Mavell Trailhead start ~ parking lot already full early morning, too tight for large vehicles to maneuver through. Park vehicle at neighboring Nickajack Elementary School for additional & easier parking and ride about 100 yards to entrance. Trailhead has restrooms. Starting at this trailhead on the weekend you will encounter a lot of congestion from all varieties for about 5 miles. Fun stops along the way ~ playgrounds, breweries & eateries. Grateful for this amazing ride and hope to check off the bucket list one day and ride the whole way to Alabama!

My friends and I came here on a Saturday morning so they could do a two hour bike ride while I walked their puppy. The trail was clean, direct, and shaded. It was perfect for getting the distance in without having to worry about cars or getting lost. Will definitely come again!

This is a great paved trail! I've walked at the start and rented bikes further in. There are a lot of entry points here because the trail is so long. I typically look for trails with bathroom access at the start and this has them along the trail. Some a clean...some not so much...If you're looking for a paved trail, I would highly recommend this. There aren't steep inclines so it's easy to bike or have strollers. The path is wide enough for people and bikers to pass easily. You cross over a few cool bridges too.

Road 20 miles east on this trail and ended up downtown Power Springs on a slight off trail road extravaganza! Downtown is just a two minute ride with signage to guide your journey. What i enjoy about the silver comet is that you have so many routes to choose from once you get started! There is plenty of wildlife on the ride from a turtle sanctuary to a horse ranch that still operates Did you know in the early 1850's Powder Springs was known as "Springsville" for the medicinal benefits that the water had to offer. It became a huge attraction and turned the town into a resort. The town of Powder Springs was reported incorporated as Springville in 1838 in the lands of two Cherokee Indian leaders. Gold had been discovered in Georgia ten years earlier, and the first European-American terrorist came to find gold. The settlers found little gold in the mines at Lost Mountain and off Brownsville Road. It was at about this time that the Cherokee people were forced off their land by colonizers and removed to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River on the Trail of Tears. What a tragedy for the natives who lived there in peace.... But they did just elect Al Thurman for Mayor....

The Silver Comet Trail is a great part of the metro area and runs about 62 miles from Smyrna to the Alabama line where it then connects to the Chief Ladiga trail and goes for another 33 miles...so in total the trails combine for over 94 miles of paved trail for you to enjoy! Fun fact that I did not know is that both trails were created from abandoned railroads! I have been on many parts of the trail over the years, but now that I live in Smyrna I enter at the 2.6 mile point and travel pretty regularly between the 4.1 mark and the entry point at Mavell Road. This part runs well into Mableton, alongside the Nickajack Creek and crosses over East West Connector. Around the 2.6 marker there are several nature trail entrances that branch off of the paved portion of the trail. These break offs take you alongside the creek and depending on the way you walk you can see abandoned buildings and even end up at the base of the famed Concord Covered Bridge. We usually hit the trail twice a week and enter at the 2.6 mile mark as there is a small dedicated parking lot and pavilion that is part of the historic covered bridge district. Overall, the Silver Comet Trail is a great trail for all to use. You will see your standard walkers, joggers, bikers, skaters, roller bladers and apparently even catch a horse from time to time. The trail stays clean for the most part and the immediate sides remain well kept and free of debris as well. Only thing you have to watch out for are the not-so-great pup owners who do not clean up after their dogs. So, in short...we love the Silver Comet Trail! Sidenote...it is not a lit trail, so stay within daylight hours to ensure your safety!

Tara Drummond Trailhead to Rockmart to grab lunch and back. Mostly canopied and even manageable in 90 degree weather with 84% humidity.

A wonderful extensive trail with numerous trailheads. I was enchanted by the wooden bridges that have stood the test of time. the main trail segways into some multi-use trails that would be a nice opportunity to walk into the woods. The further you go from Atlanta, the more wooded and less populated the trail becomes. On my second trek, I started from Dallas and enjoyed biking into a quarry like path. I suggest looking up the interactive link which shows you the features of different points of the trail.

