The Silver Fox) teach class that first time I knew this was my new home. I had checked out a few other schools before being told about SFBJJ and they were full of macho tough guys who made someone that had never been there before feel uncomfortable. Being a wrestler before I knew what I was looking for in a coach and teacher, and hadn't found that anywhere else. The atmosphere at SFBJJ was relaxed, everyone was friendly and willing to help. However, what impressed me the most was the instruction. When the head instructor continues to learn and evolve with the art, so will the students. The new facility with top quality mats, separate men and womens rooms, with the amenities that are important to have in a training facility is fantastic. Plenty of space to train on the mat is a huge plus. The school now has it's own identity which makes it easy to find when your looking for it, with plenty of parking. I've used to train with Karl Pravec when I was home from college during the summer and I was looking to take the place of my college BJJ club back in 2008. From my first session I was able to appreciate Karl's ability to demonstrate techniques and break them down into bite-sized pieces that I could wrap my head around. I just recently started training again with Karl and I was amazed his new facility in Saddle Brook. Brand new zebra mats, changing area with showers, and enough space for everyone to train without running into each other just compliments the training. The new facility comes with new sessions and the best part is you can find a session 7 days a week. Class starts with a warm-up that's designed to get your heart rate elevated, blood pumping, and muscles loose. Next Karl shows a series of 2 to 3 moves (offensive or defensive). You continue to drill the moves while Karl observes and critics your technique. Class ends with 3 - 5 minute round of live sparring/rolling. By the end of class you've definitely got a great workout, learned a takedown, throw, choke, or armlock, and have had a chance to implement it into your game with sparring. Silver Fox BJJ has some of the best instruction around and I say this since I've trained with the Club Team at Rutgers University, Advanced Martial Arts in New Brunswick, West Chester BJJ in NY, and Metro Detroit BJJ in Michigan. I have been with Silver Fox BJJ for a year and I have found the instruction to be top quality. I have studied Japanese Karate and Jiu-Jitsu for 12 years earning a Black Belt prior to training BJJ. Since my prior training had focused mainly on standing self-defense techniques with the ground being a place I put my attacker not myself, I was reluctant to start BJJ. I soon realized how viable BJJ was an addition to any standing techniques. It is also an extremely fun sport that is a great work out! I found the atmosphere to be great and not long after found myself addicted to the work outs. Classes are fun and taught by high level competitors and unlike some schools its not full of macho guys who think they are next UFC champ but can't punch straight or finish a triangle choke. Since Karel Pravec is an established Renzo Gracie Black Belt student with ties to many UFC champs he is real good about weeding out posers or gym floaters who come and go never learning a thing. One of the great features about the instruction is the fact that all instructors are always working on their own technique. Karel trains with Renzo Gracie and John Danaher on a weekly basis while the other instructors also train some time with Renzo Gracie or other high level guys. You never feel like classes are a repeating cycle of the same techniques. Instead each instructor has different skills they bring out in their own BJJ game and in their instruction. From Judo style take downs to Wrestling take downs each instructors game varies allowing you to have a bigger pool of techniques to learn. In a class full of guys ages 19-50 at all weight and skill levels its easy to feel comfortable. I have visit other bjj schools and this is by far the best one. Head instructor Karel Pravec is a world class Jiu Jitsu practitioner/teacher and a great person, every time he teaches you can tell he is really passionate about what he is doing and he makes sure his jiu jitsu (and what he teaches) is up to date by training in the team headquarters in NYC. If Karel is not teaching the other instructors that train 5-7 days a week with him, teach with the same approach of him. Not matter what your goals are you will be able to reach them in this school, if you just want to learn how to defend yourself, get fit and improve your lifestyle the school has a very friendly environment where not just the staff, the other students as well, will be willing to help you and if your goals include being a competitor or a fighter there is a strong bjj and mma competition team that will push you pass your limits and help you improve and win. Back when he was with Renzo, Karel had a reputation as a bully. he used to love to beat up on the newcomers especially. Even the bullies called him a bully. When i trained at Renzo's, my second day there he got off "teaching" me by driving his shoulder into my throat. i tapped, and he said "that is not a submission, and he kept on doing it. After that, while he was "teaching me about the guard" he hooked my legs, lifted me, and then tilted so that he dumped me on my head. On his own, with no Renzo to keep him in check, he is really going to injure people, and continue to live up to his reputation as a bully who injures people for his own kicks. read more