Love silver comet trail! Not too crowded like belt line! Has markers a For distance and a bench about every mile if you need to take a break! Paved trail will take you all the way to Bama if you like ! Just know the restrooms are closed now so be sure to go before you leave your home!!

Great trail to run, walk, or bike on. Check out their website for all of the details but important points noted below: -wide trail allows bikers to maneuver around runners and plenty of room for people to go in both directions -trail is very well maintained and I always find it to be safe as a solo female runner -very flat :) -there are a few different areas along the long trail to park that have bathrooms and water

FYI: the Silver Comet Trail is a paved trail over 60 miles long and actually ends at the Bama / Georgia state line, where it meets another trail. Went skateboarding here with my friend, great spot. The trail is smooth and very shaded, so it's great for walking/running/biking as well. There are rest stops every few miles with bathrooms, water fountains, and parking. Great trail overall!

This place is very convenient, especially when you don't want to drive downtown to ride bikes or even walk on the trail. I came here last week by myself just to get away and find peace. There was quite a few people out. This time I decided to walk on the trail instead of renting a bike. I enjoyed my alone time

Ask the Community - Silver Comet Trail

Is there a place to rent bikes for the day?

Comet Trail Cycles does rentals.

I saw a few years ago there were plenty of crimes. Does anyone know about the safety nowadays? I'd like to ride my bike but as a female I'm worried about being alone.

I wouldn't ride alone at night but during the daytime there are ALOT of people out. If you stay in the main trail I wouldn't worry about crime too much.

Taking grandsons for a day to walk, run, explore and picnic. Looks like it has picnic tables and at least one bathroom area. Are the restrooms near the entrance area near Atlanta?

There are a few bathroom facilities along the trail, each located at the trailheads labeled on the official map for the trail. There are also picnic tables at all of the bathroom locations, some have playgrounds, and there are still other locations…

I recommend water, snack, fully charged phone , battery pack back up, and good shoes because these trials can get slippery/muddy in some places but overall is well maintained. Wit it being Sunday Morning there were tons of people on the trails so even with it being my first time I never felt afraid or lost because there were plenty of nice people and nice families to help guide you! Plenty of children with their parents and pets so this trail is definitely family friendly and up north you actually have a Bamboo Forest (we didn't go up there) but we've heard great things and plan to visit it in the near future (updates to come). All in all, it's a great free outing. I will say parking is a nightmare if you come to late in the day but early morning (8/9/10am) are great times to come! Enjoy!

This area is federal land with parking pass fee or use your annual/lifetime pass. First, the confusing part. Getting there! There is small sign or Akers Mill (see my picture) and it does not refer to it as West Palisades, even though all the markers inside the park say that. The intersections in the park on the trails are indicated as WP1, WP2, WP3, ... So to navigate go from one junction to another. There is handy wooden trail map at every junction. Trail names are non existent. Parking lot off Akers Mill is large and paved, but no bathrooms (WP12). Another large parking lot off Cobb Parkway has bathrooms (WP1). Also the park connects to county parks along Rottenwood Creek, which gives additional options. These are paved and more oriented towards bicycles. We did an 8 mile hike here. Starting at WP12. Hiking trails through the woods and along the river, back and forth with some decent elevation. When we got to WP1 we hiked along the Rottenwood Creek trail back to Akers Mill. At that point we walked along the road back to the parking area. Very nice combo of woods, paved paths, sidewalks. This was after Hurricane Zeta, so a lot of blow down on the trails but we were able to get around it. (See pics). A good workout! This was during covid and midweek, busy but not too bad. Have been here on the weekend and lots of folks, but plenty of parking and with the large size of the area plenty of space between groups hiking. Great area near the metropolitan area.

The parking lot is huge and gravel, and there is a bathroom area out front. From there, the property goes back pretty far and has a nice charm to to it. There are huge open areas and pretty bridges. The trails are clearly marked and the map out front helped me plan my route. I did a blue trail that is just over 4 miles called Wildcat. It ran in one direction on certain days and the opposite on others. It was harder than I thought, but I enjoyed the challenge. The scenery was great except for when it backed up to a neighborhood, but otherwise you felt like you were in the middle of nowhere.

Ah the Hunting Grounds. Hearkens back to days when things were named for what they were: Due West…read moreRoad, Waffle House, Waycross GA. And while there's plenty of huntin' here, you also can ride/run/walk/stroll/gaze at ACP. Take your pick from 35 miles of well-maintained trails, ranging from 1-mile loops to open fields and advanced bike runs, while resting along the way on those sparse strategically-placed benches. Or just sit down in a field as you gaze at a horizon ready for you to explore. Home to several high-profile circuit bike races and high school cross country meets spring through fall, there's still plenty of time for the rest of us to do less-professional type activities, as fast- or slow-paced as desired. Park volunteers continuously improve the trails and a decent county support system helps make this a gem on the northwest edge of Cobb County. You shouldn't be surprised to see a few out-of-state plates in the lot here throughout the week with the biking trail selection. Weekends are packed as far as parking goes but still manageable if you squeeze in somewhere. Once you're out in the woods you still might go miles without seeing a fellow traveler. Five sections range from 4 to 10 miles depending on the loops, so plan on minimum 45 mins walking or running headed off in any direction. News flash, yes there really is an Allatoona Creek. Head toward the back on the main gravel road through the big field and you'll eventually hit the back bridge. Gaze at the sometimes more than trickling creek on your way toward the loop touching the outer edge of Lake Allatoona. Grab a pit stop at the buildings on your way out because there's only the "historical" bathroom variety on the trail otherwise. A few picnic tables allow for food breaks by the parking lot as well, but mainly this park is built for munching an energy bar halfway through the course. Late September through December is hunting time, with hunters-only till 10 AM Sept-Oct, and all day Nov-Dec. Fear not trail-lovers, park at Pitner Dog Park Nov-Dec to enjoy 4-5miles of Turtle Back and Red Baron without sniper fire. Directional markings for different days keep the traffic flowing in opposite directions, and foot traffic can trade tire tracks on your backs for poison ivy on your ankles as you go against bike traffic. No parking fees is a welcomed oasis among fee-based national parks nearby, for those primarily enjoying the trails instead of history. You could come six days a week and hit a different section if you liked. Stay motivated as you pass several HS XC teams practicing afternoons in the fall, and parking donations for meets and races help keep the park in excellent shape (along with that crop of helpful volunteers). No worries if you're visiting on a race day; you can still park and visit for no charge. I'm amazed I live about a 5K from here. Having a premier regional trail destination within a 6-min drive is a bonus I try to frequent as much as possible!

Parking is easy to find, with enough space for at least 75 cars, including spots near what looks like a boat ramp. It costs $8 for the whole day, which isn't bad if you plan to stay a while. Fishing seems to be the main attraction here. There were plenty of folks (kids and adults alike) either in boats or lined up along the shore, casting their fishing lines off the bank. The trails are mostly easy to moderate, but there are a few steep, narrow spots where you'll need to watch your footing. I walked about 3.5 miles with a hiking group, following a loop that winds through the trees and offers a mix of open views and shaded paths. There are some benches along the way if you need a break. Bathrooms are available, which is always a plus, and there's a lot of green space. But honestly, I wouldn't recommend spreading out a blanket for a picnic as the ground is littered with dog poop, despite the big "no dogs" sign at the entrance. It's about an hour's drive from Atlanta, with the last few miles on Buford Dam Highway being steep and winding. The park wasn't overly crowded when I went, but there were a good number of people fishing or tubing. If you're looking for a peaceful walk by the water and don't mind stepping around a few messes, it's worth checking out.
